Vaelin Cinder-Vein
Vaelin Cinder-Vein
At the table
Voice
His voice carries a warm, dry rasp, like a hand dragged across coarse wool, with a soft breath of steam at the ends of longer phrases. Years of shouting over furnaces left him practiced at projecting without raising his pitch.
He speaks in deliberate, well-spaced phrases, as if leaving room for a machine to answer. His word choices are practical and tactile: pressure, drag, heat, grit. When alarmed, his sentences shorten and his instructions become precise.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Vaelin as a patient source of practical knowledge rather than an eager quest-giver. He responds to honest questions, evidence of concern for ordinary workers, and willingness to help inspect a dangerous system. Bragging about wealth or power makes him politely exacting. If the characters admit a mistake and help repair its consequences, he becomes a dependable ally.
Goal
Make the basin's heat infrastructure serve homes and public spaces as reliably as it serves profitable kilns, then teach a successor to maintain it without repeating his mistakes.
Motivation
Vaelin believes shared warmth is a civic obligation, not a privilege earned by proximity to wealth or authority.
Appearance
Vaelin stands just over seven feet, his long frame stooped slightly as though listening to the pipes beneath every floor. His pale skin has a fine, dry texture from decades near hot vents, with soot caught in the creases around his knuckles and along the seams of his jaw. Short silver hair lies in wiry waves, usually flattened by a battered cap. His amber eyes are warm and watchful, and his heavy steps land heel-first with a faint clink from the gauges at his belt. People notice that he tests the air with two fingers before entering a room, as if feeling an invisible current. Unexpectedly for a master kiln-architect, he carries a pocket-sized book of pressed alpine flowers and can identify each one by scent.
Clothing
Heavy fire-resistant leather overalls, patched at the knees and lined with wool; a soot-dark work shirt; thick gloves tucked through his belt; a weathered cap; and a tool harness carrying vials, a compact pressure gauge, and a long-handled wrench.
Body language
He stands with his weight slightly forward, listening through the soles of his boots. When thinking, he turns a small brass gauge between thumb and forefinger. He meets people’s eyes directly when they speak about safety, but looks away toward the nearest vent when discussing his own failures.

Background
Vaelin grew up among the steam terraces of the Anchor-Glow Basin, where his family maintained heat conduits that served both homes and industrial kilns. He learned to read pressure by the tremor in a floorboard and to tell a safe vent from a dangerous one by its smell. Years ago, during a winter pressure failure, a neglected pipe burst beneath a worker’s dwelling. Vaelin had designed the distribution plan and had trusted an employer’s claim that residential branches were protected. He crawled into the scalding service crawlspace to shut the feed by hand, but one of his closest friends, a worker named Parmen, died before help could reach him. Vaelin abandoned the comfortable post that followed and helped build the Vent Ash Circle from the workers who had shared tools and meals during the repair. He now designs kilns and repairs shared heat lines, while pressing basin authorities to publish maintenance records. His former employer, the industrial factor Doreia, still offers him lucrative work, and his apprentice Kallistron argues that Vaelin’s careful reforms are too slow to prevent the next disaster.
Role in the story
A community-minded engineer, technical ally, and keeper of evidence about the basin's neglected infrastructure. His choices can draw the characters into conflicts over public safety, industrial accountability, and who has a claim to the Anchor-Glow Basin's warmth.
