The Long Shift
The Long Shift
Read aloud
The factory siren gives one low, exhausted note, then falls silent. Through the frost-clouded windows, workers stand motionless beneath the dead lamps, weeping for people they swear they have never met. Foreman Sella Venn presses a warm, nearly empty Vigil canister into your hands and asks you to keep the Bellwether Works alive until dawn that will not come.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 11. Find the cause of the supply failure and stabilize the factory floor.
- 22. Investigate the reservoir and uncover the source of the shared grief.
- 33. Resolve the crisis and decide what the Bellwether Works should become.
- 44. Optional: preserve testimony and help workers process the memories rather than suppressing them.Optional
The clock
Track the reserve canisters in three stages: stable, dwindling, empty. Advance one stage after each major scene or whenever the party takes a long delay. At empty, the factory's lights fail and the next major machinery hazard becomes active. This is a custom pacing tool, not a system-specific rule.

The hook
Set the scene
The party arrives at Bellwether Works during a shift change. Frost clings to the outer pipes, emergency lamps are dimming, and the workers have gathered in small, silent knots. Some are crying; others are angrily insisting that the people in their memories never existed. Sella Venn explains that the reserve canisters will keep the factory stable only briefly, and asks the party to reach the lower service level before the line pressure collapses.
How Foreman Sella Venn asks
Sella approaches the party at the factory's outer checkpoint.
She is direct and exhausted, offers the remaining sealed Vigil canisters as a field supply, and asks them to bring back a clear choice rather than a promise to fix everything.

socialThe table is here
1. The Silent Siren
Bellwether Works checkpoint and main floor, amid dim lamps, frostbound windows, and workers arguing over memories.
Establish the crisis, offer a limited reserve supply, and make the immediate stakes visible: the crew is distressed, the lamps are failing, and the pressure line is unstable.
NextSella gives the party a service map and directs them to the press floor, where the last stable pressure reading was recorded.

3. Names in the Ducts
Narrow service ducts and a break room where workers clutch personal objects and compare memories.
Question workers and inspect the service route to learn that Mara disabled the intake and that the missing Vigil is tied to a concealed reservoir system.
NextOrrin can guide the party to the reservoir hatch, but the workers there are refusing entry.

4. What the Vigil Kept
A circular lower chamber beneath the factory, where pale vapor curls above a central tank and old names are scratched into its rim.
Face the reservoir's guards and hazards, uncover the hidden extraction process, and decide whether the workers' grief can be safely contained.
The Reservoir VigilNextWith the truth known, the party must choose a course before the reserve canisters empty and the line either ruptures or goes cold.

5. The Last Canister
The reservoir control station and adjoining valve gallery as emergency lights fail one by one.
Carry out the chosen resolution: isolate and contain the reservoir, destroy it, or attempt a careful restart through a safer route. Make the costs clear to Sella, Mara, and the crew.
NextThe factory settles into its new condition, and the party leaves with a consequence, a witness, or a lead beyond the settlement.
Behind it
What people believe
During the sunless Long Harvest, Bellwether Works has lost its supply of Vigil, the substance that keeps its night crew steady and its essential machines running.
Workers are overwhelmed by sudden grief and memories they cannot place. Foreman Sella Venn needs help tracing the failure, protecting the crew, and deciding how to keep the factory from becoming a death trap.
Background
In the Pale Accord, communities endure long stretches without sunrise by rationing Vigil, a lamp-distilled substance that steadies attention and dulls intrusive memories.
During the sunless Long Harvest, factories consume more Vigil than usual to keep machines, workers, and civic routines functioning. The Bellwether Works produces the stuff from pale lichen and sealed condensate, and its night crews have learned to treat the first unmuted memory as a warning sign.
The stakes
If the party delays, the reserve runs out and Bellwether's crew may be injured by machinery, exposure, or panic.
If production resumes without change, workers may be stabilized at the cost of continuing the hidden extraction. If the reservoir is destroyed, the factory's supply ends and nearby communities face a dangerous shortage.
Encounters
2The Stalled Press
Hazard and rescue
A narrow metal catwalk above a press floor, with waist-high rails, slick condensate, hanging hooks, and accessible emergency stop levers.
Foes
Runaway belt-and-hook assembly
Two panic-struck line workers
ComplicationThe leaking line fills the lower catwalk with choking vapor. A worker trapped beyond the machinery shouts directions that contradict the factory diagram.
ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused party, make the machinery a hazard to disable rather than an active opponent and have one worker flee. For a larger or more capable party, add a second moving belt and make the workers attempt to restart the press.
The Reservoir Vigil
Social confrontation with hazard
A circular concrete chamber with a waist-deep central tank, narrow perimeter walkway, condensation-coated ladder, and a manual isolation wheel.
Foes
Condensate-slicked maintenance drone
Three frightened workers guarding the reservoir hatch
ComplicationThe shared memories intensify near the reservoir. Anyone who argues with a remembered voice risks drawing the attention of the whole crew.
ScalingFor a party that avoids violence, the workers can be calmed by evidence or a sincere offer to protect them. For a stronger party, the drone has a second arm and the reservoir floor begins to flood during the scene.

WantsProtect the workers and make amends for helping conceal an earlier safety failure.
“I can get you through the service ducts, but do not ask me to tell you what I saw in the reservoir.”
Mara Quill
Antagonist and worker organizer
WantsExpose the factory's hidden practice and stop it, even if the shutdown costs lives or livelihoods.
“You call it a fault because that is easier than admitting the machine has been feeding on us.”
Tamsin Rook
Witness and line worker
WantsUnderstand why her memories do not match her own life and help the crew distinguish truth from shared visions.
“The voice in the pipes was my sister. She died before I ever worked here.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Two sealed emergency Vigil canisters, enough for short-term use by the party or a small crew.
A frostproof maintenance toolkit and a set of factory access keys.
Optional: a brass memory spool containing fragments recovered from the reservoir.
On a win
The party protects the crew, discovers the reservoir's role in the outage, and makes a deliberate choice about production.
Success does not require restoring the old system: isolating it, destroying it, or establishing a safer temporary supply all count if the workers understand the cost and have a viable plan to survive the immediate crisis.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot restore safe Vigil production before the factory's emergency reserves run out.
- Workers suffer an uncontrolled wave of grief and several are injured in the shutdown. The settlement loses trust in the party and may refuse future access to factory supplies.
- The party restarts the system without discovering or addressing the reservoir's true function.
- The party preserves production, but the hidden memory extraction continues. Workers remain stable for now, while resentment and unexplained recollections accumulate.
- The party chooses an irreversible shutdown or causes damage that makes the factory unusable.
- The plant is destroyed or abandoned. The workers are freed from the immediate danger, but nearby settlements face a severe Vigil shortage through the rest of the Long Harvest.
Complications (d6)
- 1A pressure valve freezes shut. The nearest crew has ten minutes before a condensate line ruptures and floods the passage with caustic brine.
- 2A worker mistakes a party member for a dead relative and blocks the only safe route, pleading for a promise that cannot be kept.
- 3A pallet of Vigil canisters tips over. One cracked canister leaks a vapor that causes vivid, overlapping grief memories in anyone nearby.
- 4The factory's bell system rings a false evacuation code, sending frightened workers toward a locked exterior airlock.
- 5A belt drive catches a loose coat and begins dragging its wearer toward exposed gearing. The machinery must be stopped or the person freed immediately.
- 6Mara's supporters remove a critical fuse to prevent the plant from restarting. They will only hand it over if the party hears their account of the missing workers.
