At the table

Voice

A dry, rough voice with a slight catch before many sentences, shaped by disuse, cold air, and the effort of keeping his hunger hidden. His words are crisp when he is trying to appear composed; under pressure, they come out in short, hard bursts.

His voice catches slightly at the start of sentences, as if his throat must remember how to work. Years of cold air, dust, and disuse give it a dry, rough edge. He speaks carefully and formally when performing control, then drops into abrupt, blunt phrases when angry or hungry. His account of the grave is matter-of-fact, which makes it more disturbing.

Speech patterns

Uses clipped, formal statements when trying to sound in control.
Turns political arguments into lists of who deserves punishment.
Calls himself Günther when asked for a name, then watches closely to see whether the listener accepts it.
When describing his earliest memory, speaks literally about chewing the shroud and avoids speculation about who he was before.

How to play them

Approach him without cornering him or asking immediately about the bunker. He responds best to calm, direct conversation and practical offers, but tests whether people are judging him. Treat his beliefs as a danger rather than debating them as harmless eccentricity. If someone threatens István or discovers the bunker, Valentin becomes evasive and may turn violent.

Goal

Keep his shelter secret, keep István close, and find a way to control his hunger without admitting how much he depends on another person.

Motivation

He wants to turn his hunger and guilt into a purpose he can live with. He is also driven by the simpler need to protect István and preserve the bunker that has become the closest thing he has to a home.

Appearance

Valentin looks like a well-kept sixteen-year-old who has dressed carefully for a life he no longer has: pale skin, combed blond hair, and a coat brushed clean despite the damp grit of his surroundings. His skin takes on a faint, unsettling warmth after he feeds; when starved, his blue eyes cloud toward sickly yellow. He moves with careful, economical steps, then abruptly snaps into motion as if some unseen leash has been released. In a room, he studies the brightest and darkest patches before he looks at faces, and stark transitions between them can leave him briefly disoriented. The incongruity people remember is his fastidiousness: even after crawling through a flooded bunker, he tries to smooth his collar and wipe his shoes.

Clothing

A clean, repaired dark wool coat over a plain shirt, practical trousers, and worn boots. He favors clothes that can pass unnoticed in a city, but keeps a folded burial shroud hidden in the bunker.

Body language

He holds himself upright with an almost old-fashioned pride, shoulders squared and chin set. His gaze sweeps light and shadow before it settles on people. When startled, his whole body goes rigid; when hunger wins, his head tilts toward a pulse and his hands open like a striking animal's.

Distinguishing features

His pale skin grows faintly warm after feeding and waxen when starved.

He inspects the room's light and shadow before looking at its people.
He keeps himself strikingly groomed despite living in a damp, decaying bunker.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Proud and meticulously controlled in ordinary conversation, Valentin can become startlingly impulsive when hunger or ideology takes hold. He wants to believe he is a deliberate judge of the guilty, yet the sight of a frightened person can sometimes make him hesitate. With strangers he is guarded and rehearsed; with István he is still defensive, but allows awkward scraps of affection through. When disoriented by dramatic light, his certainty collapses into suspicion.

Alignment
Ruthlessly ideological, with a remnant of conscience he insists is weakness.

Quirks

Chews the edge of his hidden burial shroud when frightened or forced to wait.
Counts the separate pools of light in a room before choosing where to stand.
Smooths his collar after a fight, even with blood on his hands.
Sets found objects in tidy rows, then denies that the arrangement matters.
Repeats a stranger's name once under his breath, as if testing whether it fits them.

Habits

Checks the room's brightest and darkest areas before settling anywhere.
Keeps his clothes and small possessions orderly even when his surroundings are filthy.
When hungry, watches people's throats and hands rather than meeting their eyes.
Returns to the bunker by indirect routes and checks for signs that anyone has followed him.
After violence, invents a political justification quickly, as if the explanation must arrive before remorse.

Traits · 4

He insists that discipline can master hunger, but makes excuses when it does not.
He treats strangers as potential threats and István as family, though he struggles to show tenderness.
He is proud of his appearance and ashamed of his dependence on theft.
He can be frighteningly decisive about an enemy, then unexpectedly hesitate when confronted with ordinary fear.

Flaws · 4

He confuses conviction with morality and uses ideology to excuse choosing victims.
Hunger can overwhelm his plans and make him reckless.
He is proud, secretive, and unwilling to ask for help until danger is immediate.
Harsh shifts between deep shadow and glaring light can disorient him.

Fears · 3

That István will see him as a monster and leave.
That he will eventually forget even the memory of the shroud and have no proof of his own beginning.
That there is no human self left to recover.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs regular blood or corpse flesh to keep hunger from overwhelming his judgment.
Wants to keep his partly flooded bunker hidden.
Needs István's continued trust, though he resists admitting it.
Wants a purpose that does not require him to admit he has chosen cruelty.

Combat

HP 12 · Custom encounter guidance: moves at an ordinary human walking pace; can make a sudden short lunge in close combat.

Custom encounter guidance: Valentin avoids a fair fight. He stalks isolated targets, uses darkness and clutter for cover, and tries to feed early. Bright, sharply contrasting light can disorient him and interrupt a pursuit. If badly hurt or confronted by someone he considers family, he may break off rather than fight to the death.

Custom feature, Grave-Returned. Valentin does not need to breathe and can cling to rough walls or ceilings at a slow crawl.
Custom feature, Corpse-Eater. He can consume a corpse to steady his hunger. Fresh blood also restores his warmth and composure, but neither removes his need to feed.
Custom feature, Blood-Scent. At close range, he can identify a living creature by its scent and tell whether it is wounded.
Custom feature, Hunger-Sick. Prolonged starvation turns his eyes yellow, clouds his judgment, and makes him more likely to pursue prey.

Actions

Bite and Feed. Custom action: Valentin lunges and bites a nearby target. On a successful attack in the table's chosen resolution method, the target suffers a serious wound and Valentin takes the target's blood, briefly restoring his warmth. He prefers to strike from concealment.
Grave Claws. Custom action: He rakes a target with both hands. On a successful attack, deal 2 custom harm. This is a close-range attack, not a rules claim from a published system.
Sudden Rush. Custom action: He hurls a loose object or makes a sudden rush to force a target to retreat or lose their footing. Resolve with the table's normal method; this does not cause harm unless the situation warrants it.

Reactions

Guard the Familiar. Custom reaction: If a nearby ally is threatened, Valentin may abandon his current target and rush to intervene. Use the table's normal resolution method; if the threat is directed at István, Valentin acts even when doing so is tactically poor.
Light-Shift Disorientation. Custom reaction: When exposed to an abrupt, severe contrast between glare and darkness, Valentin loses his bearings for a moment. The GM may interrupt his current pursuit or make his next action harder using the table's normal resolution method.

Background

Valentin remembers nothing of his life before waking as a Nachzehrer beneath a grave. His first surviving memory is of the coffin pressing against him and the taste of his own burial shroud as he chewed through it to reach the soil. He emerged into a world that had moved on without him, hungry and terrified, and learned to hunt before he learned how to explain what he was. During the First World War he deserted, convinced that leaving was a failure he could never repair. When the Second World War came, he joined eagerly, mistaking its familiar uniforms, commands, and certainty for a way to make himself whole. He has spent decades trying to impose hard, brutal ideologies on his hunger, selecting victims he judges to be enemies of his chosen cause. Those beliefs give his violence a script, not a cure. He still does not understand that the boy in his reflection has not aged. In 2026 he has no job, home, or reliable income; he robs people for money and useful goods, then vanishes into a partly flooded bunker near Berlin. He guards its entrance fiercely. His one steady companion is István, a patient, practical man who treats him like family despite knowing enough to be afraid. Valentin calls him family too, though he rarely says it aloud. His immediate problems are a worsening hunger, a bunker that is taking on more water, and the possibility that one of his latest victims' associates will find where he sleeps.

Role in the story

A dangerous, sorrowful urban predator whose self-made ideology conceals a desperate struggle to retain some humanity. He can be an antagonist, a fragile source of local information, or an uneasy ally whose choices test the party's willingness to distinguish a person from the excuses they make.

“His first surviving memory is of the coffin pressing against him and the taste of his own burial shroud as he chewed through it to reach the soil.”
