Richard Jones
Richard Jones
At the table
Voice
His voice is shaped by cold walks, cheap indoor heating, and a habit of speaking while watching the weather. Richard's consonants are crisp and his sentences often end in a practical question. When the spirit presses close, a faint airy rasp rides beneath his words, like wind scraping across a narrow opening; it does not become louder, only more certain.
Richard's voice carries the dry rasp of someone accustomed to cold air and long walks, with a slight catch from habitual throat-clearing. His ordinary speech is quick, contemporary, and edged with dry humor. The spirit's words arrive in the same throat but with a harsher, breath-frayed cadence, as if the wind has found a narrow gap between his teeth.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet direct questions with direct answers if the question concerns immediate safety. He is guarded about his origin but can be reached through concern for the orphanage or through evidence that complicates the spirit's certainty. Do not treat him as a mere vessel: Richard is frightened, responsible, and capable of changing the bargain's meaning.
Goal
Find the truth about his blood father and the crimes the spirit remembers, while keeping enough control to decide for himself what justice means.
Motivation
The spirit wants restitution for old harm and believes vengeance is the only language powerful people heed. Richard wants the truth, a life of his own, and a way to protect the people who raised him.
Appearance
A lean young man with wind-chapped pallor and brown hair that will not lie flat, even when damp. His pale yellow eyes have a raptor's fixed, measuring focus; in bright light, the pupils seem to contract too sharply. He moves with a forward tilt, as if balancing on an invisible current, then goes unnaturally still before turning his head in one quick, birdlike motion. His hands are roughened by bowstring and travel, with blunt, split nails and small calluses across the fingers. He smells faintly of wet feathers, cold iron, and ozone, a scent he notices only when someone else recoils. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny paper crane tucked behind one ear, folded by a child at the orphanage.
Clothing
A faded weatherproof jacket over thrifted layers, dark work trousers, worn boots, and a knitted cap he keeps pulling off to feel the wind. A phone with a cracked case and a cheap transit card mark him as very much of the present day.
Body language
At ease, he leans into doorframes and rolls his shoulders as if testing the wind. Under pressure, he becomes rigid through the spine, fixes his gaze on one point, and barely blinks. When the spirit presses forward, his fingers spread and curl like talons, though his expression remains Richard's.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesRichard is compassionate in practical, almost stubborn ways, yet emotionally evasive when anyone offers him the same care. He can be patient with frightened children and abruptly severe with people he thinks are making excuses. In a calm mood he jokes dryly and listens closely; when the spirit stirs, he becomes solemn, old-fashioned, and convinced that delay is complicity. He hates being treated as a weapon, but sometimes welcomes the clarity of having a target.

AC 14 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Keeps distance with bow and gusts, uses gust of wind or thunderwave to break a group apart, and closes with the spear only when an ally is threatened. Background
Before the spirit's bargain, Richard Jones was a fair-haired, blue-eyed boy born to a family with roots across the sea in Scandinavia. He died young, far from the family that might have claimed him. An ancient eagle spirit, left without a home after the collapse and displacement of the eastern peoples whose lands it had known, found him at the edge of death. The spirit offered life in exchange for Richard's blue eyes, taking them as the price of sight and a place inside the boy. Richard woke with pale yellow eyes and a second presence behind his thoughts. He grew up in an orphanage, where caretaker Nessa Shiel taught him to repair broken windows and never promise what he could not give. A younger resident, Tomi, still sends him messages he is too ashamed to answer. As adulthood approaches, the spirit's memories and impulses are surfacing more often: Richard watches skies instead of friends, speaks of old wrongs, and feels cold in his heart and nerves that crackle like lightning. The spirit insists Richard's blood father must die, even if the trail leads to Scandinavia, and demands justice for crimes against the land from Alaska to Florida. Richard has left the orphanage bitterly, but keeps the paper crane from one of its children. He does not yet know whether the hunt is his calling, the spirit's revenge, or both.
Role in the story
A hunted young man and potential ally whose internal bargain turns a quest for justice into a question of consent, memory, and vengeance. His search can lead the party across modern North America and eventually toward Scandinavia, while evidence may challenge the spirit's account.
“He died young, far from the family that might have claimed him.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. The spirit remembers the lands and peoples it once knew, but does not claim to speak for any living nation or community.
