At the table

Voice

A dry, resonant rasp with a faint gravelly buzz beneath each word, as though her chest carries the memory of moving stone. Steam and greenhouse work have given her clear projection without a shout. When she laughs, the sound comes in two abrupt bursts, then stops as if she has remembered something unfinished.

She speaks in compact, work-worn phrases, with the steady cadence of someone accustomed to being heard over steam vents and irrigation noise. Her descriptions are physical and specific: water has a bite, a channel has a temper, a contract has a leak. She does not raise her voice to show anger; she names the consequence she expects and waits for an answer.

Speech patterns

Turns abstract arguments into questions about water, labor, and repair.
Uses short, concrete comparisons drawn from growing and channel maintenance.
Repeats a person's key phrase back to them when she suspects they are hiding their real concern.
Gives firm instructions in the same matter-of-fact tone she uses to discuss planting.

How to play them

Start with the practical problem the characters can see, such as a delayed shipment, disputed water turn, or troubled spring. Dazkli shares useful facts readily but asks what the characters intend to do for the workers affected. She responds well to honest uncertainty and concrete plans, and poorly to grand promises that ignore maintenance or local consent.

Goal

Keep the terrace springs under local stewardship and identify the source of the new mineral taint before the next major planting.

Motivation

Protect the people who maintain the terraces, preserve fair access to spring water, and make sure local growers can survive without surrendering control of their channels.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Dazkli has the dense, kiln-fired look of a figure shaped from dark volcanic glass: a broad face, rounded jaw, and skin patterned with fine seams that glow dull orange when she is exerting herself. Her hair is cropped close at the sides and gathered into a compact, stubborn crest, its strands like black mineral fibers. She moves with deliberate weight, then turns with startling quickness, as if a hillside has decided to step aside. Her coat is patched with square pieces of greenhouse canvas, each repair carefully stitched in bright, practical thread. The cuffs are stained green from lichen beds, but she keeps one small brass watering nozzle polished to a mirror shine. Unexpectedly, she wears a tiny, hand-carved wooden bird tucked into her collar, replacing it whenever a worker's child gives her a new one.

Clothing

A soot-dark work coat repaired with greenhouse canvas, layered over a heat-resistant wrap and sturdy terrace boots. Her clothing is clean where it matters for inspecting water, visibly patched elsewhere, and her brass watering nozzle is conspicuously well cared for.

Body language

She plants both feet as if testing the ground's stability, then leans forward when someone mentions a damaged channel or an unpaid crew. When weighing a decision, she rubs a thumb along the polished watering nozzle at her collar. Anger shows as a sudden stillness and a tightening glow beneath her skin, not as a change in manners.

Personality

13 traits and drives

She is patient with tired workers and exacting with people who make promises on their behalf. In a council meeting she listens long enough to find the point of disagreement; in a crisis she becomes direct and physically decisive. She enjoys small celebrations after a successful harvest, yet refuses to pretend a good season has solved a bad water system.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

Tastes a drop of water before discussing it, then describes its mineral character as if it were a person.
Counts the beats between a vent's hiss and its next release whenever she enters a greenhouse.
Straightens crooked seed labels while listening to arguments.
Keeps a pocketful of smooth, warm stones and sorts them by the sound they make when tapped together.

Habits

Before agreeing to a proposal, she asks who will repair the channel if it fails.
She checks spring water by touch and smell, even when a trained steward has already tested it.
In public disputes she lets each side finish, then repeats their practical demands in plain language.
When a worker is in immediate danger, she abandons procedure and moves first.

Traits · 3

Patient with people doing difficult work, impatient with anyone treating that work as disposable.
Careful about evidence, but willing to act abruptly when someone is in danger.
Proud of the Guild's practical victories, yet wary of becoming a symbol rather than a useful leader.

Flaws · 3

She takes on too many inspections personally and is slow to delegate decisions that affect water access.
Her distrust of coercive contracts can make her assume bad faith before she has all the facts.
She sometimes delays public action while seeking one more measurement, even when people need an immediate answer.

Fears · 3

That the spring contamination will spread before she can convince the growers to reduce their draw.
That another crisis will force her to choose between protecting a cause and protecting the people standing behind it.
That merchants will turn the Guild's practical cooperation into a lever for controlling local water.

Wants and needs · 4

Reliable confirmation of which springs are affected by the mineral taint.
A way to protect growers from panic and predatory contracts without concealing urgent risks.
More time for the Guild's stewards to take responsibility for routine inspections.
A fair hearing for workers whose evidence challenges the merchants' account of water quality.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 45 · 30 ft.

Dazkli protects workers and avoids fights that can be ended through negotiation. If combat begins, she uses terrain and control spells to separate aggressors from bystanders, keeping plant growth and stone cover between enemies and vulnerable people. She favors Entangle or Spike Growth to limit movement, then uses Scorching Ray or Cinderstone Hurl against immediate threats. She saves Spring-Vent Burst for clustered attackers or a desperate escape, and uses Healing Word when an ally falls. She retreats toward known terraces and channels rather than pursuing fleeing enemies.

Geothermal Adaptation (custom): Dazkli is adapted to extreme heat and has resistance to fire damage.
Volcanic Voice (custom): She can send a short spoken message through connected stone within 60 feet; the recipient hears it as a low vibration.
Spellcasting. Wisdom is her spellcasting ability. Spell save , spell attack bonus +7. She has four 1st-level, three 2nd-level, and three 3rd-level spell slots.
Land's Stride. Nonmagical difficult terrain made of plants or natural stone does not cost her extra movement, and she has advantage on saving throws against magically created or manipulated plants that impede movement.
Circle of the Land (custom geothermal circle): Once per turn when she deals fire damage with a spell, she can add 3 fire damage to one target of that spell.

Spells

Entangle (level 1, conjuration). Creates a grasping growth that restrains creatures in a 20-foot square unless they succeed on a Strength saving throw. Useful for stopping pursuers or controlling a terrace approach.
Healing Word (level 1, evocation). A creature within range regains + her spellcasting ability modifier hit points. A bonus-action casting suited to getting a fallen ally back on their feet.
Burning Hands (level 1, evocation). A wave of fire springs from her hands in a 15-foot cone. Creatures make a Dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage on a failure or half on a success.
Lesser Restoration (level 2, abjuration). A creature she touches regains + her spellcasting ability modifier hit points. She can also end one disease or a condition among blinded, deafened, paralyzed, or poisoned.
Spike Growth (level 2, transmutation). She creates a 20-foot-radius area of thorny growth. A creature moving through it takes piercing damage for every 5 feet traveled.
Scorching Ray (level 2, evocation). She sends three scorching rays at one or more targets within range. Each ranged spell attack that hits deals fire damage.
Wall of Fire (level 3, evocation). She conjures a wall of fire up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. Creatures in its area make a Dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage on a failure or half on a success; creatures that end their turn near the hot side may also be burned.
Meld into Stone (level 3, transmutation). She transforms earth or stone in a 40-foot cube for the duration, shaping a channel, closing a breach, or creating a path through loose ground.
Wall of Thorns (level 3, conjuration). She conjures a wall of thorny plants that blocks sight and movement. A creature moving through it takes piercing damage for every 5 feet traveled.

Actions

Cinderstone Hurl. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 () bludgeoning damage as a fist-sized clot of hot stone strikes the target.
Spellcasting. Dazkli casts one prepared spell of 1st through 3rd level, expending a spell slot as usual. Her prepared spells include the spells listed in this profile.
Spring-Vent Burst (Recharge 5–6). Dazkli drives her staff into the ground and vents a 15-foot cone of scalding vapor. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 () fire damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also cannot take reactions until the start of its next turn. Recharge 5–6.

Reactions

Raise the Terrace. When a creature Dazkli can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, she can expend a spell slot to throw up a sudden ridge of stone around it. The target gains a bonus to AC against the triggering attack, potentially causing it to miss, and gains temporary hit points equal to 5 plus the spell slot's level. The ridge crumbles immediately afterward.

Background

Dazkli grew up tending steam-tolerant fungi and lichen beds on the terraces above the Ashen Shelf. She learned to judge water by the mineral taste left on a fingertip and to read a spring's health from the hiss of its vents. As a young terrace tender, she helped organize growers when merchants began imposing contracts that paid less than the cost of repairing channels. The blockade she helped lead was orderly until a damaged sluice sent scalding water through a lower work row. Dazkli had to choose between keeping the harvest line moving and breaking the blockade to rescue trapped workers. She broke it, lost a season's crop, and spent months helping rebuild the channels. That choice made her a leader workers could trust, but it also taught her that a righteous cause can still hurt the people it claims to protect. The Silt Guild later chose her as High Overseer and chair of the Growers' Council. Now she mediates water turns, pushes back against coercive contracts, and investigates a mineral taste appearing in several spring channels. She depends on the growers' stewards for local knowledge and keeps a tense working relationship with Aethel-Vazhar's customs inspectors, who can delay shipments but cannot make the terraces produce. Her present problem is that the suspicious water readings are worsening just as merchants press for a new harvest contract.

Role in the story

A civic leader, source of local expertise, and possible ally in conflicts over water access. Her concern about the spring taint can draw characters into a mystery involving damaged channels, contested contracts, or a threat beneath the terraces.
