The Road Beneath the Roots
The Road Beneath the Roots
Read aloud
Kaelen Thistledown spreads a water-stained map across the table and points to a road that should not exist. It has reappeared in the hills, and someone is already moving toward it with armed porters. Kaelen asks you to reach the old survey site first and bring back the brass lens that marks its true course.

The hook
Set the scene
Read aloud: Kaelen Thistledown smooths a damp map with both hands. A thin line of silver ink runs across its center, though the rest of the page is faded brown. 'This road was buried before I was born,' Kaelen says. 'It appeared again three nights ago. Orren Vask has already hired people to find it, and I cannot let him reach the old survey camp first.'
How Kaelen Thistledown asks
Kaelen requests a private meeting at a mapmaker's stall, brings a hand-drawn route map, and offers an advance for supplies.
They avoid questions about the previous expedition until confronted with evidence or asked directly.

1. The Map That Should Be Blank
Kaelen's cramped map stall in the settlement market, with rain tapping on a patched canvas roof.
Kaelen hires the party and gives them the map. A few questions establish what Kaelen will admit, while rumors or Mara's testimony can reveal that the earlier expedition ended in disaster.
NextMara Fen offers to guide the party to the hill trail, but warns them that the old markers cannot be trusted after sunset.

2. Where the Trail Doubles Back
A wooded hillside of mossy cairns, narrow ravines, and old boundary stones that shift position when unobserved.
The party follows the old route through terrain that contradicts the map. They can use observation, local knowledge, or experimentation to identify which marker stones are genuine.
NextThe true route leads to a stone causeway and the abandoned survey camp beyond it.

3. The Causeway Guard
The Glassroot Way, where pale roots grow through broken paving and old survey tools lie scattered among the stones.
The party crosses the causeway and searches the camp for the brass lens. The guardian tests whether they are intruders, while Orren's people may arrive during or after the confrontation.
The Overgrown CausewayNextA recovered lens or a trail of silver light points toward a sealed chamber beneath the route.

4. The Choice at the Heartstone
A buried chamber where a luminous root coils around an ancient stone mechanism.
The party meets the Waykeeper and Orren at the heartstone. They can fight, bargain, reveal evidence, or propose a way to stabilize the road without handing it to one claimant.
The Heartstone ChamberNextThe route responds to the party's decision, leading to a final conversation with Kaelen or an immediate consequence on the road.
Behind it
What people believe
A vanished mountain road called the Glassroot Way has begun appearing again.
Mapmaker Kaelen Thistledown asks the party to recover a brass survey lens from the route before caravan factor Orren Vask can claim it. The party must navigate a shifting trail, deal with its strange guardian, and decide whether the route should be reopened, sealed, or put to another use.
Background
Kaelen Thistledown is a traveling mapmaker known for finding old roads beneath newer ones.
Years ago, Kaelen charted the buried route called the Glassroot Way, which once carried medicine and messages between isolated settlements. Their latest expedition ended abruptly after they returned alone, carrying a water-stained map and refusing to explain what happened to the rest of the survey team.
The stakes
If Orren takes control, he can decide who travels the Glassroot Way and what is transported through it.
If the party simply destroys the route, isolated communities lose a potential lifeline. If the ward remains unstable, travelers may disappear and the road may spread beyond the hills.
Encounters
2The Overgrown Causeway
Combat
A narrow stone causeway crosses a ravine, with waist-high roots, loose paving slabs, and two broad platforms where the path widens.
Foes
Glassroot Strider
Rootbound Sentinels
ComplicationThe ward-stones react to loud impacts. Each major destructive action causes a nearby stone to flare, briefly shifting the battlefield and potentially separating combatants.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use one Rootbound Sentinel and make the Glassroot Strider retreat when wounded. For a larger or more experienced party, add another Sentinel and have the Strider use the shifting path to flank.
The Heartstone Chamber
Social or combat, depending on the party's choices
A circular chamber built around a glowing stone root. Three waist-high pillars provide cover, while narrow cracks in the floor emit light and move when the heartstone pulses.
Foes
The Waykeeper
Orren Vask's hired guards
ComplicationThe Waykeeper will suspend the confrontation if the party offers a credible plan to restore the ward or proves that Orren intends to exploit the route.
ScalingFor a less experienced party, Orren's guards withdraw when the Waykeeper intervenes. For a more experienced party, Orren has additional guards and the chamber's shifting floor creates hazardous zones each round or exchange.

WantsKaelen wants to recover a brass survey lens left on the Glassroot Way and make amends for abandoning the expedition.
“The map is accurate. That is exactly why I need you to help me prove it is incomplete.”
Mara Fen
Local guide and witness
WantsMara wants to keep travelers away from the old route until she understands why it has begun appearing again.
“A road that appears after sundown is not a road. It is an invitation, and invitations can be refused.”
Orren Vask
Antagonist and caravan factor
WantsOrren wants control of the route so he can reopen trade and secure influence over the surrounding settlements.
“If the old way can carry a cart, it can carry a whole town's winter stores.”
The Waykeeper
Supernatural guardian and wildcard
WantsThe Waykeeper seeks to prevent the Glassroot Way from being used until its buried ward is restored.
“I can make the stones remember a path. I cannot make them remember who deserves to walk it.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A hand-drawn field map of the Glassroot Way, useful but incomplete
A weatherproof survey case containing charcoal, measuring cord, and blank route sheets
The brass survey lens, if the party chooses to keep it
On a win
The party secures the lens or makes a clear decision about its fate, prevents Orren from taking unchecked control of the Glassroot Way, and establishes what will happen to the route.
Kaelen's relationship with the party depends on whether they uncover the full story and whether they let Kaelen face its consequences.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party fails to secure the brass survey lens before Orren's crew reaches it.
- Orren gains the lens and a usable route map, then opens the Glassroot Way for his own caravans. The party may still pursue him or negotiate to limit the damage.
- The party leaves the heartstone chamber without restoring the ward or reaching an agreement with the Waykeeper.
- The ward remains unstable. The route continues to appear unpredictably, stranding travelers and drawing dangerous creatures into the area.
- The party exposes Kaelen's past but cannot recover evidence that explains why the survey team was abandoned.
- Kaelen's account becomes the only surviving record of the expedition, and local trust in them deteriorates. Kaelen may leave town or refuse future help.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden rainstorm turns the hillside approach into slick clay; the party must secure its footing or lose an hour and leave an obvious trail.
- 2A marker stone rotates when nobody is watching, redirecting the party toward a dead-end ravine unless someone checks the map against the stars or landscape.
- 3Orren's hired porters arrive with a second copy of Kaelen's map and demand the party hand over the route's location.
- 4A small rockslide blocks the narrow path and exposes a sealed niche containing a message from Kaelen's missing survey partner.
- 5The Waykeeper offers safe passage to one character in exchange for a personal memory they must describe aloud.
- 6The old route briefly appears in two places at once; choosing the wrong branch sends the party back to the entrance and advances Orren's efforts.
