Ghesha
Ghesha
At the table
Voice
Her voice has a dry, chest-resonant rasp, shaped by smoke, winter air, and long hours speaking across a busy communal room. Consonants land firmly; a breath catches at the end of a sentence when she is choosing not to claim more than she knows.
She speaks in compact, practical sentences, often grounding an abstract thought in some detail of firewood, weather, or food. She does not present divination as certainty, and will plainly say when she does not know.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer hospitality without rushing trust. Ask what the visitor has already noticed, then share practical history before interpreting signs. She is frank with respectful listeners and becomes guarded if anyone treats the bones as a toy or demands certainty.
Goal
Keep the ancestral bones and central hearth safe while helping Gargas interpret the bones without surrendering his own judgment.
Motivation
To preserve useful wisdom without letting tradition turn into unquestioned authority.
Appearance
Ghesha is a broad-shouldered orc woman with weather-burnished olive-brown skin, textured like old leather where years of smoke and winter wind have dried it. Her dark hair is shaved close at the temples and gathered into a thick, carefully braided crown threaded with tiny bone beads. She moves with the economical certainty of someone accustomed to tending a fire through a long night: no wasted steps, but a sudden, startling quickness when a coal rolls toward bare feet. Her unexpected adornment is a tiny, precise line of blue glass beads stitched along one sleeve, arranged to resemble a map of the winter stars. She smells faintly of juniper smoke, wool, and clean ash, and leaves the impression of warmth with a hard edge beneath it.
Clothing
Layered charcoal-gray wool, a smoke-brown apron, and a patched shoulder mantle secured with a horn clasp. Her cuffs are clean despite the soot around her hems. Tiny blue glass beads trace a star pattern along one sleeve.
Body language
She holds herself squarely and watches hands as carefully as faces. When weighing a difficult question, she rubs a bone bead between thumb and forefinger; when she has made up her mind, she plants both feet and becomes almost perfectly still.

Background
Ghesha was born to a line of Hearthkeepers, the elders entrusted with maintaining communal fires, preserving oral histories, and interpreting the charred bones of the dead. As a young woman, she treated divination as a comforting ritual rather than a source of truth. That changed during the hard winter when the settlement's old smokehouse collapsed. Ghesha had dreamed of a roof sagging under snow, but dismissed the omen as anxiety; two relatives died in the collapse. Since then, she has learned to take uncertainty seriously without pretending it is certainty. Generations of elders contributed the fire-blackened bones she gave to Gargas, each marked with runes and Orcish signs. She urged him to trust them, but more importantly to listen carefully and question what he thinks he hears. Ghesha remains close to her niece, Sella, a practical young healer who distrusts divination, and to Hareth, a retired charcoal burner who helped her rescue survivors from the smokehouse. Her current trouble is that the settlement's central hearth is dying, while a local headman wants to sell its ancient fuelwood rights to outsiders. Ghesha is quietly trying to discover whether the bones warn of a natural disaster, a political betrayal, or simply her own fear.
Role in the story
A grounded elder and custodian of a living tradition. Ghesha gives Gargas the ancestral bones and teaches him to approach their divination with attention rather than blind faith. Her fears and the crisis around the central hearth can draw the party into a conflict over memory, land, and the meaning of inherited warnings.
“As a young woman, she treated divination as a comforting ritual rather than a source of truth.”
