Leddie
Leddie
At the table
Voice
Her voice has a soft rasp, like bark rubbed with damp cloth, shaped by years of whispering through root tunnels and calling directions over river noise. Words land with a slightly unexpected stress, and her breath carries a faint earthy sweetness from the fungi she tends.
She speaks in short, practical phrases, often naming a plant or route before naming a feeling. Her humor is dry and affectionate; warnings are plain and exact. She rarely uses a person's name until she trusts them.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet her with a practical need or a useful truth. She offers shelter and a small test of trust before revealing routes. Treat the forest as a home rather than a resource and she becomes warm, resourceful, and generous. Threaten its inhabitants and she stops negotiating.
Goal
Keep the glade and its hidden paths beyond the surveyors' reach while finding out whether her courier is betraying the network.
Motivation
Protect the fragile lives that depend on hidden places, and make sure no one else has to listen helplessly as a loved one disappears beneath stone.
Appearance
A diminutive Fungril woman stands amid the glade like a stump that decided to travel. Her skin is warm, weathered bark, ridged and knotty, with moss-soft seams at her elbows. An enormous, perfectly toasted sesame-seed bun caps her head; its underside is ribbed with pale gills, while wild green-and-yellow frills spill around her face like lettuce and cheese. Long, wavy moss and living vines fall over her shoulders and sway a beat after she stops. Conk fungi grow over her shoulders and hips like natural pauldrons and a bustle. Her bulbous nose sits above a kind smile and soft brown eyes that crease at the corners. When she laughs, her broad jaw opens to show flat, pale teeth made for grinding tough roots, and she chews thoughtfully even while listening. She walks with a slow, planted sway, then can dart with startling speed when a friend is in danger. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny, immaculate brass thimble tucked in her hair and polishes it with her thumb whenever she has to lie.
Clothing
A patched wrap of waxed leaves and salvaged sailcloth, tied with braided vine; a belt of seed packets, corked vials, and folded route scraps
Body language
She leans toward people as if listening through the soles of their feet. Her vines trail and catch up when she turns. One thumb repeatedly checks the brass thimble in her hair; she does it most when concealing something. Her jaw works slowly when she is weighing a promise.

Combat
HP 5She avoids a fair fight, using cover, roots, and spore clouds to split a group and open an escape path. She attacks only to protect someone or keep a route from being seized. She targets pursuers who threaten the glade, and will spend Stress to restrain rather than injure when possible.

Background
Leddie grew up in the damp hollows beneath a cedar stand, learning which fungi fed the roots and which could poison a careless forager. She became a smuggler not for treasure but because the Crown's surveyors began taxing seed, medicine, and even fallen wood. Her first hidden run carried fever tincture to a quarry camp; on the return journey, a landslide sealed the old root-tunnel and trapped her younger brother, Tavi, beyond her reach. She heard him tapping through the earth for three days before the stone went quiet. That loss changed her from a nimble opportunist into a stubborn guardian of routes and refuges. She now hides medicine, escaped laborers, and endangered seedlings along the glade's secret paths. Her oldest friend, Hedd, a ferryman at the Ford of Seven Stones, wants her to stop risking the crossings. Meanwhile, survey captain Bryn has started mapping the glade, and Leddie suspects one of her own couriers is selling those maps.
