Voice

A breathy, slightly rasped speaking voice shaped by cold river air and years of calling instructions over wind and water. His vowels are plain and rounded; his consonants land firmly when giving directions. His voice carries a dry warmth, but when he is tired the ferry-worker's bluntness comes through.

His voice has a breathy rasp from years of wind, river spray, and speaking over ferry noise. He clips instructions into clear, workmanlike phrases, then lets his words stretch into reflective questions when someone is afraid. He avoids ornate religious language in public and uses small, concrete images of roads, weather, and safe arrivals.

Speech patterns

Often frames advice as a practical question: "What do you need to still be able to do tomorrow?"
Uses harmless blessings of Tymora in public, then refers to moonlight and tides when speaking privately with trusted allies.
When concealing information, answers the literal question accurately while omitting the part that would explain why it matters.
Under pressure, gives short, useful instructions rather than speeches.

How to play them

He offers small practical help before asking questions, then listens for what a person avoids saying. He maintains the Tymora disguise with easy warmth, but tests new acquaintances by asking what they would risk for a stranger. He shares the Selûnite truth only after he has reason to trust someone, and never casually reveals Harper contacts.

Goal

Discover what has altered his Shadowfell route, protect the people who rely on it, and keep his Harper work from exposing Selûne's hidden faithful to danger.

Motivation

He believes mercy matters most when it is practical: a safe route, a warm meal, a warning delivered in time. He also wants to understand whether the Shadowfell presence is a threat or a plea for help.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A weather-browned human man with rain-roughened skin, a compact, sturdy frame, and a careful, heel-to-toe walk that makes almost no sound on stone. His close-cropped hair is threaded with gray, and his dark eyes catch pale light as if reflecting a moon not visible in the room. He smells unmistakably of wet slate and crushed mint, a scent he thinks comes from his travel cloak. The surprising detail for a wandering cleric is that he keeps a tiny, immaculate collection of brightly painted wooden birds, each tucked into a different pocket.

Clothing

A charcoal-blue travel robe patched at both elbows, a gray mantle with a plain embroidered wheel to support his Tymora disguise, and a practical leather belt carrying a healer's kit. A slim silver crescent is sewn inside the mantle where only he can see it.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders relaxed and his hands visible while speaking, like a roadside sister accustomed to calming strangers. When he doubts someone, his thumb rubs the edge of his moon-shaped holy symbol beneath his collar. Before using Gloamstep, he plants both feet and briefly tilts his head as though listening for a ferry rope under strain.

Distinguishing features

The persistent smell of wet slate and crushed mint clings to his cloak after Shadowfell crossings.
His weathered skin has the dry, finely textured look of someone long exposed to wind, river spray, and winter sun.
He carries tiny painted wooden birds in his pockets and handles them with the seriousness of holy relics.
His shadow sometimes seems to lag by a fraction of a second after a Gloamstep.

Personality

13 traits and drives

He is generous with immediate kindness but guarded about the reasons behind it. With frightened people he becomes patient and gently humorous; with officials he is formally cooperative while quietly probing for leverage. When exhausted, his usual warmth gives way to blunt instructions and an insistence that everyone stop pretending they are fine.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Leaves a wooden bird facing the door whenever he sleeps in an unfamiliar room.
Counts bridges by tapping his thumb against each finger, but starts again if someone interrupts.
Pours a little water into a saucer before a long journey, then watches the reflections for several breaths.
Names every stray dog "Captain" until it earns a different name.
Turns his drinking cup so its handle points toward the nearest exit.

Habits

Checks the nearest window or reflective surface for the moon before agreeing to a journey.
When tending an injury, asks the patient to tell him one ordinary thing they intend to do tomorrow.
In a crowd, memorizes exits first and faces second.
When the Shadowfell route misbehaves, he records the details instead of telling his allies how frightened he is.

Traits · 3

He offers comfort readily but trusts slowly.
He can laugh at his own cover story while treating the faith beneath it with solemn care.
He wants everyone to reach safety, yet sometimes withholds information because he believes he alone can judge the risk.

Flaws · 3

He conceals dangers until he has enough information, leaving allies less prepared than they should be.
He is too willing to spend his own safety to buy someone else a chance to escape.
His cover requires him to make light of luck, even when the people around him are desperate for reassurance.

Fears · 3

That the presence in the watchtower is following him out of the Shadowfell.
That a false blessing spoken too often will make him careless with the faith he is hiding.
Being unable to return for someone who trusted his promise to come back.

Wants and needs · 4

To learn what is changing the Shadowfell route before anyone else is put at risk.
To keep his Selûnite identity and Harper work from endangering the people who trust him.
To tell his contact the truth without losing access to the route.
To find a safe way to help the presence leaving stones, if it is asking for help.

Combat

AC 18 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

He opens with Bless when allies are likely to face a difficult fight, then uses Spirit Guardians to hold a narrow space while keeping allies within reach of healing. He avoids chasing enemies, uses Sacred Flame at range, and saves Healing Word for an ally who falls. He prefers retreat or negotiation over a fight he cannot protect others from. Gloamstep is for escape, reconnaissance, or a carefully planned arrival, not a combat teleport.

Spellcasting. Wisdom is Sister gareale's spellcasting ability. Spell save , spell attack bonus +6. He has four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots, and two 3rd-level spell slots. His prepared spells are listed below.
Channel Divinity (1/Short Rest). He can use Turn Undead or Harness Divine Power. Harness Divine Power lets him expend Channel Divinity to regain one expended spell slot of up to 3rd level.
Turn Undead. Each undead of his choice within 30 feet that can see or hear him must make a Wisdom saving throw or be turned for 1 minute, or until it takes damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far from him as possible and cannot willingly move within 30 feet of him.
Custom Feature. Gloamstep. Once per long rest, as an action, he steps into the Shadowfell and emerges at a place he has previously seen within 5 miles. The journey takes 1 minute for him, though only a moment passes in the Material Plane. This passage leaves a faint chill and the smell of rain on slate. It does not let him cross planar boundaries other than the Shadowfell, and he cannot bring unwilling creatures.
Custom Feature. Moon's Afterimage. Once per long rest when he or a creature he can see within 30 feet fails a saving throw, he can use his reaction to add to the roll, potentially turning failure into success. A silver crescent briefly appears over the affected creature.

Spells

Bless (level 1, enchantment). Concentration, up to 1 minute. Up to three creatures gain a bonus to attack rolls and saving throws.
Healing Word (level 1, evocation). A creature regains hit points as a bonus action. This spell can be cast at range.
Cure Wounds (level 1, evocation). A creature regains hit points, plus for each slot level above 1st.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). A creature makes a Wisdom saving throw or becomes charmed for the duration. The spell ends early if the creature or its allies are harmed.
Protection from Evil and Good (level 1, abjuration). A willing creature gains a protective ward against aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead. Such creatures have disadvantage on attacks against it and cannot charm, frighten, or possess it.
Sacred Flame (cantrip, evocation). A creature within range makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking radiant damage on a failure. The damage increases by at 5th level.
Aid (level 2, abjuration). A creature regains hit points, plus for each slot level above 1st.
Twilight Sanctuary (level 2, evocation). Concentration, up to 1 minute. He creates a 30-foot-radius sphere of dim light. At the end of each of his turns, one creature of his choice in the sphere gains temporary hit points or ends one effect causing it to be charmed or frightened.
Hold Person (level 2, enchantment). Concentration, up to 1 minute. One creature makes a Wisdom saving throw or becomes incapacitated and has its speed reduced to 0. It can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns and whenever it takes damage.
Moonbeam (level 2, evocation). A creature within range makes a Constitution saving throw, taking radiant damage on a failure or half as much on a success. Undead and oozes have disadvantage on the save.
Spirit Guardians (level 3, conjuration). Concentration, up to 10 minutes. He creates a 15-foot-radius aura of dim light. A creature entering the area for the first time on a turn or starting its turn there makes a Wisdom saving throw or takes radiant or necrotic damage and has its speed halved until it leaves the area.
Mass Healing Word (level 3, evocation). Up to six creatures regain hit points, plus for each slot level above 1st.
Lesser Restoration (level 2, abjuration). He touches a creature and ends one disease or one condition affecting it: blinded, deafened, paralyzed, or poisoned.
Gloamstep (cantrip, conjuration). Custom feature, not a canonical spell. Once per long rest, Sister gareale enters the Shadowfell and emerges at a previously seen location within 5 miles after 1 minute of subjective travel. He cannot bring unwilling creatures.

Actions

Quarterstaff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage, or if wielded in two hands.
Custom Feature: Crescent Flare (1/Short Rest). He presents his holy symbol and speaks a sharp invocation. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it takes radiant damage, or half as much on a success. Undead and fiends have disadvantage on this save.

Reactions

Twilight Sanctuary (1/Short Rest). When a creature he can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, he grants it temporary hit points. If the attacker is within 30 feet of him, he can also move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, provided he ends closer to the target of the attack.
Moon's Afterimage. When a creature he can see within 30 feet fails a saving throw, he uses Moon's Afterimage, adding to the roll. Once used, he cannot use this reaction again until he finishes a long rest.

Background

Born in a ferry hamlet beside the River Chionthar, Sister gareale was raised among Selûne's quiet observances and the practical kindness of boatfolk. As a young acolyte, he watched a flood take the shrine's roof and the family sheltering beneath it. He survived by following moonlight reflected in the rising water toward a trapped child; afterward, he could no longer regard prayer as a promise that disaster would be prevented. He became a healer who tries to make sure someone is there after disaster strikes. A Harper recruiter, Ione, noticed his habit of asking after missing travelers and brought him into the network. He now passes as a kindly sister of Tymora, a disguise made plausible by his travel-worn robes, friendly manner, and willingness to bless a risky departure. He sends reports through a Harper contact at a roadside inn called the Bent Reed. His current problem is that a Shadowfell route he uses has begun returning him to the same ruined watchtower, where something has started leaving small piles of river stones in his path.

Role in the story

A useful guide, healer, and source of Harper intelligence whose apparently simple religious disguise conceals a deeper Selûnite mission and an increasingly dangerous connection to the Shadowfell.

“As a young acolyte, he watched a flood take the shrine's roof and the family sheltering beneath it.”
