High Commodore Bramble-Tail Joram
High Commodore Bramble-Tail Joram
At the table
Voice
A rough, chest-forward voice shaped by calling orders across rain and open water, with a faint rasp from years of damp air. Before speaking, he draws a short breath through his nose, as if checking what the wind is carrying.
His words have the clipped cadence of someone accustomed to speaking over wind, water, and rope strain. He favors concrete river images and avoids grand claims. When serious, he names the crew or community at stake before explaining the plan.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He meets strangers with a practical test: can they describe a real need, a real risk, and who else will be affected? Show concern for the crew and local communities, and he becomes candid and cooperative. Demand exclusive control of a channel or treat rescue as a bargaining chip, and he turns guarded, asks for witnesses, and insists on Alliance procedures. He respects competence more than rank.
Goal
Keep the delta's navigable waterways open to all communities while discovering what is causing the channels to silt and shift.
Motivation
Joram believes a route belongs to those who depend on it, not whoever can patrol it most heavily. He wants the Alliance to remain strong enough to protect communities without becoming a power that dictates terms to them.
Appearance
A broad-shouldered Pongid with a weather-darkened coat of stiff, wirelike hair, Joram carries his weight forward as if feeling for the raft's next shift through his feet. His fur mats into rough ridges along his forearms and shoulders, while damp green moss clings naturally to the seams of his river armor. He moves with a captain's economy, knuckles brushing a rail, tail testing a rope, amber eyes already measuring the next current. When he waits, he balances on the balls of his feet and taps one heel against the deck in time with the water. The unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully maintained garden of river mint and white flowers tucked into a cracked helm atop his cabin shelf.
Clothing
A sleeveless, oil-darkened river coat reinforced with overlapping leather scales; a faded Alliance sash; a broad belt holding line hooks, a compass, and sealed spell components; and a weatherproof hood folded down between his shoulders.
Body language
He keeps one hand or his tail in contact with the boat whenever possible. When weighing a decision, he rocks once toward the bow and once toward the stern, as if testing two currents. His amber gaze holds on whoever is speaking, but his ears and shoulders turn toward every change in water sound.

Personality
12 traits and drivesJoram is decisive under immediate threat but unusually patient when listening to people who know a place better than he does. He jokes freely among his crew, yet becomes methodical and nearly impossible to hurry when lives depend on a route. After a loss, he buries himself in repairs and patrol schedules; when rested, he can be warm, teasing, and unexpectedly fond of small comforts.

He opens with ensnaring or disruptive magic, then fires twice per turn while his midges harry a priority target or shift him out of a threatened space. He avoids killing when a disarm, forced movement, or escape will protect the convoy. If the fight turns against him, he uses the raft's channels and rigging to withdraw with the endangered crew rather than defend a prize.

Background
Joram learned the delta by hauling lines for his aunt's ferry crew, sleeping in the warm stink of wet canvas and waking whenever a channel marker shifted. He earned his first command during the Red-Water Monsoon, when floodwater tore through a stilt settlement and the ordinary rescue route became a wall of uprooted mangroves. Joram led a convoy through a narrow channel he remembered from childhood, but the crossing cost him a crew member, his closest friend, who stayed behind to cut a trapped raft loose. The experience changed his idea of command: a safe passage is not a route on a chart, but a promise made to the people aboard. He rose through the Delta Flotilla Alliance to become its senior flight-leader, coordinating river patrols and convoy escorts from his armored raft-flagship. His partner, Oru, now keeps the flagship's stores and argues that Joram cannot personally rescue every crew in the delta. His former deckhand, Beko, has become a sharp-tongued rival pilot who believes Joram's caution gives pirates too much room. Now several channels are silting in strangely fast, and Joram is trying to keep trade moving without allowing the Alliance's charts to become private property.
Role in the story
A capable ally and independent authority on the delta's waterways. Joram can guide characters through dangerous channels, provide a convoy mission, or become an obstacle if their plans endanger local access. His investigation into strange channel shifts can connect local events to wider magical instability without dictating what the characters must conclude.
