At the table
Voice
His voice comes from a sturdy chest and years of giving instructions across wind, engines, and gunfire. It is clear, forward, and conversational, with a dry rasp after long days outdoors. Excitement makes him faster and louder; fear makes him precise and factual rather than soft or subdued. His regional inflections drift over time, as if different stretches of land have left small marks on his speech.
Friendly and plainspoken, with a practical soldier's habit of putting the important fact first. His words can come quickly and loudly when he is relaxed, then turn clipped and procedural under pressure. Years on the road have given him a changing patchwork of regional turns of phrase; the shifts are subtle but noticeable to anyone who knows him well.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with practical conversation and give him room to choose where he stands. Earn trust by respecting boundaries, protecting civilians, and treating his field knowledge seriously. Do not force him to discuss his children or the strange things he has seen; a patient, specific question may earn more than a demand. If supernatural danger appears, give him clear observations he cannot perceive for himself.
Goal
Find the source of the impossible tracks and sightings before they reach his children, while learning whether the place-born are connected to the phenomena he hunts.
Motivation
The need to protect his people and children wars with a relentless desire to know what is waiting in the dark. He wants to believe that knowledge can keep everyone safe, though every answer makes him less certain.
Appearance
A fresh-faced young man with rugged, unshowy handsomeness, taller than most and leanly powerful. Wheat-dark blond hair, sunlit at the tips, is clipped with near-ritual neatness: the sort of careful trim that looks practical until you notice it is always exact. He wears his shoulders square but leaves a deliberate pocket of empty space around himself, even in a crowded room, as though his body has drawn an invisible frontier. His movement is loose and economical until he startles, when he goes still as a fence post. A detail unexpected in a veteran hunter: he carries a small, neatly folded paper napkin in his breast pocket and uses it to wipe dust from his rifle sights.
Clothing
A weathered suede coat over a plain cotton shirt, practical trousers, boots, and a restrained Cold War-era military kit. He dislikes formal finery, calling it clothes made for people who do not walk anywhere.
Body language
He stands with a relaxed frontier slouch that still keeps his balance under him. His gaze checks windows and tree lines before faces. He talks with his hands, but rarely lets anyone close enough to touch his shoulder. When anxious, he rubs a thumb along the rifle's worn stock and stares at empty corners.

Personality
19 traits and drivesAlfred is generous with his own people yet guarded with almost everyone else, curious about unfamiliar traditions but quick to judge the people who carry them. In easy company he is loud, friendly, and competitive; when family is mentioned he turns evasive and brisk. He claims he can be cruel when necessity demands it, but his instincts repeatedly pull him toward protecting those with less power. Devout in belief and irreverent toward rules, he trusts discipline in the field more than authority in a room.
- Alignment
- Neutral Good, with an authoritarian streak when he believes his people are in danger.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 195 · 30 ft.He uses cover, distance, and patience, preferring to identify the threat before firing. He prioritizes spellcasters and creatures threatening civilians, relocates after loud shots, and uses his survival skills to pick ground with clear sightlines. Against supernatural enemies he cannot perceive, he relies on allies' warnings and becomes markedly less confident. He will retreat rather than pretend that courage makes him immune to terror.

Background
Alfred was born when thirteen colonies declared themselves a country, and grew into adulthood far faster than Arthur expected. Arthur gave him the name Alfred, and Alfred has always treated that bond as more important than the rumors about whether Berwald, Nils, or Allister might have been his biological father. He remembers his mother with tenderness tangled in old hurt, and remembers a younger, quieter life he refuses to describe for long. Wars turned him into a disciplined soldier and, eventually, a hunter of reports that ordinary soldiers could not explain. A formative night came during a campaign when a patrol vanished in a patch of purple fog. Alfred heard familiar voices calling from beyond the trees, saw nothing, and ran until dawn. He has never forgiven himself for surviving by refusing to look back. Since then he has collected accounts of cryptids, strange lights, and impossible tracks, while privately dreading that the trail leads back to place-born beings like himself. He has many children, one associated with each state and another with the capital, though he is not the biological father of all of them. He loves them fiercely and keeps their existence hidden from foreign place-born, convinced secrecy is protection. His old military friend who gave him the painting of a one-eyed red horse is gone from his daily life, but the painting remains with him. He is currently following scattered reports of thunderbirds and horned serpents, and avoiding Arthur, Reilly, Rhys, and Allister whenever the investigation turns toward the uncanny.
Role in the story
A formidable but uneasy ally, rival marksman, or investigator who can lead the party into a wilderness mystery. His search for the uncanny can reveal threats, but his fear and secrecy may complicate the party's efforts. He is also a reminder that a powerful figure can be brave in battle and terrified of what he cannot see.
“He remembers his mother with tenderness tangled in old hurt, and remembers a younger, quieter life he refuses to describe for long.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. His first loyalty is to the people and children tied to the fifty states; his military service and investigations have left him with scattered former comrades but no dependable institution.
