The Opening

The market stones split beneath your feet, and something black and glassy pushes upward through the gap. As priests and mages race toward the breach, a voice beneath the paving whispers each of your names. Warden Mara Venn offers coin, authority, and one warning: reach whatever is below before the factions do.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins at noon during the busiest hour of the Veyrmarket. A tremor knocks loose awnings and jars of oil as a jagged fissure opens between the fruit stalls. Black crystal roots push through the paving stones, and a wave of cold air carries whispered names from below. Mara Venn pulls the characters aside while temple acolytes and Collegium apprentices begin sealing off opposite ends of the street.

Mara Venn, Warden of the Scales

Mara Venn approaches the characters amid the evacuation, speaking quickly while directing guards and frightened vendors. She offers official authority, emergency payment, and access to the market's sealed maintenance tunnels. She does not reveal that both factions have already bribed or threatened members of her watch.

Stakes

If the characters fail, the Root-Heart may grow through the city, turning the market into the first chamber of a resurrected battlefield. If either faction claims it, the breach becomes a weapon that could reignite the ancient war across Fae-Rune. The lives of hundreds of market residents are at risk, but so is the autonomy of the dead memories beneath the city.

Ticking Clock·The breach widens with each major delay. After three significant scenes, the Root-Heart begins forming a body. After five, the market's foundations start collapsing and both factions initiate their final rituals.

Background Lore

The city of Veyrmarket was built over the Ashen Scar, a battlefield where mortal armies, fae courts, and rune mages once shattered reality itself. For generations, the scar remained sealed beneath the market foundations. Recent tremors have split the paving stones, exposing a living root of black crystal that pulses beneath the stalls. The Temple of the Brazen Saint claims the breach must be sanctified, while the Collegium of Returning Stars insists it must be studied and harvested.

What the World Knows

A war scar has opened beneath Veyrmarket, exposing a black crystal growth that appears to be alive. The Temple of the Brazen Saint wants to sanctify and seal it, while the Collegium of Returning Stars wants to study and control it. The characters are hired to reach the breach first, protect civilians, and prevent either faction from claiming whatever is climbing out.
