The Clipper Run
The Clipper Run
Read aloud
Captain Sera Venn slaps a sealed case onto the chart table as the Peregrine's crew scrambles to cast off. The Cutters are already raising sail behind you, and the harbor compact must reach Graywake before the winter fleet arrives. If the Cutters catch the Clipper, the coast's next season may be decided by whoever takes that case.

Objectives
- 11. Keep the Clipper ahead of the Cutters.
- 22. Get the Clipper through Lorn Reach.
- 33. Get the compact to its destination before the winter fleet arrives.
- 44. Decide what to do about the compact's concealed terms.Optional
The clock
The winter fleet reaches Graywake at dawn on the second day. Each major delay, failed passage, or extended confrontation reduces the party's time to deliver the compact or persuade the signatories to reconsider it.

The hook
Set the scene
The party is aboard the Peregrine just before departure. Captain Sera Venn explains the urgency, shows the sealed case, and assigns immediate tasks as the crew spots sails leaving the harbor behind them. Let the players decide who manages the helm, watches the pursuit, and speaks with the crew.
How Captain Sera Venn asks
Captain Sera Venn requests help aboard the Peregrine at the moment of departure.
She offers a clear objective and trusts the party with immediate shipboard responsibilities, but keeps the compact sealed unless the party earns her confidence or circumstances force disclosure.

2. Keep the Clipper ahead of the Cutters
Open water aboard the Peregrine, with the Cutter ship closing through rough seas.
Give the party a pressured choice between speed, crew safety, and resisting the boarding attempt while demonstrating that the Cutters will not simply fall behind.

Behind it
What people believe
The party is hired to escort the Peregrine and its sealed harbor compact to Graywake Anchorage before the winter fleet arrives.
Privateers known as the Cutters are pursuing the ship, and the party must protect the crew, navigate the dangerous Lorn Reach, and deliver the case on time. A stowaway named Mara Quill may complicate the mission with a claim about the compact.
Background
The Veyrun Coast survives on the Clipper Run, a chain of fast courier vessels carrying medicine, navigation charts, and treaty messages between isolated ports.
The swift cutter ship Peregrine has been chosen to carry a sealed harbor compact before the winter fleet arrives. The rival Cutters, a privateer band with local support, intend to seize the compact and sell its contents to the highest bidder.
The stakes
If the Clipper is stopped, the winter fleet may act on incomplete information or let the Cutters dictate the coastal alliance.
If the compact is delivered unchanged, Reedhome's residents may be displaced. If the party exposes or alters it, they may prevent that harm but fracture the coalition the coast needs.
Encounters
3Keep the Clipper ahead of the Cutters
Combat and vehicle pursuit
The Clipper's wet, pitching deck; narrow gangplanks between ships; rigging, cargo lashings, and a vulnerable helm. The sea is rough enough to make exposed movement hazardous.
Foes
Cutter boarding captain
Cutter deck fighters
Cutter signaler
ComplicationThe Cutters use grappling lines to pull the ships alongside one another. Each round or action cycle, the crew must choose between fighting boarders, cutting lines, protecting the helm, and keeping the Clipper on course. Use the d6 complications table when a dramatic complication is needed.
ScalingFor a smaller or less capable party, use fewer boarders and have the pursuing ship fall behind after one successful maneuver. For a larger or stronger party, add a second boarding wave or have a second Cutter ship join the pursuit. Keep the objective focused on preserving speed and control, not defeating every foe.
The Teeth of Lorn Reach
Skill and exploration
A narrow reef channel with shoals, broken stone spires, shifting currents, and a low tide that exposes hidden rocks.
Foes
Reefward current
False channel marker
ComplicationThe channel is marked by unreliable buoys, and a false marker has been moved. A wrong turn risks grounding the ship or losing the lead. The party can use navigation, local knowledge, observation, or a clever alternative to find the true passage.
ScalingFor a gentler challenge, provide a clear tell such as seabirds circling the true channel. For a tougher challenge, worsen visibility or make the markers difficult to distinguish while the Cutters close in.
Terms at Graywake Anchorage
Social
A sheltered anchorage beneath steep cliffs, with both vessels holding position in a narrow band of calm water and crew members watching from the rails.
Foes
Marshal Kestrel Vane
Cutter negotiator
ComplicationVane's crew offers a temporary truce and safe passage if the party gives up the case. The parley is time-limited, and the Cutters' ship keeps pace nearby. The party can negotiate, stall, expose a lie, or use the meeting to create an advantage.
ScalingFor a straightforward social scene, Vane's offer is plainly self-serving. For a more difficult scene, give Vane credible evidence that the compact's public promises will harm Mara's people, forcing the party to address the issue rather than simply reject the offer.

A signal lantern with coded shutters, custom equipment for communicating between ships
A sealed letter of passage accepted by several Veyrun Coast harbormasters
On a win
The Peregrine reaches Graywake with its crew intact and the compact still in the party's custody or under an agreed arrangement.
Success can mean simple delivery, a delayed ratification, or a public challenge to the annex. The party's choices determine whether the coastal ports gain a timely alliance, whether Reedhome is protected, and how much trust remains between the courier network and its allies.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot keep the Clipper ahead of the Cutters.
- The Clipper is captured or forced to surrender the compact. The party can escape, be taken prisoner, or negotiate from captivity, but the Cutters gain time to sell or alter the document.
- The party loses too much time at Lorn Reach or during the pursuit.
- The ship reaches port late, and the winter fleet begins operating under incomplete or false information. The compact may still be delivered, but the party must persuade the signatories to delay their decision.
- The party delivers the compact without investigating or addressing its concealed terms.
- The Clipper arrives safely but Mara's warning is ignored. The compact is ratified as written, displacing island families and creating a lasting grievance against the courier network.
Complications (d6)
- 1A snapped rigging line lashes across the deck; someone must secure it before it tears a sail or injures a crew member.
- 2A sudden fog bank separates the Clipper from its escort, and the navigator must identify the safe channel by sound, current, or landmark.
- 3A Cutter signal lantern flashes a false distress call from a reef-side skiff, tempting the crew to slow down.
- 4A water cask splits in the hold, soaking the powder and supplies stored beside it; the crew must choose what to salvage first.
- 5A frightened deckhand recognizes Ilyan as a former Cutter and accuses him of leading the pursuit to them.
- 6A floating net catches the rudder. Cutting it free costs time, while towing it risks drawing the Clipper toward rocks.
