Teskara
Teskara
At the table
Voice
A clear, dry-edged voice shaped by years of calling warnings across stone galleries and by the breath control of a balance-trained guard. Before she speaks there is a small nasal intake and a beat of stillness. Her words carry a faint reed-quarter lilt; in public they are clipped and exact, while private jokes arrive with a sudden rasp of warmth.
Her speech has the clipped clarity of someone trained to give commands over clattering armor and echoing corridors. Consonants land cleanly; vowels carry a slight reed-quarter lilt from childhood. She pauses for one measured nasal breath before speaking to strangers. On duty her sentences are concise and formally arranged; with children and servants, she gives plain directions with a dry edge of humor. When angry, she becomes faster and more exact, naming people and actions rather than raising her voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Teskara as a person rather than a possession or palace ornament. She responds to clear choices, practical help, and respect for other servants. Do not assume that a promise of rescue is safe; she will test whether the speaker understands who else may be endangered. If approached with an official order, she asks who issued it and whom it protects. If offered a credible route to change the levy system, she may risk sharing what she knows.
Goal
Find a way to free herself and the other debt-servants without exposing her mother or leaving Kijani to bear the consequences.
Motivation
Teskara wants to make protection mean something other than keeping powerful people comfortable. She is torn between the safety of small, quiet acts and the moral urgency of exposing a system that keeps taking people.
Appearance
A tall draconic woman stands beside a narrow palace rail in a dancer's poised, spring-loaded balance, one heel lifted as if the next breath might become a leap. Angled daylight catches the warm bronze of her skin and the fine copper scales stippling her cheekbones, forearms, and neck; her narrow snout ends in a pale-gold tip, and her swept-back polished horns are nicked at their edges. Copper-red hair is tied high with green silk, its loose wisps trembling in the mountain draft. Her sad amber eyes angle downward, chin lowered, but her posture is alert rather than defeated. Emerald velvet courtwear lies beneath a ruby-set, thin silk top, with a sheer loincloth sash shifting at her hip; blue-green tattoos curl down one arm like a winding river map. Dust marks her bare clawed feet. Chipped gold nail caps and ruby anklets flash above ornate iron calf guards, while a thick, worn chain trails over the polished stone to an attendant crouched at the lower edge of the scene, fitting its locking clasp. Her scaled tail curls around the rail, counterbalancing her stance. The unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully mended patch of bright yellow quilting sewn inside one velvet cuff, visible only when she moves her hand. Japanese-inspired palace architecture frames distant high mountains; suspended dust, warm light, and long diagonal shadows set a muted bronze, emerald, iron, and amber palette.
Clothing
Emerald velvet courtwear beneath a ruby-set thin silk top, a translucent silk loincloth sash, blue-green tattoos curling down one arm, ruby anklets, chipped gold claw caps, and ornate iron calf guards. Her uniform is elegant by palace standards but scuffed and dust-marked from guard work. A bright yellow quilted patch is hand-stitched inside one cuff.
Body language
She holds her shoulders square and her chin low when observed by officials, but her tail gives away her attention, tightening around a rail or turning toward a speaker. In conversation with servants, she angles her body to leave them a clear path out. When angered, she plants both feet and grips the chain until its links stop moving; she does not look away.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesTeskara is disciplined enough to make a command sound like a fact, yet humane enough to disobey when following it would hurt someone needlessly. In public she is watchful and composed, measuring each word; among servants she is unexpectedly dryly funny and generous with small practical comforts. Under pressure she becomes brisk and directive, while in solitude she can linger over choices until dawn, afraid that every route to freedom will cost somebody else.
- Alignment
- Lawful, with a growing conviction that obedience and justice are not the same thing.

HP 52 · 30 feet per round in the custom framework; chain drag does not reduce movement on clear ground, but tight spaces may snag it at the GM's discretion.Teskara holds a narrow approach rather than charging into a crowd. She uses the chain to disrupt footing, separate an aggressor from a protected person, and create a gap for retreat. She draws her saber only when an opponent presses past a warning or threatens someone under her protection. She avoids killing when a disarm or knockdown will do, but is decisive against a threat she cannot contain.

Equipment
- Palace restraint chain (custom restraint and control tool)Heavy iron chain with broad, hand-forged links. The outer edges are polished by constant dragging, while the inner faces hold dark oil and grit. A binding clasp attaches it to her calf guards; it is a restraint, not a magical command device.
- Eastern gallery saber (weapon)A curved, single-edged saber with a dark leather grip, plain guard, and a shallow nick near the tip. Maintained for service, not ceremony.
- Iron calf guards (armor)Layered iron calf guards, protective but heavy, with worn leather straps and small ruby-red fittings matching her court uniform.
- Mending kit (personal item)A small folded scrap of yellow quilting, spare thread, and a bone needle hidden in her sash.

Background
Teskara was hatched among the reed-roofed homes below Mount Kogane, where her mother, Ndagu, repaired fishing nets and taught her to read currents by the way floating seeds turned. At thirteen, a palace levy took her as a debt-servant after her village could not meet a winter grain tax. She was trained as a guard because her balance, reach, and quick reflexes made her useful on the palace's high bridges. Her first years were spent carrying keys and standing outside doors, not choosing whom they protected. The turning point came during the Ash-Moth fire, when a panicked crowd surged through a palace gate. Teskara was ordered to hold the gate shut. She disobeyed, used her chain to drag a trapped child clear, and helped open an escape route. The child survived, but the household blamed her for letting several servants flee. Since then, she has tried to protect people without pretending the palace's rules are fair. Her current post guards the eastern audience gallery and its narrow rail, where she is watched by the palace's chain attendant. She exchanges scraps of news with her mother through a kitchen courier and has quietly taught the younger page Kijani how to recognize a false order. Her immediate problem is that the old binding clasp is cracking; the court intends to replace it with a more restrictive model before the spring procession. Teskara has begun mapping an escape route through the rain cisterns, though she has not decided whether to flee alone, free the other debt-servants, or risk exposing the palace's levy records.
Role in the story
A skilled palace guard whose position gives her access to restricted halls and a direct view of the court's abuses. She can become a cautious ally, a complicated rescue target, or the spark for a wider challenge to debt-servitude. Her choices should remain her own; freeing her is not the same as deciding her future for her.

- Faction
- Attached to the Eastern Gallery Guard by palace decree; legally held as a debt-servant by the court household. She has no voluntary allegiance to the levy system.
