Ivo Daran
Ivo Daran
At the table
Voice
A weather-roughened voice with a dry rasp, like rope sliding over a salt-stiff pulley. Years of calling orders over machinery have given it a carrying, forward-thrown sound. He speaks in short bursts when working, but can become unexpectedly animated when describing an uncharted reef or a clever mechanism.
His speech is economical and full of working measurements, shaped by years of shouting over pumps, wind, and rigging. He clips the ends off routine instructions but explains a repair with unexpected patience. Under stress, his words become precise and impersonal, as if he is reading from a damage report. In a rage, he stops explaining and gives short, forceful commands.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him with a practical problem, a clear plan, or proof that someone is being oppressed. He distrusts grand declarations and tests people by asking what they will do for those who cannot repay them. A sincere apology or offer of rescue unsettles him more than a threat. Do not expect him to discuss his family easily, but he may trust people who help his crew without demanding loyalty in return.
Goal
Break the Basings fleet's practice of seizing island vessels and pressing their crews into service, while finding the officer who ordered his family and shipmates killed.
Motivation
He wants to make the sea a route to freedom rather than an imperial road, but cannot always separate that cause from his need to punish the people who took his family.
Appearance
Ivo looks as if the sea has repeatedly tried to take him and been forced to settle for his coat. He waits with his weight on the balls of his feet, heels barely touching the deck, as if feeling for a change in the ship's balance. When he moves, he takes short, exact steps and turns his whole body toward a sound instead of just his head. His blue coat is stiff with salt at the seams, and his cuffs are dark with oil. A brass instrument lens hangs at his throat; one lens has been replaced by a tiny polished shell. He is often mistaken for a man holding himself under perfect control until a ship begins to founder, when his movements become swift and frighteningly heedless.
Clothing
A long, salt-stiff blue sea coat over a patched waistcoat, dark trousers tucked into tarred boots, and a faded blue neckerchief. His belt carries measuring calipers, a folding wrench, chalk, and the leather case for his spellcasting tools.
Body language
He stands forward on his feet, hands usually busy with a tool, a compass, or the edge of his coat. His gaze goes first to exits, rigging, and the nearest person who looks trapped. When anger takes him, his jaw locks and his body pitches toward the target as if the deck itself has tilted.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesIvo performs stern confidence because he believes a captain's doubt can spread faster than fire. In ordinary company he is patient, almost fussy, and delights in a clever repair or an uncharted inlet. When a plan goes wrong, he becomes blunt and tightly controlled. When a ship sinks or someone is trapped below deck, that control can snap into a furious, single-minded attack. Once the danger passes, remorse makes him meticulous about rescue and repair, and he struggles to accept comfort.
- Alignment
- Chaotic good, though he insists that judgment is a tool of empires and has no authority over him.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 52 · 30 ft.Ivo fights from cover, using his mobility to keep a clear line for spells and to stay near Sump. He opens with Faerie Fire or Web when it can divide a boarding party, then uses his scimitar and Shocking Grasp while Sump threatens enemies who close on him. He uses Shield to turn aside a dangerous hit and Flash of Genius to rescue a crewmate from a critical failure. If an enemy vessel is already sinking, memories of the mutiny can overtake his caution; afterward, he will abandon pursuit to pull survivors from the water.

Background
Ivo Daran grew up repairing tide gauges and hull pumps in Basings, where his mother, Eeva, kept a small salvage shop. He learned to calculate currents before he learned to read well. His first great invention was a pressure bell that let divers work deeper among the reefs. The royal survey ship Regent's Measure seized his design, then used it to recover a wreck full of unpaid island taxes and weapons for an occupation fleet. Ivo signed on as the fleet's engineer, telling himself he could limit the harm. During a storm, his crew mutinied against the officers and tried to surrender the ship to the island rebels. The officers retaliated. Ivo's wife, Anja, and their young son, Jori, were killed in the fighting, along with most of the crew he had grown up with. In the chaos, Ivo set the pressure bell's safety valves wrong and sank the ship. He survived with a handful of sailors, but the wreck became his private proof that cleverness could be as lethal as a blade. Now he captains the salvage sloop Sump, named after the flooded excavation where its hull was found. His crew raids imperial transports, frees pressed sailors, and dives the wrecks left by the Basings fleet. Ivo's old friend, Tamas, a former shipmate now working as a royal harbor inspector, tracks him through the islands. Ivo wants to stop the empire's coastal seizures, but he also keeps hunting for the surviving officer who ordered the mutiny's executions. He fears that revenge has become the only thing he is still good at.
Role in the story
A volatile ally, rival, or quest-giver whose salvage raids bring the party into conflict with Basings authorities. He can offer hard-won nautical expertise and access to wrecks, but his private vengeance may put his crew and the party at risk.
“He learned to calculate currents before he learned to read well.”
- Faction
- Captain of the Sump's independent crew, a loose company of anti-imperial salvagers and escaped sailors. The crew calls its warning buoy line 'Mind the Shoals,' a name nobody dares change. It is not a formal kingdom or navy faction.
