Mieszko
Mieszko
At the table
Voice
A low, slightly rasped speaking voice with a Polish cadence and the clipped clarity of someone accustomed to dictation and laboratory notes. Its new resonance can startle Mieszko as much as it does listeners. When excited by a historical clue, the pace quickens; when angry, consonants land hard and the questions become blunt.
Mieszko speaks in carefully assembled sentences, with a Polish cadence shaped by years of reading aloud and taking dictation. He favors exact verbs and specific questions, and his humor tends toward dry observation. His lowered voice has a slightly rough, newly resonant edge that catches in his throat when he is tired. Anger makes him more direct and emphatic, not quieter or more courteous.

How to play them
Meet Mieszko's questions with concrete answers and treat his account of his former life as real. Mieszko responds well to patient collaboration, shared investigation, and clear boundaries. Do not presume the crush on Alix is mutual or that Mieszko's changing body determines his character.
Goal
Discover what is causing the chest heat and fire-haunted dreams, while preserving the truth of his former life and building an honest place in the Seventh Roll.
Motivation
Curiosity is Mieszko's way of making fear usable. He wants to understand the change without letting any explanation, whether scholarly or draconic, erase the person he remembers being.
Appearance
Mieszko has the arresting, outsized presence of a figure lifted from a Polish fireside legend: tall, broad through the shoulders, and still learning how much room his changed body takes up. His dark hair is meticulously combed and tied at the nape with a strip of linen, while a neat new beard is being coaxed into order with more care than his patched cuffs receive. His skin is fair with a wind-reddened cast; a faint, emberlike flush sometimes shows at the hollow of his throat when the heat in his chest rises. He moves with an alert, measured tread, but occasionally misjudges a doorway or the force of his own grip. The unexpected detail is his immaculate grooming: even after a night on the road, he has combed his beard and polished the lenses of his spectacles before checking his boots.
Clothing
A weather-dark wool coat with carefully mended elbows, a high linen collar, sturdy travel trousers, and boots kept clean at the seams. Mieszko wears a small leather case for notes under the coat and keeps a comb tucked beside it.
Body language
Mieszko squares up as if making room for a taller person, then remembers that he is now the taller person. He keeps one hand near his notes and uses the other to indicate distances carefully, wary of knocking things over. When uncomfortable, he smooths his beard or checks his collar; when focused, he leans toward evidence until spectacles nearly touch it.

Personality
16 traits and drivesMieszko is curious and wry, and can make a frightened room feel manageable by asking what happened in what order. That composure is not the same as ease: in private, grief and bodily unfamiliarity can overwhelm him. Around practical problems he is methodical and generous; when mocked or patronized, he becomes brisk and cutting. With Alix, he is more self-conscious than he likes to admit, carefully testing his own feelings against the other person's boundaries.

Combat
AC 11 · HP 7 · 30 feetMieszko is a level-zero, noncombatant investigator, not a trained adventurer. Mieszko looks for exits, shields vulnerable companions, and uses the walking stick to make distance rather than pursue. If cornered, Mieszko may use Smok's First Breath to create an opening, then retreats and seeks cover. Mieszko avoids grappling because the new strength is unpredictable.

Background
Mieszko grew up in a Polish borderland that neighboring courts described as wild and pagan, a label he learned to hear as both insult and invitation. Before the change, Mieszko was a woman, a diligent laboratory assistant in a provincial scholarly household, and a history enthusiast who copied inscriptions for the pleasure of finding what official chronicles left out. Mieszko had a husband and remembers him clearly: his dry jokes, the warmth of his hand, and the unfinished argument they were having when Mieszko was displaced into this life. The separation remains raw, not a past life neatly folded away. The change came with no explanation. Mieszko awoke biologically male, taller and stronger, with a lower voice, facial and body hair, a larger appetite, unfamiliar anger, and a libido that felt like one more bodily fact to learn rather than an order to obey. On the first night with the Seventh Roll, after drink and exhaustion blurred the moment, Mieszko followed the women toward their two-bed room, not understanding why the others hesitated. When the truth became visible, Mieszko was shaken and withdrew, embarrassed and frightened by how quickly the world had begun sorting him differently. The fellowship responded with practical kindness, which mattered more than reassurance. Since then, Mieszko has kept records for the Seventh Roll, a displaced companions' mutual-aid fellowship, and investigates odd events with the habits of a laboratory assistant: label the sample, check the witness, ask what changed. The heat beneath the breastbone and dreams of stone halls over underground fire have begun to interrupt that work. Mieszko suspects the Smok Wawelski, a custom dragon-blood lineage tied to an old local legend, is waking in him. Mieszko is developing a crush on Alix, and is deliberately trying to make room for Alix's wishes rather than mistake desire or fear of loss for a claim.
Role in the story
A keen-eyed ally and chronicler whose investigations connect local history to a waking dragon-blood mystery. Mieszko offers a grounded perspective on displacement, memory, and bodily change, while his unresolved visions can point toward danger below the surface.
