The Bell Beneath Merek's End
The Bell Beneath Merek's End
Read aloud
At dusk, a bell rings from the ruined watchtower above Merek's End, though its bell was removed generations ago. By morning, three villagers have vanished near the ravine, and the reeve is offering a reward to anyone who will find them before the next storm.

The hook
Set the scene
The reeve receives the party in a shuttered meeting room as rain gathers over the hills. Through the window, the old watchtower stands against the last light. Talla explains that the bell rang three times, the missing villagers were last seen near the ravine, and the settlement cannot spare people to search. Lysa Rill waits outside, insisting that she heard a voice from the tower call her by a childhood name.
How Talla Venn asks
Talla Venn asks the party to meet privately, offers an advance for supplies, and stresses that the settlement needs a practical solution before the storm.
She can provide a local map and arrange a guide to the ravine.

1. The Bell at Dusk
The settlement meeting room, with rain gathering beyond its shuttered windows
Talla hires the party, explains the disappearances, and introduces Lysa, whose testimony points toward the ravine. The party can ask for supplies, a local map, or permission to question witnesses.

2. The Ravine Road

4. Names in the Flood
A half-flooded stone chamber beneath the tower, with the old bell frame visible through a broken ceiling and names scratched into the vault walls
Inside the vault, the party finds the missing villagers sheltering above the waterline and discovers records identifying the people sealed inside. The dead respond to the party's choice: name and release them, renew the ward, or devise another resolution.
Merek's EndNextThe bell falls silent or changes its tone as the party returns to the settlement with survivors, evidence, or an unresolved warning.
Behind it
What people believe
A bell has begun ringing from the ruined watchtower known as Merek's End, and villagers have vanished near its ravine.
Reeve Talla Venn asks the party to find the missing people, discover the source of the bell, and prevent further danger before a storm reaches the settlement. The old site is unstable, partly flooded, and rumored to be haunted.
Background
Merek's End is the name locals give to a collapsed watchtower and the ravine beneath it.
Decades ago, Captain Merek sealed the tower's lower vault during a flood, trapping several villagers who had taken shelter there. The official account says the tower fell in a storm. Since then, the ravine has swallowed sound, and its stones sometimes ring like a bell.
The stakes
If the party delays, the storm may flood the vault and kill the missing villagers.
If the party mishandles the ward, the restless dead may leave the ravine and frighten or harm people in the settlement. The truth may also implicate respected local families.
Encounters
2Merek's End
Combat or tense negotiation
A steep ravine beneath a broken watchtower, with slick shale ledges, a half-flooded stair, scattered ward-stones, and a central bell frame hanging over a dark cleft.
Foes
Ravine wights, custom restless dead formed from the tower's trapped defenders
Shale-crawlers, custom small scavengers that attack from cracks in the stone
ComplicationThe ravine's broken footing and intermittent echoes make it difficult to coordinate. A bell toll during the encounter can trigger falling rubble or confuse the direction of a foe's movement.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use one ravine wight and make the shale-crawlers flee after the first clear setback. For a larger or more experienced party, add a second ravine wight and let the terrain shift once during the encounter. These are system-agnostic adjustments, not rules-specific creature statistics.
The Warden's Threshold
Social or combat
A cramped stone landing at the sealed vault entrance, with a narrow approach, cracked ward symbols, and a waist-high channel carrying water toward the ravine.
Foes
Sergeant Odran Pell, if negotiations fail
Two ward-bound sentries, custom animated armor or equivalent guardians
ComplicationOdran is trying to repair the ward while the party investigates. If challenged, he attempts to stall them until the water rises; if shown credible evidence, he may help them reach the vault.
ScalingFor a lower-pressure session, Odran begins willing to talk and only one sentry is active. For a more dangerous version, both sentries awaken at once and the unstable floor becomes a hazard. Resolve Odran as a social obstacle rather than a combatant if the group seeks a peaceful solution.
Cast
4Talla Venn
QuestgiverQuestgiver and reeve of the settlement
WantsStop the strange sounds before panic empties the settlement, while concealing that her own family once profited from salvaging the tower.
“The bell rang three times last night. It has never rung once in living memory.”
Iven Sorn
Ally, local historian and surveyor
WantsFind proof that the people trapped in the vault were deliberately abandoned, and preserve the site long enough to document it.
“There are old marks beneath the tower. Let me read them before anyone breaks another stone.”
Sergeant Odran Pell
Antagonist, caretaker of the watchtower's remaining wards
WantsKeep the vault sealed and prevent Captain Merek's restless spirit from escaping, even if that means withholding the truth from the living.
“I did not call you here to hear a verdict. I called you because the dead are waking.”
Lysa Rill
Witness and village ferrier
WantsRecover a family signet left among the trapped dead and learn what happened to an ancestor who vanished at Merek's End.
“If you hear your own voice from below, do not answer it.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A weatherproof lantern recovered from the tower stores
Optional: Lysa's family signet, returned if the party retrieves it
On a win
The missing villagers are recovered or their fate is established, the party discovers the reason for the bell, and the immediate threat is contained through a solution they can defend to the settlement.
A release of the dead brings the spirits peace but exposes a painful history; a reinforced ward buys safety at the cost of leaving that history unresolved.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- Navigate the ravine
- If the party cannot find a safe route through the ravine, they arrive at the vault after the water has risen. The trapped evidence is damaged and the final approach becomes hazardous, but remains possible.
- Resolve the confrontation at the warden's threshold
- If the party fails to persuade or overcome Odran, he completes a partial resealing. The dead are contained for now, but the party must enter by a dangerous breach and loses time.
- Settle the dead or release them safely
- If the party leaves the vault sealed without settling the restless dead, the bell falls silent but returns on the next storm. The settlement remains safe temporarily, and the mystery persists.
Complications (d6)
- 1A shelf of loose shale slides across the narrow ravine path, forcing the party to find another route or secure a safe passage.
- 2The tower bell rings once without being touched; for the next scene, spoken directions echo from the wrong direction.
- 3A sudden rain surge fills the lowest passage ankle-deep and begins rising, making time spent searching consequential.
- 4A frightened scavenger mistakes the party for Odran's reinforcements and flees with a vital piece of evidence.
- 5A dead voice repeats one character's private words from earlier in the adventure, unsettling nearby witnesses and attracting the restless.
- 6The old ward-stones flare, briefly sealing the safest exit and forcing the party to choose between disabling the ward or taking a hazardous route.
