Keti Gethain
Keti Gethain
At the table
Voice
A clear contralto with a lively edge, like a song heard through an open window. Her laughter begins as a low snort that she tries and fails to disguise.
Her normal speech is bright, quick, and rhythmically precise. She often gives important statements a slight upward musical inflection, making them sound like invitations rather than claims. When genuinely frightened, her voice drops into a near-whisper and her breath catches in three ascending notes.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Keti begins as charming, observant, and lightly evasive. She offers useful small favors before asking personal questions. Players who protect vulnerable people earn her directness. Players who bully or exploit others receive polished misinformation and a smile that never reaches her eyes.
Goal
Find the missing members of the Ashen Chord before the magistrate captures them, then learn who is using her old songs to ignite a rebellion.
Motivation
Keti wants to repair the harm caused by her old lie without pretending that good intentions erase consequences.
Appearance
Keti is slim and athletic, with a narrow waist, long balanced limbs, and the poised stillness of someone accustomed to performing on unstable rooftops. Her light skin has a warm ivory tone, softened by freckles scattered across her shoulders like spilled poppy seeds. Her face is charming rather than flawless, with soft cheeks, a small squared chin, and large dark eyes that seem almost liquid in bright light. Her most immediately noticeable feature is her mouth: two slightly prominent upper incisors give her smile a foxlike edge, and when she laughs she presses her tongue against one tooth as though checking it is still there. She breathes quietly through her nose when calm, but when frightened her breath catches in three tiny ascending notes, like a bird trying to imitate a flute. Her movements are elegant and economical, yet she has an unexpectedly clumsy habit of bumping her hip against doorframes when distracted. The contradiction is striking: she looks delicate and inviting, but carries herself with the watchful readiness of a cornered stray cat.
Clothing
A cropped rust-red wrap top leaves her shoulders and stomach bare, secured by overlapping bands of charcoal linen rather than metal fastenings. A high-waisted teal skirt splits at the sides for movement, revealing fitted dark trousers beneath. Her clothing is elegant but repeatedly mended, with contrasting thread at the seams. She wears no visible jewelry, though a thin red cord is tied around her left wrist.
Body language
Keti stands upright with her shoulders relaxed and her weight slightly forward, as if prepared to step into a dance. She keeps her hands open when she wants trust and folds one thumb into her palm when she is concealing fear. When rattled, her breathing becomes visibly measured, her jaw tightens, and the three-note catch in her breath gives away what her expression does not.

Distinguishing features
Personality
18 traits and drivesKeti is generous toward frightened strangers but suspicious of anyone who offers kindness without a cost. In public she is playful, graceful, and quick to make herself seem harmless. With close friends she becomes controlling, quietly arranging their lives to prevent dangers they never asked her to solve. When confident, she teases like an affectionate sibling. When ashamed, she becomes precise and distant, speaking as though every sentence might later be used as evidence. Her deepest contradiction is that she longs to be trusted while constantly testing whether people deserve to trust her.

Background
Keti grew up in the crowded canal district of Gath Koru, the second daughter of a locksmith mother and a father who repaired ceremonial drums. She learned early that people confessed more readily to a girl carrying a song than to anyone carrying a question. At fifteen, she joined a traveling troupe whose leader used coded verses to move messages for dockworkers resisting a corrupt harbor magistrate. Keti believed the work was harmless until the magistrate discovered the cipher and arrested her father as the supposed organizer. To save him, Keti performed a false confession in the public square, naming three innocent people instead. Her father was released, but the three were imprisoned and one died before Keti could expose the lie. That failure changed her permanently. She abandoned the troupe, spent two years learning how officials, smugglers, and priests hide information, and now works as a singer, courier, and discreet finder of missing people. Her father refuses to speak of the old resistance. Her mother knows the truth and quietly sends Keti money whenever she can. Keti's current problem is that the harbor magistrate has begun hunting the surviving members of the troupe, while someone is using Keti's old coded songs to coordinate a new rebellion without her consent.
