The Opening

A sealed battlefield has begun walking across the countryside, leaving glowing scars wherever it passes. The next settlement in its path is Bellweather, and the only people who know how to stop it are the dead soldiers still marching beneath its torn banners. Find the battlefield, learn where it is going, and end its advance before the land itself becomes a war zone.

Set the Scene

Mara Venn brings the party to a roadside watchtower overlooking a valley. Beyond the fields, a dark line of trenches moves slowly across the land as if the countryside were a cloth being dragged beneath it. The party sees trees uproot and replant themselves, a ruined cannon roll uphill, and a fresh blue-white scar split an abandoned road. Mara gives them a scar compass and explains that Bellweather lies directly in the battlefield's path.

  5. 05
A dead officer has been seen riding ahead of the army and pointing toward the capital.
  6. 06
The scars are warm in winter and cold in summer, as if they remember a different season.
Stakes

If the battlefield reaches Bellweather, the town will be split by a permanent magical scar and hundreds of residents may be displaced, killed, or transformed into part of the marching dead. If the Red Ledger is lost, the original massacre remains officially erased and the Census Authority gains a reason to hunt everyone involved.

Ticking Clock·The battlefield reaches Bellweather after three major movements. Each major delay, failed crossing, or abandoned rescue advances the clock. Once the third movement begins, the final confrontation must occur before the battlefield reaches the town.

Background Lore

The Eighth Census is a borderland where every road, village, battlefield, and grave has been measured, named, and assigned a place in reality. Decades ago, the Battle of Red Ledger was sealed beneath a ring of standing stones after both armies used forbidden cartographic magic to prevent the dead from being counted among the living. The seal held until recently, when the battlefield tore itself free and began walking across the countryside. Wherever it passes, the land is cut by fresh magical scars, old wounds reopen, and pieces of the battlefield appear in places where no battle ever occurred.

What the World Knows

A sealed battlefield has begun moving across the countryside, leaving fresh magical scars wherever it passes. The party must track it through altered terrain, protect communities caught in its path, and find a way to halt its march before it reaches Bellweather. The battlefield contains a command structure, a hidden cause, and possibly the only record of the people lost in the original battle.
