Doulè Qamrun
Witch
Doulè Qamrun
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Granny Doulè is a very gaunt, narrow-shouldered dwarf whose body seems to have been folded inward by years of damp, hunger, and solitude. Her skin has the dry gray-brown texture of old river clay, yet her palms are unnervingly soft and warm. She moves with a dragging, birdlike stoop until she reaches water, where she becomes quick and balanced, stepping across floating leaves as if they were floorboards. Her beard is sparse and silver, braided into three thin cords that she knots together whenever she lies. The unexpected contradiction is her smile: when danger appears, her expression becomes almost maternal, while ordinary kindness makes her bare her teeth like an animal deciding whether something is edible. Her hut stands on the enormous exposed skull and rib cage of a prehistoric alligator, its bones supporting the floor like pale beams.
“Her voice is low, papery, and unexpectedly gentle, with rounded vowels and a soft Levantine-Turkic cadence. She speaks slowly when telling the truth and rapidly when inventing a lie.”

Distinguishing Features
Her three beard cords are knotted together whenever she lies and loosened whenever she tells the truth.
Her left boot is made from dark alligator hide and makes no sound, while her right boot squeaks loudly on every dry surface.
The spectral hands serving her pass objects without visible arms, their fingernails packed with black river silt.
She smells faintly of boiled mint, wet stone, and old iron.
Her shadow sometimes shows a long alligator snout when she stands near water.
Voice
“A dry, intimate alto that can become almost soothing, with a soft rounded cadence and occasional words shaped by old dwarven, Levantine, and river-trader accents.”
Clothing
A patched charcoal wool dress hangs from her like a curtain on a fence. Over it she wears a green-brown shawl stiff with salt and marsh pollen. Her boots are mismatched, one made for a dwarf and one made from a scaled alligator hide. The only carefully maintained item is a small copper thimble worn on a cord around her neck.
Body Language
She keeps one hand wrapped around her reed crook and the other constantly checks the three knots in her beard. When listening, she tilts her head toward the floor rather than the speaker, as though the hut itself is whispering beneath the boards.
