The Bell Beneath the Fog
The Bell Beneath the Fog
Read aloud
The village well has gone dark, and a silver fog now creeps through the orchards at night. At midnight, the bell atop the abandoned observatory rings by itself. Linda Fairheart offers a reward to anyone brave enough to find out what is calling from the hill.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Learn what has changed at the Moonwell and reach the abandoned observatory.
- 2Cross the orchard and discover the source of the unnatural fog.
- 3Find the silver lens and uncover what Orris intends to do with it.
- 4Resolve the crisis at the Moonwell and decide what becomes of its power.
The clock
At each midnight bell, the fog advances one significant step: first into the orchard, then to the village outskirts, and finally to the market and wells. If the party delays for three nights, Bellwether must evacuate and the Moonwell becomes much harder to stabilize.

The hook
Set the scene
Linda Fairheart meets the party beneath the covered market awning while fog presses against the street beyond. She has set a dry apple branch and a hand-drawn map on the table. She explains that the Moonwell has stopped glowing, the observatory bell rings each night, and workers have begun vanishing in the orchard. As she speaks, the bell sounds once in the distance, though it is still afternoon.
How Linda Fairheart asks
Linda approaches the party directly at the covered market or asks the innkeeper to bring them to her orchard shed.
She is practical and candid about the danger, offers a modest advance, and asks them to avoid frightening the villagers with unverified rumors.

1. A Bell in Daylight
Bellwether's covered market and the nearby orchard shed
The party hears Linda's account, questions her, and chooses what to ask the villagers. Tamsin can identify the pale footprints and describe the voices in the fog; Mara can point out that the bell's timing matches an old chart.
NextFollowing Tamsin's footprints or Mara's chart leads the party into the orchard as the fog begins to thicken.

2. Footprints in the Mist
Bellwether's old apple orchard at dusk
The party crosses the orchard, where the fog imitates familiar voices and the fogbound hound stalks them between rows of trees. They can fight, evade the creatures, or identify and disrupt the bell's echo.
The Orchard That AnswersNextA trail of pale marks leads to a hillside door beneath the observatory, while the recovered sounds or signs point to Orris's involvement.

3. The Silent Observatory
The abandoned hilltop observatory, including its cracked dome and spiral stair
The party explores the observatory's neglected rooms, finds evidence of the Moonwell's history, and searches for a way into the sealed archive. They can examine star charts, follow the sound of the bell, or use the footprints from the orchard.
NextA hidden passage or the observatory's central stair opens into the archive, where Orris is preparing the silver lens.

4. The Caretaker's Bargain
The observatory archive, beneath the cracked glass dome
Orris confronts the party in the archive. The characters can bargain, expose his plan, take the lens, or fight him and his sentries. The archive's records reveal the cost of forcing the Moonwell to serve only one community.
The Sealed ArchiveNextOnce the party has the lens or a way to reach the well, the bell's echo pulls them below the observatory.

5. What the Well Remembers
The root-lined chamber beneath the observatory, lit by the silver lens and the well's changing reflections
At the Moonwell, the party faces a shifting echo and chooses how the well should be handled. They may restore it, divide its benefit, or seal it. Their decision determines the condition of the surrounding region and how Linda and Orris respond.
The Moonwell's ChoiceNextThe fog either retreats, changes course, or remains as a lingering threat, leading into the party's return to Bellwether and the aftermath.
Behind it
What people believe
The Moonwell beneath the old observatory has gone dark, and unnatural fog is spreading through Bellwether's orchards.
Linda Fairheart hires the party to investigate the midnight bell, find the source of the disturbance, and restore the village's water before the fog reaches its homes. A former observatory caretaker may know more than he is willing to say.
Background
For generations, the village of Bellwether has relied on the Moonwell, a spring beneath an abandoned hilltop observatory.
Its water keeps nearby orchards fertile and helps travelers find their way through the surrounding fog. Three nights ago, the well's silver glow went dark. Since then, the fog has crept closer to town, and the observatory bell has rung at midnight despite having no clapper.
The stakes
If the Moonwell is mishandled, Bellwether's water supply will fail and the fog may spread across the lowlands.
If Orris gains control, his hamlet may be protected temporarily, but the surrounding region risks being overwhelmed by memories given physical form.
Encounters
3The Orchard That Answers
Combat or evasion
Rows of close-set apple trees, low stone walls, irrigation ditches, and rolling fog that limits sight across the orchard.
Foes
Fogbound hound
2 mist wraiths
ComplicationWhen the bell sounds, the fog thickens and muffles speech. Characters who leave the marked path risk becoming separated unless they communicate or mark their route.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use one mist wraith and have the hound retreat when injured. For a larger or more capable party, add a second hound or let the fog wraiths re-form once unless the party disrupts the bell's echo.
The Sealed Archive
Social or combat
A circular archive lined with tall cabinets, a narrow spiral stair, a heavy central table, and a glass ceiling open to the fog.
Foes
Orris Vale
2 observatory sentries
ComplicationOrris has rigged the archive door to release a burst of cold vapor if opened carelessly. The vapor extinguishes ordinary flames and briefly makes spoken words echo from the wrong direction.
ScalingOrris can be convinced to stand down if the party presents evidence of the danger to his hamlet. For a gentler scene, the sentries are startled villagers who can be talked down. For a tougher scene, they are animated bronze instruments rather than people.
The Moonwell's Choice
Exploration and skill challenge
A sunken stone chamber with a clear pool, narrow ledges, root-covered pillars, and a suspended silver lens that focuses moonlight.
Foes
Moonwell echo
ComplicationEach time someone handles the silver lens, it shows a different memory of the well. A character who acts on a false vision may trigger a burst that pushes everyone nearby away from the basin.
ScalingThe echo can be overcome through force, careful ritual, or a sincere act of trust. If the group is struggling, Linda can identify a safe sequence from a childhood rhyme. For a more demanding finale, the well also creates one fog-creature for each failed attempt to stabilize it.

4Linda Fairheart
QuestgiverQuestgiver and village orchard keeper
WantsLinda wants the Moonwell restored before the village's orchards and livelihoods are lost. She also wants the truth about her family's connection to the observatory kept from panic-prone villagers until she understands it herself.
“I can offer you a fair bargain, but I will not pretend this is only about water.”
Mara Venn
Ally and village astronomer
WantsMara has spent years studying the observatory's old star charts. She wants to retrieve a chart from its sealed archive, even if doing so risks worsening the disturbance.
“The fog does not lie. People simply dislike what it shows them.”
Orris Vale
Antagonist and former observatory caretaker
WantsOrris wants to bind the Moonwell's strange power to protect his isolated hamlet from the encroaching fog. He believes the people of Bellwether would waste that power and will resist anyone trying to stop him.
“The well is not broken. It is answering a call, and I intend to make sure it answers only mine.”
Tamsin Reed
Witness and orchard worker
WantsTamsin wants the fog driven away and her missing brother found. She is frightened but observant, and can describe a trail of pale footprints leading toward the hill.
“I heard the bell, then my own voice calling from the orchard. I did not follow it, though it knew my name.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Linda's moonseed lantern, a sturdy lantern whose pale glow remains visible through ordinary fog
A sealed vial of Moonwell water, useful as a campaign-specific clue or one-time magical reagent
The brass star map, if recovered from the observatory archive
On a win
The party stabilizes the Moonwell, slows the fog, and ensures that Bellwether has a clear path forward.
Linda thanks them publicly, but the exact settlement depends on their choices: the well can be restored under careful guardianship, shared with Orris's hamlet, or sealed until the region is ready to face what it contains.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The characters cannot stabilize the Moonwell or leave the hill with the silver lens.
- The Moonwell remains unstable and the fog spreads into Bellwether. Linda organizes an evacuation, while the party must decide whether to defend the village or seek another way to contain the well.
- The party fails to stop Orris from taking the lens fragment.
- Orris escapes with a piece of the lens and attempts to bind the Moonwell from his hamlet. He becomes a recurring rival, and the well's power is divided unpredictably between the two settlements.
- The party abandons the search before locating the missing orchard worker.
- Tamsin's brother is found but remains trapped in the fog's memory-haunted paths. Linda secures the village for now, but further expeditions will be needed.
Complications (d6)
- 1A bank of fog rolls across the road, separating one character from the group for a few minutes. The isolated character hears a loved one's voice calling from off the path.
- 2The observatory bell rings before midnight. Its note draws nearby fog-creatures toward the loudest source of light.
- 3A Moonwell surge makes one character briefly see the observatory as it appeared decades ago, including a useful glimpse of a concealed doorway.
- 4A frightened orchard worker mistakes the party for Orris's accomplices and blocks the path until the characters calm or persuade them.
- 5A stone walkway collapses beneath a character, leaving them clinging above a narrow ravine while the others must find a safe way to help.
- 6The fog repeats a private statement made earlier by a party member, in a voice recognizable to everyone present.
