Jori
Jori
At the table
Voice
His voice comes from inside the hollow gourd, with a dry, papery rasp and a little wooden-box resonance. Before speaking, he makes a small intake through the carved grin that sounds like air slipping past a loose shutter. His name, Jori, comes out plain and work-worn, with a soft rasp at the end.
He speaks in clipped, playful phrases, often leaving a pause where a startled listener expects a laugh. When giving a warning, his words become practical and precise, like a farmhand calling out a hazard.

How to play them
Let Jori startle the party once, then show that he is watching their reactions rather than trying to hurt them. Earn his trust by taking a child's safety seriously or helping investigate the marsh. He responds poorly to threats against his seed-vine but can be reasoned with if offered a practical alternative.
Goal
Persuade the farm steward to preserve the marsh patch while proving that his scares can serve as warnings rather than cruelty.
Motivation
To make the farm feel safe without giving up the mischief that makes him feel alive.
Appearance
Jori is a small, gourd-bodied leshy with a squat, pear-shaped torso, ridged like a pumpkin that dried in the sun. His rind is matte orange, mottled with green bruising and fine pale scars where old vines once anchored. His carved face has a jagged crescent grin and two deep, empty eye sockets; there are no eyeballs behind them. A wiry stem curls from his crown like a question mark. He perches sideways on fence rails, balancing with a root-tail and swinging his legs as if the drop below were a joke. His lantern makes the hollows of his face seem bottomless. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, meticulously folded paper map tucked beneath his rind, and studies it with the solemnity of a surveyor.
Clothing
No clothes; his rind and curling vines are his natural body.
Body language
He sits with a stillness that feels staged, then moves in sudden, springy hops. His stem twitches before he lies, and his root-tail curls tightly around a rail when someone mentions the marsh.

Combat
AC 21 · HP 55 · 25 feetJori prefers misdirection and a fast retreat over a stand-up fight. He uses Lantern-Shadow to break an enemy's nerve, then attacks from cover with seedpods. He will not deliberately harm a frightened child or anyone trying to protect one. If badly pressed, he uses fence rails, hedges, and farm equipment to obstruct pursuit.

Background
Jori sprouted in a field at Brindle Row, a farmstead whose old name came from the long-vanished ditch crew that once worked there. He was grown from a discarded lantern-gourd after a late frost ruined the crop. At first the children treated him as a scarecrow, until he learned to make the lantern's shadow grin and began ambushing them from fence posts. His pranks became a seasonal ritual, and he grew fond of the children he frightened. During a spring flood, he saw a child named Nessa swept toward the millrace and leapt down to distract her with a monstrous shadow until her older brother could pull her clear. The near-drowning changed his idea of what a scare was for: fear could warn, not only amuse. Now he maps culverts and weak fences, quietly trying to keep the farm children safe. He is close to Nessa, now a practical young apprentice, but she wants him to stop frightening her little cousins. The farm's new steward, Dast Kvel, plans to drain the marshy patch where Jori's seed-vine still grows, and Jori has not found the courage to tell him why that patch matters.
