The Realist
The Realist
At the table
Voice
A dry, road-worn rasp with a clear carrying edge, like a sergeant accustomed to shouting over wind and wagon wheels. Before speaking he takes a measured nasal breath. His laugh bursts out with surprising volume, and his anger makes his consonants sharper and his sentences shorter rather than softer.
His voice has a dry rasp from years of calling orders across wind and wagon noise. He starts phrases with a small intake through his nose, as though measuring breath against the length of what he intends to say. His words are clipped but not cold, shaped by a lifetime of giving instructions that must be understood the first time. His laugh is sudden, broad, and louder than his ordinary speech.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He responds best to specific plans, honest limits, and people who admit what they do not know. He will test boasts with practical questions, but gives respect to anyone who takes responsibility for a mistake. To earn his trust, ask what an action will cost and then accept the answer.
Goal
Help rebuild the old ford and settle the conflict between his former commander and the hamlet without allowing either side to turn it into a new military foothold.
Motivation
To make sure the people around him have a real chance to survive, even if they never thank him for spoiling a comforting story.
Appearance
The Realist has a square, weather-browned face and a jaw that shifts visibly to one side when he chews, the result of a childhood habit of cracking hard seeds with his teeth. His broad front teeth show whenever he laughs, which he does suddenly and without warning, like a door thrown open. His dark hair is cut close with a strip left longer at the crown, always flattened by a dented helmet. He moves with economical, measured steps, turning his whole body to face whoever speaks rather than craning his neck. His hands are callused and permanently smell faintly of oiled leather and dried fennel. Unexpectedly, he carries a tiny painted wooden bird on his belt and dusts it carefully before every meal.
Clothing
A patched, dark-green gambeson under a well-maintained breastplate, with a weatherproof brown cloak, riding trousers, practical boots, and a dented kettle helm. His belt carries a small painted bird on a cord.
Body language
He plants both feet before disagreeing, taps two fingers against his belt while calculating, and turns his torso squarely toward whoever has the floor. When embarrassed, he brushes dust from the little wooden bird. Before a fight, he tests his sword grip and checks the nearest retreat route.

Background
The Realist was born Meskir in a hamlet beside a narrow ford, where his mother kept the ferry and his father repaired mill wheels. At seventeen he joined a border levy, convinced that courage and a strong arm could solve most troubles. During his first winter campaign, his captain ordered a night march across a frozen marsh. Meskir argued that the ice would not hold, but followed the order; the column broke through, and his younger brother drowned while Meskir dragged three strangers to safety. That failure changed him. He stopped treating optimism as a plan and began weighing food, weather, exits, and the cost of every promise. He became a dependable sergeant, then left service when a lord ordered him to burn a village suspected of harboring raiders. Now he escorts caravans and advises small communities on defense. He sends most of his pay to his widowed mother and keeps trying to reconcile with his former captain, who still believes the massacre would have prevented a war. His old companion Nima, a traveling chirurgeon, thinks he mistakes caution for wisdom and keeps inviting him to help rebuild the ford he once abandoned.
