Voice

Jor’s voice has the dry rasp of someone accustomed to salt wind and shouted instructions on a deck. Its low, rough edge sometimes slips into a throat-deep growl, especially when he is tired or speaking Troll. His Norse is fluent but overcareful, as though he is checking each phrase against a remembered script. The name Jor itself comes out clearly and firmly.

He speaks fluent Norse and Troll. Troll words slip out when he is tired, startled, or focused, and he often patches over them with a quick Norse explanation. He believes he is understood until someone proves otherwise. His sentences are tidy and courtly when he is performing his old identity, but become blunt and sensory when the glamour or composure falters.

Speech patterns

Speaks as though everyone understands him, even when he has switched into Troll.
Uses a brief Troll phrase, then immediately repeats or disguises it in Norse.
Answers emotional questions with practical observations about weather, food, or travel.
Says his name clearly and corrects anyone who calls him a troll name.

How to play them

Initially presents himself as a shaken but grateful shipwreck survivor. He is courteous and composed, answering personal questions with remembered facts but struggling to summon the associated feelings. Treat him as a person under pressure, not as a monster to expose: patience may earn trust, while sudden touch at his neck or a display of iron can trigger panic. He is likely to accept practical help, especially work beside his brothers, but avoids discussing the trolls unless he believes the listener already knows.

Goal

Earn a place in the town guard while discovering whether his memories and loyalties still belong to him.

Motivation

To reclaim a self that feels like his own without losing the family and home he has returned to.

Appearance

Jor looks like a young Norse noble who has survived a wreck and returned from a punishing voyage: clean clothes, carefully combed hair, and an unmistakable air of good birth. At 5 feet 10 inches he is taller than before, and still growing; he explains it as growing pains. His short, pale-blond hair seems to need trimming twice as often as it should. Under the human-seeming surface, his skin has a sea-slick sheen, faint scales gather behind his ears and along his ribs, and fully grown gills lie in folds on his neck. Webbing joins his fingers and toes. His teeth are a little too sharp, and his blue eyes have acquired a submerged purple cast, like mollusk dye diluted in dark water. His posture is unnervingly still: when waiting, he balances on the balls of his feet as if expecting a deck to roll beneath him. He grooms himself with almost ceremonial care, an unexpectedly fastidious habit for someone who claims to have been lost at sea. The result is a nobleman’s tidy silhouette with a suggestion of something watching from beneath it.

Clothing

A clean noble Norse outfit beneath a fur cloak when he has had time to change. On first discovery he still wears his pre-wreck clothes, ragged, salt-stiff, and soaked through. He avoids iron buckles and fittings where he can.

Body language

He stands with poised, almost courtly balance, but waits on the balls of his feet and shifts his weight like a sailor bracing against a swell. His face is calm beyond what the moment warrants. When iron is near, his fingers draw inward; when someone touches his neck, his shoulders lock and his gills flutter beneath the glamour.

Gills hidden in folds along his neck, sensitive to touch.
Webbing between fingers and toes, concealed by trollcraft when he remembers.

A faint smell of seawater that clings even to freshly washed clothes.

Personality

17 traits and drives

Jor’s old self was excitable, eager to brawl, and hungry for a chance to prove himself. He still tries to reach for that person, but the attempt often comes out as careful imitation: a remembered grin arriving a moment late, a joke repeated without its original spark. Beneath that effort is a dead calm like a still sea. He can sit through an accusation without changing expression, then be startled by a small kindness he cannot explain. In public he performs the manners of a noble son, attentive to rank and ritual; among workers he relaxes into practical talk about ropes, weather, and tools. When frightened, he becomes more formal and controlled. When angry, he does not grow louder: he fixes his attention on the person who has crossed him and speaks with unnerving directness. Around his mother, he tries hardest to seem unchanged, yet her affection can make him visibly uncertain. He wants to trust his brothers, but the missing pieces in his memory make every familiar face feel like a claim he must verify. His troll conditioning pulls against his homesickness: he can feel kinship with Peer Ludvik and pity for the trolls, while still recoiling from what they did to him. He is neither secretly eager to betray his family nor securely free of the urge to serve the trolls. He fears that a single honest answer will reveal how little he knows about himself.

Alignment
Neutral, torn between loyalty to his family and the memories the trolls have reshaped

Quirks

Counts doorways and windows whenever he enters a room, then acts as if he was merely admiring the carpentry.
Rubs a thumb over his knuckles before touching any iron object, testing the pain without seeming to.
Keeps a small bowl of seawater near his bed and wakes if it has been moved.
Trims his rapidly growing hair at odd hours, leaving the clippings arranged in a neat line.
When he cannot recall a relative’s name, he covers the pause by asking after the weather at the harbor.

Habits

Keeps his back near a wall and his attention on exits, as if the floor might shift under him.
Tests iron with a glance before accepting a tool, then handles it too carefully.
In bright sun, squints and angles his face away while pretending to study the ground.
When hungry or frightened, becomes even more motionless rather than visibly agitated.

Traits · 4

Tries to revive his former enthusiasm, but his smiles and laughter often arrive a beat late.
Courteous and socially observant, yet capable of an unsettling, unresponsive stillness.
Wants to prove himself through service, but distrusts oaths after seeing loyalty used as political leverage.
Feels an inexplicable kinship with Peer Ludvik while grieving the family bonds he cannot fully remember.

Flaws · 4

Memory gaps make him vulnerable to manipulation by anyone who confidently supplies a version of his past.
His stillness and evasions make innocent explanations sound calculated.
He conceals pain and hunger until they become difficult to control.
His new kinship with Peer Ludvik may override older loyalties.

Fears · 5

That he will hurt someone in a hunger fit or give in to cannibalistic urges.
That his family will learn what he is and treat his return as an invasion.
That the memories favoring the trolls are false, or that his resistance to them is false.
Worked iron, which stings his altered body.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 11 · 30 ft., swim 30 ft. (custom sea-troll trait)

Jor is a reluctant, untrained combatant rather than a seasoned warrior. He prefers to flee, misdirect, or let others believe he is weaker than he is. If trapped, he uses a seax or a blunt improvised weapon, aims to escape rather than kill, and uses water, darkness, or his glamour to break line of sight. Sunlight, iron, hunger, and fear of revealing his body can disrupt his decisions.

Trollcraft. Jor can use a custom, instinctive glamour to conceal his gills, webbing, scales, teeth, and slick skin. The disguise fails under close physical inspection, stress, or exposure to strong sunlight. This is a supernatural trait, not a D&D 5E spell.
Sea-troll nature. Jor can breathe air and water. He has advantage on ability checks made to swim, but currently has no regeneration.
Custom weakness. Direct contact with worked iron stings Jor. While touching iron, he has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks requiring fine manipulation. He hides this reaction carefully.
Custom predatory scent. Jor can smell fresh blood at close range. The blood of Christians is especially vivid to him, provoking hunger and distress rather than granting a mechanical benefit.

Actions

Seax. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. Jor avoids using the weapon if it contains iron.
Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. Jor uses this unarmed strike only when cornered.
Trollcraft Glamour. Custom, limited glamour. Jor can alter his visible appearance to resemble his former human self, hiding troll features. It does not change his equipment, voice, scent, or physical substance, and it is not reliable against touch or close examination.

Reactions

Flinch from the Neck. When a creature Jor can see touches his neck or exposes his gills, Jor can use his reaction to move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, provided he ends farther from that creature. This is a custom defensive response.

Services they sell

Can describe the route and conditions of the North Sea voyage, though parts of his memory are unreliable.
Can offer limited help interpreting Troll speech and customs.
May volunteer for guard work, harbor errands, and observation once he trusts the party.

Rewards they can give

A credible account of how the trolls operate and what they want from the town, if Jor is helped to recover his memories.
A potential ally in the guard, though his trust and reliability must be earned.
Evidence linking the wreck and Jor’s abduction to the town’s exile of Peer Ludvik.

Equipment

  • Seax (weapon)A plain seax he keeps for ordinary utility, not display. He avoids drawing it near anyone carrying iron.
  • Noble clothes (clothing)A clean, well-cut Norse noble outfit, used to reinforce his claim that he has simply survived a long voyage.
  • Fur cloak (clothing)A heavy fur cloak that hides his posture and the outline of his shoulders; when first found, it is wet and salt-stiff.
  • Grooming kit (personal)A small comb and grooming knife. He trims his hair frequently and keeps the comb even when traveling light.

Possessions

A comb and grooming knife
A clean noble outfit and fur cloak
A salt-damaged scrap of clothing from the wreck

Background

Jor Heimskrsson is the fifth son of Jarl Heimskr, born into a household where affection and succession were knotted together. Four older brothers already occupied the family’s future: Torvald, harbor master and raider; Benji, the jarl’s steward; Gorm, who left to join the Jomsvikings after Heimskr chose their cousin Olaf as heir; and Mikkel, a reserved, witty ranger and hunter. Olaf became law speaker. Jor was not expected to inherit, but he was expected to be useful, loyal, and capable of making a name for himself. Before the wreck, Jor was lively, quick to laugh, and quicker to accept a challenge. He wanted to join the guard and prove that a younger son could earn honor without taking it from his brothers. The town’s secession crisis soured him on the idea. He watched men turn family loyalty into political leverage and began to wonder whether a guard’s oath would make him another weapon in the dispute. His family instead arranged passage north toward Iceland, where he might win land, wealth, and a name of his own, well away from the succession struggle. The voyage ended in disaster. The ship broke against the cold North Sea, and Jor was presumed dead. In truth, trolls had taken him. His capture was punishment aimed at the town after it exiled Peer Ludvik, a Thane and folk hero exposed as a troll changeling, and after the jarl’s family broke an oath. Jor was held among the trolls, trained as a spy, and gradually changed into a sea-troll changeling. The trolls taught him their language and magic, then altered his memories until their grievances seemed more reasonable and their cruelty easier to excuse. He can still recognize his home, but faces and family ties have become unreliable. His own name remains clear to him. He knows another troll name, but clings to Jor. His first return to town is staged as a miracle. He presents himself as a survivor of the wreck, wearing the clothes he had when he vanished, still ragged and salt-water logged if first encountered before he can clean up. Later, he appears in carefully maintained noble clothing and a fur cloak. He tells people that his height and odd pallor are the effects of illness and growing pains. Trollcraft makes him look human, but never perfectly: gills twitch at his neck, webbing shows when he reaches, his hair has paled toward white, and his calm expression can look like a blank stretch of water. When he slips into Troll, he often covers it with a phrase in Norse, as though he meant to say something else. Svanhild, his mother, is overjoyed that he has returned and has set aside a room at Heimskr’s request. Heimskr has received a secret night letter warning that Jor may be a changeling and a troll spy. Olaf has also seen the letter; watching Jor alive in the hall has left him convinced he failed both Jor and Mikkel. Jor does not know either man has been warned. Torvald and Benji are the brothers Jor has asked to work beside while he recovers. Gorm is away and knows his brothers were taken, but does not know Jor has returned. Mikkel’s fate remains a live wound in the family’s affairs. Jor recognizes Peer Ludvik differently now. He no longer sees only the old family friend whom the town exiled; the altered kinship he feels through his troll nature makes Peer seem like a relative. That recognition may be genuine, implanted, or both. Jor says he sees no reason not to join the guard now, and means it, but he watches the iron weapons and is trying to learn how to hold them without pain or betraying himself. Sunlight makes him wince. He can smell Christian blood, a sensation that unsettles and tempts him. Troll corruption has also left him wary of his own hunger and the possibility of cannibalistic urges. He has not surrendered to them, but does not trust himself to be careless around the wounded. Jor’s current problem is not simply hiding what he has become. He must decide which memories are his, whether his family can be trusted with the truth, and what he owes the trolls who remade him. He wants to serve the guard, yet every iron blade is a test. He wants his mother’s welcome, yet cannot reliably remember the texture of her face. He hopes his brothers can help him recover, without knowing that some already suspect him. His return is a reprieve, not a resolution: the town may celebrate a survivor while its jarl quietly wonders whether he has welcomed an enemy into his hall.

Role in the story

A presumed-dead noble son returns as an apparent miracle survivor, bringing hope to his family and a concealed threat into the jarl’s hall. Jor can become an ally, a source of intelligence, or a tragic point of conflict if his troll conditioning is activated.
