Quinn Pike
Quinn Pike
At the table
Voice
His new voice has a low, slightly rough edge, like breath pushed through a narrow chimney. It carries the clipped clarity of someone used to explaining observations at work, but breaks into a dry rasp after long travel or when the Firedrake's heat rises. The unfamiliar depth still catches him off guard.
He speaks plainly and with a habit of stating observations as if writing a laboratory report. When anxious, his sentences grow over-specific; when angry, he gets faster and more direct rather than quieter. He sometimes starts a sentence in his remembered old voice and has to correct himself when the new, deeper sound comes out.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Quinn as an adult with agency, not as a puzzle or a danger to be managed. Ask before accepting his protection, and be direct if it is unwelcome. He responds well to practical tasks and honest questions, but may need time before discussing his former life, his body, or Nora.
Goal
Find a way to understand and control the Firedrake inheritance, while keeping the Seven at the Split Hearth safe long enough to discover whether he can return to the life he remembers.
Motivation
To protect the people beside him without becoming someone who decides their lives for them, and to learn whether his draconic inheritance can be understood rather than merely feared.
Appearance
Quinn is newly tall enough to keep catching his shoulders on doorframes, and he moves as if he expects the extra reach of his arms to surprise him. His gait is quick and slightly forward-leaning, with a habit of planting himself between danger and whoever is nearest. Soot-dark scales, fine as roughened lacquer, gather along his collarbones and knuckles; they catch light like wet pitch. A sparse, uneven beard is coming in along his jaw, and his body hair seems to have appeared faster than he can decide what to do about it. His clothes are borrowed and badly fitted: sleeves end too high, the belt is cinched tight, and he keeps tugging the collar closed. The unexpected detail is a tiny paper bird, carefully folded from a laboratory label, pinned inside his coat where he can touch it without anyone seeing.
Clothing
A borrowed wool coat with sleeves too short, a linen shirt buttoned incorrectly at the throat, a patched belt, sturdy trousers, and boots chosen for walking rather than fit. He keeps the coat closed even when warm.
Body language
He braces his feet as if a sudden shove is always possible and keeps his hands busy with buckles, sleeves, or the edge of his belt. When embarrassed, he angles his shoulders away and checks the room for tasks. Around Nora he watches too closely for danger, then makes himself look elsewhere when he notices her noticing.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesQuinn is blunt and earnest, but not uncomplicatedly brave: he takes responsibility quickly because waiting feels like a way to lose people. In a crisis he becomes focused and practical; afterward he may be awkward, defensive, or suddenly ashamed of how forceful he was. He is curious about old histories and patient with objects, yet impatient with his own unfamiliar body. He wants closeness, especially with Nora, but fear makes him put himself between her and the world rather than stand beside her.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though fear can make him controlling.

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Quinn has no formal training and should not be treated as a seasoned adventurer. He uses cover, keeps close to allies who need protection, and swings his hatchet only when forced. He saves his single daily Firedrake Spark for a desperate opening or to frighten a pursuer, not as a reliable source of damage.

Background
Before the transformation, Quinn Pike was a laboratory assistant and history enthusiast from Saxony, near the Harz mountains. He liked cataloguing old objects and correcting dates in other people's notes, and thought of his life as something he could keep orderly by observing it closely. That confidence broke when a strange draconic change remade his body into that of an eighteen-year-old man. His new height, strength, deeper voice, facial and body hair, and unfamiliar surges of hunger, anger, and libido have left him self-conscious and unsettled. He remembers his former family and friends, and any partner or children he may have left behind, with painful clarity. On the first night after the change, the displaced party had not understood what had happened, so Quinn shared the room assigned to the women. He is now part of the Seven at the Split Hearth, an accidental fellowship of displaced adventurers. He is fiercely protective of Nora, partly because he is frightened of losing another person he loves; she sometimes experiences his efforts to shield her as a painful refusal to trust her. Quinn is trying to learn what the Firedrake inheritance means while keeping the group fed, safe, and together.
Role in the story
A displaced fellow adventurer whose transformation brings questions of identity, fear, and chosen responsibility into the party. Quinn can be a useful novice ally and a source of historical knowledge, while his strained protectiveness toward Nora creates a conflict the group can address through trust rather than force.
