Grand Archon Ygg-Vael
Grand Archon Ygg-Vael
At the table
Voice
A cavern-deep resonance created by vibrating roots and crystal, with a tactile bass that travels through the ground. Their delivery is deliberate and textured, like a low wind passing through timber; anger makes the rhythm more abrupt and the words more forceful, not softer.
Their voice is produced by the resonance of wood, stone, and crystal, deep enough to stir dust from the cavern roof. Every word carries a faint vibration through the floor. They speak in measured clauses, using concrete images of roots, water, and pressure; when their emotions break through, their consonants strike like branches knocking together in a high wind.

How to play them
Ygg-Vael receives visitors in a broad cavern where the roots are exposed and the floor carries the Nexus's pulse. They ask what the visitors have seen, what they assume, and who may be harmed by their proposed solution. They offer guidance and access to safe root-paths to those who share evidence and accept accountability. They resist demands for unquestioned authority, and they will not declare a community's claim legitimate without hearing its people.
Goal
Identify the cause of the new pressure in the Verdant Heart Nexus without repeating the harm caused by the watershed severing.
Motivation
To protect Verdara's living root-network while ensuring that stewardship remains a responsibility shared with communities, not a claim to rule them.
Appearance
Ygg-Vael stands nearly twenty feet tall, a broad-shouldered figure assembled from braided ironwood roots, some smooth as river-polished stone and others ridged with fossil-hard bark. Their weight settles into the cavern floor with the slow certainty of a tree taking hold. A crown of translucent crystal leaves unfurls above their head, each one glowing and dimming in a pulse that can be felt through the soles before it is seen. Pale spores drift from their joints like dust in lamplight, carrying the smell of wet earth and sharp mineral rain. They take up so much room that people instinctively step aside, and Ygg-Vael seems only dimly aware of the space they claim. A little brass wind-up bird, its paint worn to bare metal on the beak, is tucked into a hollow between two ribs, an unexpected keepsake among those ancient roots.
Clothing
No manufactured clothing. Living creepers and small, pale mosses drape their shoulders, while crystal leaves form a natural crown. The brass wind-up bird is lodged carefully between their ribs.
Body language
Their shoulders and root-crown shift with a slow, deliberate rhythm. When listening, they lower their head until the crystal leaves cast light across the speaker's face. Disapproval travels through their whole frame as a low creak and a faint vibration in the floor. They avoid sudden movement around fragile people, but their immense reach can still make a gesture feel like an approaching landslide.

Personality
12 traits and drivesYgg-Vael is patient enough to hear a frightened person repeat the same account three times, yet becomes startlingly decisive when a root-channel is in immediate danger. They feel other beings' distress through the network, but empathy does not always make their judgments gentle. In private, they are tender with small, breakable things; in council, they can sound like a verdict carved into stone. They want to share authority and still find it difficult to relinquish the final decision when the Nexus is at stake.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though they will accept harsh costs to protect Verdara's living systems.

AC 18 · HP 240 · 30 ft., climb 20 ft.Ygg-Vael first tries to separate intruders from the living root-channels and determine whether they are acting knowingly. They use control spells and terrain to restrict movement, then grapple or drive threats away from the Nexus. They avoid lethal force when an attacker can be restrained, disarmed, or persuaded to withdraw. If the ley-core itself is threatened, they stop negotiating and spend Legendary Resistance to preserve their ability to protect it.

Background
Ygg-Vael remembers the Verdant Heart Nexus before it had a name that could be spoken. They formed as an awakened aspect of the world-tree, then spent centuries acting as a witness and interpreter rather than a ruler. The Root-Sovereign Conclave began as a compact among distinct custodians; Ygg-Vael became its primary voice only after generations of communities asked them to read leyline tremors and settle disputes over safe routes. Their defining failure came during the watershed severing. To stop a spreading fissure from reaching the ley-core, they directed wardens to cut a root-channel that carried water to several settlements. The fissure was contained, but people were displaced and trust in the Conclave fractured. Since then, Ygg-Vael has tried to hear the needs of individual communities without pretending the whole network speaks with one will. They remain in contact with the Conclave's wardens and with arcanists who study the Nexus, while privately tending the tiny wind-up bird left by a child evacuated during the severing. Now the roots report a new, unfamiliar pressure: Ygg-Vael can sense disruption in the Nexus, but cannot reliably distinguish malicious siphoning from the pain of a damaged system trying to heal.
Role in the story
A powerful but fallible ally and political witness whose bond with the Nexus provides vital clues without making them omniscient. Their past decision can expose tensions within the Root-Sovereign Conclave and give the party a chance to help repair trust as well as investigate the current disturbance.
“They formed as an awakened aspect of the world-tree, then spent centuries acting as a witness and interpreter rather than a ruler.”
- Faction
- Primary voice of the Root-Sovereign Conclave, an ancestral stewardship council rather than a government over Verdara.
