Iori Kest
Species
Fox Beast-person
Appearance
Iori Kest is a tall fox beast-person with russet fur darkening to soot-black along her forearms, calves, and the backs of her ears. Her fur is meticulously brushed, but never softened with perfume, so she carries the dry scent of cedar boxes, lamp oil, and winter air. Her nine tails are bound in three disciplined groups with black cord, yet the lowest tail constantly twitches as if listening to a distant conversation. She moves with unnerving stillness between sudden, economical bursts, favoring no side and wasting no gesture. Her smile is small, polite, and almost maternal, which becomes startling when paired with the hard, appraising gaze she gives anyone who mentions honor. The contradictory impression is immediate: she looks ceremonial enough to belong in a shrine painting, but her paws are permanently stained with ink and bowstring wax.
“Her voice is low, measured, and intimate even when addressing a battlefield. She pronounces names with exact care, occasionally using a clipped ancestral cadence that makes ordinary sentences sound like formal blessings.”

Distinguishing Features
Nine tails bound into three formal groups, with the lowest tail constantly tapping or twitching.
A narrow copper ring threaded through the fur at the base of her right ear, bearing the names of twelve dead relatives.
Perfectly trimmed claws stained with black calligraphy ink.
A habit of tilting her head toward running water as if someone nearby has spoken.
Her ceremonial smile remains unchanged during threats, apologies, and battlefield orders.
Voice
“A contralto voice with a dry, almost papery texture, soft enough to draw listeners closer and controlled enough to make even a threat sound like a private courtesy.”
Clothing
She wears layered charcoal, copper, and ivory robes beneath lacquered lamellar armor. Her shoulder guards are shaped like fox ears, though the design is subtle enough to seem ornamental. A broad white sash holds prayer tablets, command seals, and a folding war map. Her boots are soft-soled for silent movement, an inappropriate luxury for a shogun that she refuses to surrender.
Body Language
Iori stands with her hands folded inside her sleeves, her tails arranged like a formal fan. When genuinely angry, she becomes more motionless rather than more animated. When lying, the tip of her lowest tail taps twice against the floor.
