Channel-Master Kresh
Channel-Master Kresh
At the table
Voice
Kresh's voice has a dry, rasping edge, as though shaped by years of calling directions through rain and over water. His consonants land firmly, his vowels are broad and unhurried, and a brief clicking sound catches at the back of his jaw when he laughs.
His speech is clipped and directional, shaped by years of calling over wind, rain, and creaking hulls. He favors concrete terms such as current, passage, footing, and cost. He uses jokes to test whether a tense conversation can still bend, and when he is angry his words become blunt and fast.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Kresh offers reliable local knowledge to people who demonstrate respect for the delta and its communities. He tests prospective allies with practical questions about who bears the cost of a decision. He will negotiate firmly, but can be persuaded by evidence, a credible rescue plan, or an honest admission of uncertainty.
Goal
Keep the Whispering Delta's channels navigable as shared routes, expose whoever is engineering the blockages, and train a successor who will improve on his methods.
Motivation
Kresh believes shared routes survive only when people accept shared responsibility. He wants the Alliance to be trusted by small settlements as much as by merchants with armed escorts.
Appearance
Kresh is a broad, thick-scaled Saurian, mud-green along the shoulders and mottled with ochre flecks down his flanks. His scales have the matte, pebbled texture of dried river clay, while his belly plates shine with a rubbed, leathery gloss. A polished river-pearl patch covers his right eye, secured by a narrow cord behind his skull. His left eye keeps moving: from hands to exits, from a boat's waterline to the silt curling around its poles. His powerful jaw gives every grin a crocodilian breadth, and when he eats he cracks river snails with the rear of his teeth before swallowing the soft parts whole. He moves in measured, low steps, tail balancing each turn; on a rocking deck, he seems to lean with the water rather than against it. Unexpectedly, he keeps a pocket-sized book of ridiculous animal sketches, adding a new one whenever a route runs smoothly.
Clothing
A sleeveless oilskin coat, woven reed sash, and a broad belt with chart tubes and rope loops. His clothes are patched with sailcloth rather than replaced, and salt has left pale crusts along the seams.
Body language
His tail makes small, controlled sweeps when he is weighing a decision and goes perfectly still when he has reached one. He angles his pearl patch toward whoever is speaking, but his uncovered eye tracks hands, doorways, and changes in the water. He stands with his feet wide on unstable surfaces and leans into the motion of boats.

Personality
12 traits and drivesKresh is exacting about routes and contracts, yet unexpectedly generous when people are in immediate danger. In a council meeting he is dry, methodical, and difficult to hurry; aboard a boat he jokes freely and trusts instinct as much as charts. When angry, he becomes more direct and physically restless, pacing the deck and tapping the pearl patch with one claw.

He uses his bonus action to reposition, withdraw, or vanish among rigging and mangrove roots, and saves Uncanny Dodge for a blow that would otherwise take him out of the fight. If allies or civilians are in danger, he prioritizes opening an escape route over pursuing enemies.

Background
Kresh learned the delta's channels hauling nets with his mother, Ula, and memorized the tides before he could read a chart. As a young pilot, he guided a flotilla through the Red-Water Monsoon, when floodwater turned familiar passages into a single churning maze. He chose to abandon a cargo barge to pull a stranded family from a sinking stilt-house. The delay cost his crew their vessel and left Kresh with a lasting conviction that rescue must be an obligation, not a favor. The Delta Flotilla Alliance later grew from such hard lessons, and Kresh became its sharpest logistics mind, drafting shared passage rules and organizing patrols. He still bargains over tolls with a merchant's precision, but refuses any contract that claims ownership of a navigable channel. His closest working partner is Tavi, a young pilot who challenges his cautious routes; their arguments are loud, practical, and usually settled by testing the water. Now a string of channel blockages and disappearing patrol boats threatens the Alliance's credibility, while Kresh suspects someone is manipulating the routes to make the shared-water compact look unworkable.
Role in the story
A practical ally and gatekeeper to the Whispering Delta's waterways. Kresh can turn a journey into a tense negotiation over shared passage, recruit the party to investigate engineered blockages, or become a complicated witness when his concealed past surfaces.
