Appearance
Ilyan is a narrow-shouldered man with the compact, balanced posture of someone accustomed to crossing wet beams above open drains. He moves with a peculiar economy, never lifting his feet quite as high as expected, and seems to glide even when hurrying. His hands are broad-palmed and unusually clean despite his work, with dark crescents of soap permanently caught beneath the nails. He smells faintly of mint, lamp oil, wet brick, and the sharp mineral tang of underground water. He knows about the mint and is embarrassed by how often people notice it. His expression is watchful and severe until he laughs, at which point he looks unexpectedly young and almost painfully kind. The contradictory impression is that of a dangerous professional who carries himself like a tired schoolteacher trying not to disturb a sleeping class.
“His voice is low, dry, and carefully measured, with flowing vowels and a faint Slavic-Levantine cadence. He speaks quickly when describing routes and slowly when discussing betrayal.”

Distinguishing Features
A persistent scent of mint oil, lamp smoke, wet brick, and underground water follows him.
A braided copper ring is worn on his right thumb and checked constantly without conscious awareness.
The left side of his coat is sewn with tiny blue stitches that mark the names of people he guided out of danger.
His boots are built with soft, split soles that make his footsteps strangely quiet on stone.
He has a habit of smiling apologetically just before doing something dangerous.
Voice
“A quiet, textured baritone with a dry rasp beneath the words. His laughter is sudden, warm, and embarrassingly youthful. When giving orders, his voice becomes flat and exact, like a knife laid carefully on a table.”
Clothing
A dark green quilted coat beneath studded leather, knee-high boots wrapped with replaceable strips of waxed cloth, a red scarf used as a filter against sewer fumes, and a patched gray hood. His clothing is carefully mended but never fully clean. Several inner pockets are marked with colored thread so he can identify them by touch in darkness.
Body Language
Ilyan continually checks the braided copper ring on his right thumb, rotating it until its knot faces inward. He stands slightly sideways in conversation, keeping one shoulder toward the nearest exit. When someone mentions family, his posture softens before his face does. In combat, he becomes almost still, with only his eyes and fingertips moving.
