The Bell Beneath Greyhook
The Bell Beneath Greyhook
Read aloud
A cold fog has rolled over Greyhook, and a voice from the harbor is calling the names of people who vanished at sea. The harbormaster offers a reward to anyone who can find the source before the tide swallows the lower docks. From the mist, a brass bell rings once.

The hook
Set the scene
The characters arrive at the lower docks as fog presses between the warehouses. A bell sounds from the lantern tower across the inlet, though the tower has been dark for years. Vessa Quill waits under an awning with a soaked ledger, while nearby dockworkers refuse to look toward the water. Tamsin Vale, clutching a net needle, says the voice from the fog has just called their brother's name.
How Harbormaster Vessa Quill asks
Vessa Quill sends a runner to find the characters, then meets them at the lower docks.
She offers immediate payment for the investigation and a larger reward if they prevent further disappearances. She is direct about the missing workers but initially avoids discussing Greyhook's old customs.

1. The Harbor's Missing
The lower docks, where workers shelter beneath tarpaulins and refuse to approach the fog.
Vessa hires the characters and Tamsin describes hearing a missing relative's voice. The party can establish what is at stake and decide whose account to investigate first.

2. Marks Above the Tide
The net loft and nearby seawall passages, where the tide has left salt lines above the current water level.
The characters compare witness accounts, inspect the tide marks, and search the net loft for a missing crew's gear. They can discover the brass tide-key and evidence that the water rose from below.

3. The Keeper's Record
The lantern tower's outer steps, locked maintenance door, and narrow upper walkways.
The party enters the tower and finds old records that reveal a recurring bell ritual. Orren can be confronted, followed, or questioned while the storm and tide close in.
NextThe bell begins its second toll, drawing the characters down to the flooded chamber.

4. A Bell for the Deep
The tower's flooded lower chamber as rain pounds the lantern room above.
The characters decide whether to stop the bell by force, persuade Orren, disrupt its mechanism, or attempt a new bargain. The encounter's outcome determines whether the harbor presence is driven off, contained, or negotiated with.
The Bell Beneath the LanternNextWith the bell silent or the bargain settled, the party returns to Greyhook to face the town's response and choose what to reveal.
Behind it
What people believe
Several harbor workers and sailors have vanished during a week of unnatural fog.
The latest sightings point toward Greyhook's abandoned lantern tower, where a bell has begun ringing after midnight. Harbormaster Vessa Quill asks the characters to investigate and stop any further disappearances before a major storm reaches the coast.
Background
Greyhook is a rain-soaked harbor town built around a deep, narrow inlet where ships can anchor safely even during violent storms.
Its old sea wall and lantern tower date back to a time when the town's founders made offerings to something beneath the water. Most residents now treat that history as superstition, though the harbor still observes a quiet custom: no bell is rung after midnight.
The stakes
If the characters do nothing, the bell will ring three times during the coming storm.
More residents will be drawn into the harbor, the lower docks will flood, and Greyhook may lose both its workers and its safest anchorage.
Encounters
2The Drowned Net Loft
Combat
A cluttered net loft on pilings, with hanging nets, narrow walkways, open water below, and crates that shift as the tide rises.
Foes
Brinebound deckhands, drowned sailors animated by the harbor presence
A tide-slicked harbor eel, an oversized predator drawn by the disturbance
ComplicationRising water divides the room and carries loose crates through the combat area. If the party takes too long, the safest exit becomes submerged.
ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused party, use only two deckhands and make the eel flee when injured. For a larger or more capable party, add two deckhands and have the eel use the flooded channels to reposition.
The Bell Beneath the Lantern
Combat or social confrontation
The lower chamber of the lantern tower, with a corroded bell mechanism, a flooded stairwell, slick stone ledges, and a narrow maintenance bridge over a dark cistern.
Foes
Orren Silt, the tower keeper
A harbor wraith, a custom supernatural guardian formed from the voices of the missing
ComplicationOrren can ring the bell during the confrontation. Each toll brings the water higher and strengthens the voices, but the party can interrupt him by reaching the bell rope, convincing him to stop, or damaging the mechanism.
ScalingFor a less experienced party, the wraith's presence is primarily a hazard that can be suppressed by disrupting the bell, and Orren may surrender when confronted with evidence. For a stronger party, the wraith can move through the flooded floor and attempt to separate characters.

QuestgiverQuestgiver
WantsKeep the harbor open and prevent panic from driving Greyhook's merchants and residents away.
“Three crews have vanished in a week. I need someone willing to go where my harbor watch cannot.”
Nim Rell
Ally and tide-surveyor
WantsProve that the disappearances are connected to changes in the sea wall before the next storm arrives.
“The old tide marks are wrong. The water is climbing the stone from below, not rolling in from the sea.”
Tamsin Vale
Witness and dockside net-mender
WantsFind out whether the voice heard near the old bell tower belonged to their missing brother, and protect other families from the same grief.
“I heard my brother call from the fog. I know he was lost at sea, but that was his voice.”
Orren Silt
Antagonist, keeper of the lantern tower
WantsRestore the old pact by ringing the tower bell and offering a living person to the presence below.
“The bell must ring once more. The sea remembers its bargain, even if Greyhook has forgotten.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A brass tide-key that opens the lantern tower's maintenance door
A stormglass lantern that glows faintly near dangerous changes in the tide
A signed harbor token granting free passage on local ferries for one season
On a win
The disappearances stop, the bell falls silent, and Greyhook survives the approaching storm.
The characters may rescue some missing sailors if they act quickly and find a safe route through the flooded tower. The town's response depends on how the party resolves the pact: grateful relief if they protect the residents, uneasy respect if they negotiate with the presence, or bitter suspicion if the docks are badly damaged.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The characters fail to reach the tower before the tide blocks the lower entrance.
- The party may retreat, seek help, or attempt another route, but the next scene begins with the harbor partially flooded.
- The characters do not stop the bell from completing its sequence of three tolls.
- The missing crews are not recovered, and the harbor presence gains a stronger foothold in Greyhook. Future disappearances become more frequent.
- The characters cannot persuade Vessa or the harbor watch that the tower is responsible before the final confrontation.
- The characters can still expose Orren or protect the town, but residents may blame them for the damage and distrust their account of events.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden tide surge floods the lowest nearby passage, forcing the party to retreat, find a higher route, or cross through waist-deep water.
- 2A harbor watch patrol arrives and orders the party to surrender any recovered tower keys, delaying access until the characters explain their purpose or slip away.
- 3A voice from the fog calls one character by a private name and offers a convincing memory in exchange for being let into the party's shelter.
- 4A mooring chain snaps loose and sweeps across the dock, threatening to knock people into the harbor and blocking the direct route.
- 5Tamsin arrives with a lantern and insists on joining the search, even as the strange voices begin calling from the water.
- 6The lantern tower's warning light goes dark. For the next scene, distant landmarks are difficult to recognize and the party must navigate by sound, map, or local knowledge.
