At the table
Voice
Her voice has a dry, breath-catching rasp from dust, altitude, and long hours speaking over stone echoes. It carries a quick, percussive rhythm, as if every sentence is being fitted between knocks. When she names herself, the syllables come clipped and blunt; when she recites a recorded pattern, she articulates each beat with deliberate care.
Ysmay speaks at a fast, uneven pace, with clauses crowding one another as she tries to preserve every qualification. She often cuts herself off to apologize or replace a word with a more precise one. Her breath catches when she is anxious, but certainty brings a sharp, clean edge to her phrasing.

How to play them
Give Ysmay a concrete question and time to consult her notebook. She is candid when asked what she observed, but distinguishes observation from interpretation with painstaking care. Showing that a record has been altered earns her attention; demanding that she endorse a conclusion before the evidence is clear makes her retreat behind procedure. If treated with patience, she volunteers the private rhythm notes she has kept from the official record.
Goal
Determine what the new knocking rhythm means, preserve an honest record, and prevent either faction from acting on evidence they do not actually possess.
Motivation
Ysmay wants the truth preserved with its uncertainties intact. She wants the Keepers to remain capable of listening to one another, and hopes to make one important decision without letting fear write the record for her.
Appearance
Ysmay looks as if she has been caught in the middle of taking notes and never quite found her way back out. Ink shadows the creases of her palms and the cuffs of her robe; fine grit clings to the damp sheen of her temples. Her movements are quick, with small abrupt pauses as she listens through her soles, then resumes at a near trot. She checks the brass clasp of her notebook so often that its edge has polished a bright track through the grime. The unexpected detail is a tiny painted procession of beetles along the hem of her formal envoy's robe, each one carefully given a different hat.
Clothing
Practical leather armor beneath layered envoy robes in muted clay and slate tones. The sleeves are ink-smeared, the hems dusted with grit, and the beetle procession embroidered near the lower edge is bright enough to catch the eye.
Body language
Her shoulders lean forward as though trying to get closer to a faint sound. Her fingers keep finding the notebook clasp, and when she is concentrating she plants both feet firmly and stops fidgeting. Under pressure she gestures with her stylus in quick little strokes, sometimes marking invisible beats in the air.

Personality
13 traits and drivesYsmay is eager to help and suspicious of easy certainty. She fills silence with explanations when anxious, yet can hold her ground when someone dismisses evidence she has personally checked. In safe company she is curious and unexpectedly funny; under factional pressure she becomes procedural, then privately furious with herself for not speaking plainly sooner.

She uses shatter only when several enemies or a vulnerable structure are caught in its area. If a companion is badly threatened, she spends her reaction to interfere with an attack and draws attention away from them.

Background
Ysmay was raised among the Hush-Rock Keepers, where careful listening was treated as a duty rather than a gift. As a junior recorder, she once transcribed a sequence of knocks beneath the village catacombs and presented it to her superiors. Elder Kavra urged her to keep measuring; Kjorn, a hardliner within the order, insisted the pattern was too dangerous to circulate. Ysmay was sent as the Keepers' envoy on the descent, officially to document the evidence and carry their position. In 1398 TF, the knocking changed rhythm while she was alone at a survey station. She heard what sounded like a second pattern answering from deeper stone, then watched the instrument needle settle on a reading she could not explain. Since then she has copied every sound twice, once for the official record and once in a private notebook. She respects the Keepers and depends on their protection, but fears that Kjorn will use her observations to justify opening the seal. She is also trying to repair the trust of her former field partner, who believes her hesitation cost the party a chance to warn a nearby camp.
Role in the story
Ysmay is an anxious but principled Keeper envoy whose notes may help the party understand the disturbances beneath Hush-Rock Hollow and the Ring. She offers a human point of contact inside a divided order and can become an important witness when competing factions make claims about the evidence.

- Faction
- Official envoy of the Hush-Rock Keepers; personally wary of Kjorn's hardliner faction and loyal to Elder Kavra's insistence on honest measurements.
