The hook
Set the scene
The party reaches Bellwether Ford as villagers gather around the silent bell tower. Bishop Maelin meets them in a small side chapel, shows them the empty bronze socket where the Concordant Tongue belongs, and explains that the Synod will arrive at dawn in two days. Tavik waits outside, eager to tell anyone who will listen about the answering chime under the bridge.
How Bishop Maelin Voss asks
Bishop Maelin approaches the party directly at the chapel beside Bellwether Ford.
She offers an advance payment, asks them to keep the inquiry discreet, and promises a hearing before the Synod if they recover the relic.

Behind it
What people believe
The Concordant Tongue, a bronze relic used by the bishops of the Old Faith, has vanished from Bellwether Ford.
Bishop Maelin Voss hires the party to find it before the Synod gathers. Strange sounds beneath the river and anxious villagers suggest that the relic's disappearance is connected to a deeper dispute in the valley.
Background
The Old Faith teaches that the world is held in balance by seven venerable powers, each represented by a bishop who interprets the deity's will for mortal communities.
Their order, the Synod of the Rooted Bell, keeps no single central temple. Instead, its bishops travel between shrines, settle disputes, and renew ancient covenants. For generations, the bishops of the river valley have entrusted a bronze bell-clapper called the Concordant Tongue to the village of Bellwether Ford. Its sound is said to remind the bishops that no one voice can speak for the whole pantheon.
The stakes
If the party fails, the Synod may suppress the theft and leave the sluice unrepaired.
Another flood could destroy riverside homes, while the villagers lose faith in both the bishops and their own ability to be heard.
Encounters
2The Flooded Reliquary
Combat or environmental challenge
A half-submerged stone shrine beneath Bellwether Ford. Slippery steps, waist-deep water, a narrow raised ledge, and a cracked bell niche provide hazards and cover.
Foes
Two bramble-backed river hounds
One drowned shrine sentinel
ComplicationThe ledge is narrow and the shrine's old flood channels begin to fill when disturbed. Loud fighting or careless movement risks losing the clapper in the current.
ScalingFor a smaller or less capable party, use one river hound and have the sentinel retreat after a clear warning. For a larger or more capable party, add two river hounds and increase the speed of the rising water. The creatures can be calmed or bypassed if the party learns the shrine's old greeting.
The Lantern House Standoff
Social confrontation or combat
A crowded riverside shelter with a central hearth, benches, low rafters, and several exits opening onto a muddy courtyard.
Foes
Sister Orra Fen
Three determined shrine wardens
ComplicationThe villagers are frightened, not loyal to Orra. If the party threatens them, they may turn the confrontation into a public grievance that damages relations with the valley.
ScalingFor a smaller party, Orra faces the group alone and asks the wardens to stand aside. For a larger party, add two wardens and have Orra use the building's hanging lanterns and furniture to control sightlines. At any party size, a persuasive appeal to the villagers' needs can end the standoff without violence.

4Bishop Maelin Voss
QuestgiverQuestgiver and bishop of the Old Faith's Hearth aspect
WantsRestore the Concordant Tongue before the bishops arrive, while concealing her responsibility for entrusting it to the wrong custodian.
“The bell has not been stolen. It has been silenced, and those are not the same crime.”
Sister Orra Fen
Antagonist and local priest who took the bell-clapper
WantsForce the Synod to recognize the danger of the river's altered course and fund protective works for the villages downstream.
“I did what the valley needed. The bishops argue over whose god matters most while the river takes our homes.”
Tavik Reed
Witness and ferry keeper
WantsProtect the ferry families and prove that the strange sounds beneath the water are real.
“I heard singing beneath the ford. Not a hymn. More like a dozen people trying to remember one tune.”
Bishop Edrin Vale
Wild card and bishop of the Old Faith's Tide aspect
WantsKeep the Synod united, though she privately fears that its old covenant no longer serves ordinary people.
“If you bring it back, bring it back whole. A symbol can be mended. A promise is harder.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A stamped copper token granting hospitality at Old Faith shrines in the valley
A length of consecrated bell-cord, useful as a trusted sign of peaceful intent among Synod clergy
On a win
The party returns the Concordant Tongue and brings the dispute into the open.
If they also expose the neglected sluice and secure a practical repair plan, the bishops ring the bell together and publicly commit resources to the valley. Orra may face a formal censure, but her warning is recorded rather than dismissed.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot recover the Concordant Tongue before the Synod's arrival.
- The bishops arrive to find the relic missing. Maelin loses standing in the Synod, and the party must earn trust before the bishops will hear their account.
- The party drives Orra away or takes the clapper without understanding why she hid it.
- Orra's warning plan goes unheard, and the valley's vulnerable settlements face another flood without support. She may still reveal what she knows if the party offers another credible way to protect them.
- The party mishandles the clapper during the shrine's flood hazard.
- The relic is damaged or lost in the river. The Synod must decide whether a broken symbol can still renew the covenant, creating a lasting political and spiritual dispute.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden upstream release raises the ford by two feet within minutes, cutting off the safest approach to the drowned shrine.
- 2A ferryman recognizes Sister Orra and warns her that the party is asking questions, giving her time to move the clapper to a second hiding place.
- 3A novice arrives carrying a sealed Synod letter that orders Maelin to keep the matter quiet until the bishops have convened.
- 4The clapper's faint chime draws a school of pale river eels into the flooded passage, making the route noisy and hazardous.
- 5A group of displaced villagers blocks the shrine road, demanding that the party promise the Synod will repair their riverbank before they let anyone pass.
- 6A storm knocks a timber brace loose in the old shrine, threatening to collapse the dry ledge where the clapper is kept.
