Hadi
Hadi
At the table
Voice
Hadi's voice has a warm, grainy rasp from years of calling orders across a crowded room and speaking over river wind. It carries easily without becoming a shout. When amused, a brief breathy chuckle catches at the end of his sentences; when upset, his words become clipped and unmistakably clear.
He speaks in plain, well-paced phrases, with the practical vocabulary of ferry landings, kitchens, and weather. He often begins advice with a concrete observation about the room, and lets humor soften a difficult truth without dodging it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Hadi as an observant host who offers small kindnesses before asking questions. He will help characters who respect his staff and guests, but he dislikes being pressed for private information in a crowded room. Earn his trust by keeping a confidence or lending practical help rather than making a dramatic pledge.
Goal
Repair the tavern's undermined river wall before the next spring flood and keep the building in his family without putting his staff or guests at risk.
Motivation
Hadi wants The Painted Bend to remain a safe, ordinary place where travelers can rest without having to explain themselves. He also wants the people around him to ask for help before a crisis becomes a flood.
Appearance
Hadi has a broad, weathered face, a neat dark moustache, and a habit of leaning his weight onto the balls of his feet as though the floor might shift beneath him. When waiting, he keeps one heel lightly raised and rolls it down only when someone has finished speaking. He moves with the economical certainty of someone who has carried too many full trays through crowded rooms. His palms are callused, his nails clean, and the right cuff of his shirt is always faintly dusted with flour. The unexpected detail is a tiny sprig of fresh mint tucked behind one ear, replaced each morning from the planter by the back door.
Clothing
A russet work shirt with sleeves rolled unevenly, a dark green waistcoat patched at the elbows, a flour-marked apron, and sturdy boots whose soles are worn smooth at the toes
Body language
He plants one foot slightly ahead of the other and keeps his weight forward, ready to catch a slipping tray or intercept a falling patron. While listening, he rubs the seam of his apron with his thumb. When uncomfortable, he tidies objects that do not need tidying, aligning cups by their handles.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesHadi is welcoming but not gullible, and his generosity has a practical edge: he will feed a stranger gladly, then ask what they intend to do tomorrow. In a busy room he is wry and quick, making the staff laugh as he works; alone with someone frightened, he becomes patient and listens without filling every silence. When angry, he grows direct and brisk, naming the harm and what must stop rather than dressing it up as a joke.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Hadi is not a trained combatant. He tries to calm the room, move bystanders toward the rear exit, and place the bar or a table between himself and danger. If cornered, he uses his mallet or a thrown cup to create an opening, then retreats and calls for help.

Possessions
Background
Hadi inherited The Painted Bend from his aunt, who had bought the building after a flood left it leaning against the river road. As a young man, he worked the ferry landing and learned that travelers tell the truth more readily when they are tired, warm, and allowed to choose their own table. Years ago, during a winter flood, he opened the tavern's upper floor to families stranded on the road. When the water rose through the ground floor, Hadi led people across a roof beam to the old mill. One guest, a frightened child named Ayo, refused to leave a tin toy boat behind; Hadi went back for it and nearly drowned. The experience made him generous with shelter but deeply wary of promises made in a crisis. Ayo now works as a courier and visits when passing through. Hadi is also in a tense business arrangement with Temba, the miller, whose grain deliveries have grown irregular, and quietly worries that the riverbank is undercutting the tavern's foundation.
Role in the story
A grounded, well-connected refuge and source of local knowledge. Hadi can become a dependable ally, but the precarious riverbank and his unresolved suspicions about the flood may draw the characters into trouble.
