Echo of Creation

Twelve fragments await a decision. One warm shard keeps its own counsel.

Read aloud

The last of Azkhar’s soldiers flee into the dark, leaving the Heart’s altar to tremble beneath your feet. Eight shards lift from the stone as five more lights rise through the cracking floor, and Sorine’s warm shard pulses apart from them. Then twelve voices speak from every direction: “Choose what the world becomes.”

Cheat sheet

Objectives

  1. 1Hold the Seventh Nexus together while the fragments awaken.
  2. 2Choose what becomes of the Nova’s Heart’s twelve united fragments.
  3. 3Resolve the status of any still-attuned shards without compelling any bearer’s choice.

The clock

The altar chamber is collapsing. Resolve the skill encounter before 3 failures; each failed check advances the collapse and triggers a specific complication. Do not rush the party’s moral deliberation beyond the immediate danger they can see.

The hook

Set the scene

The retreating enemy cries fade through the tunnels, replaced by the grind of stone splitting underfoot. Above the altar, the eight shards you brought here turn slowly toward one another. Five lights rise through the floor: four join the gathering radiance, while Sorine’s shard floats apart, warm as a living hand. Valena braces a cracking pillar; Thorgrim plants his hammer against the altar. The twelve fragments speak together: “Choose what the world becomes.”

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“Some say the Dawn Nexus is not the oldest power beneath Arcanterra. The Seventh Nexus may have been sealed before the Compact was ever imagined.”
2“A shard that glows warmly rather than radiantly may be more than a fragment. No one can yet say what it wants.”
3“If the Heart is restored, the old places of power may wake with it.”

    1. The Chamber Opens

The Seventh Nexus beneath Ravenbrook Keep, at the Heart’s altar.

The party enters the Heart’s altar chamber as Azkhar’s forces retreat. Eight recovered fragments rise; four hidden lights emerge from the floor and join them. Sorine’s shard rises too, but remains warm, intact, and apart. Valena and Thorgrim brace the failing chamber. The twelve speak their invitation.

NextAs the twelve fragments draw close, the altar shudders and a seam of light races across the floor toward the heroes, drawing them into the work of holding it steady.

    2. Hold the Nexus

The cracked ring around the altar, where broken runes flare and slabs slide toward the luminous gap.

The heroes make the collapsing chamber survivable through coordinated magic, physical effort, lore, and improvisation. Valena and Thorgrim each offer one assist. Use the complication table to make failures tactile and consequential, not to force a predetermined result.

The Choice at the Heart’s Altar

NextWhen the chamber steadies, the united fragments stop turning. Their light falls across each hero in turn, and the air fills with the scent of rain on hot stone.

    3. What the World Becomes

Beside the altar, while Valena and Thorgrim hold their positions and the twelve fragments wait above the stone.

Present the four resolutions and invite the party to deliberate. Give each player space to state what their character values and what cost they accept. An attuned bearer separately chooses whether to surrender their shard’s attunement or keep the shard outside the ritual. Sorine’s shard is not offered as a piece of the choice.

NextOnce the heroes agree, the chosen bearer or bearers step toward the altar, and the twelve fragments answer with a rising chord.

    4. The Heart Answers

The Heart’s altar as the twelve fragments become one and the Nexus reshapes itself around the party’s decision.

Resolve the chosen fate through a short, vivid ritual. Purify and reforge awakens ancient sites; shatter forever begins the slow decline of magic; divide among pantheons establishes a fragile truce; seize power makes the heroes custodians and draws immediate attention. Show one concrete consequence at the altar, then let the larger consequences become future hooks.

NextThe chamber’s vibration softens into a steady pulse, and the surviving companions lead the heroes toward the stair as the last light follows them upward.

    5. A Separate Light

The passage above the Seventh Nexus, where dust settles and the sounds of Ravenbrook return.

Give the party a quiet aftermath with Valena, Thorgrim, and Sorine. Confirm the attunement records, show Sorine’s shard still separate, and let the heroes hear the first distant sign of their choice taking effect.

NextAs Sorine closes her hand around the warm shard, the party steps into the uncertain future their choice has set in motion.

Behind it

What people believe

After Azkhar’s forces retreat, the heroes must steady the collapsing Heart’s altar beneath Ravenbrook Keep and decide the fate of the twelve fragments that unite there.

Background

Beneath Ravenbrook Keep, the Seventh Nexus has guarded an ancient secret since before the Dawn Compact was signed.

The stakes

The choice determines whether the Nova’s Heart restores ancient magical balance, ends its power, divides its influence, or places creation’s stewardship in mortal hands.

Encounters

  • The Choice at the Heart’s Altar

    Skill

A circular altar chamber beneath Ravenbrook Keep. The cracked stone floor drops toward a luminous, soundless void. Twelve fragments draw together above the altar, while Sorine’s warm shard hovers apart. Falling masonry, radiant pulses, and broken runic channels make movement hazardous.

ComplicationRun this as a collapsing-chamber skill encounter rather than a required fight. The party needs 4 successes before 3 failures, using varied approaches such as Arcana, Athletics, Religion, Insight, or a relevant tool proficiency at DC 15. A character who describes a particularly apt use of a spell or feature may gain advantage or an automatic success at the GM’s discretion. Roll or choose a complication after each failed check. Valena and Thorgrim can each provide one described assist, granting advantage on one check, but they cannot make the choice for the heroes.

ScalingFor a party of four or fewer, require 3 successes before 3 failures. For a party of six or more, require 5 successes before 3 failures. Do not use the skill encounter to decide the heroes’ moral choice; it only determines the cost and stability of carrying it out.

  • Valena

    Ally

WantsValena wants the heroes to choose with care, mindful that restoring ancient power may also awaken what was bound alongside it.

“The stone is moving beneath us. Decide what you want the world to remember, and I will keep this chamber standing as long as I can.”
  • Thorgrim

    Ally

WantsThorgrim wants to protect the party while ensuring the choice belongs to them, not to the Nexus or its magic.

“This rune predates my kingdom. It was made to hold a choice, not make one for you.”
  • Sorine, the Kindled Heart

    Witness

WantsSorine wants to understand her shard’s independence, but will not let others treat it as a missing piece to be forced into place.

“I can feel them reaching for one another. Mine is not reaching back.”
  • Azkhar

    Antagonist

WantsAzkhar seeks to exploit the moment of choice, hoping to bend the united Heart toward his own vision if the heroes falter.

“You have brought them together. Now tell me, are you certain you know what unity costs?”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Milestone: this is the final chapter of the level 3–10 campaign. Award the campaign’s level 10 milestone at the appropriate point in the finale.
Gold: No standard gold reward. The heroes may recover 500 gp in abandoned supplies and valuables from the retreating force, if appropriate to the campaign.
In the story: The climax resolves the fate of the twelve united fragments and establishes a major consequence for Arcanterra’s magic and politics. Sorine’s shard remains a continuing mystery.
Standing: The heroes’ choice becomes known across Arcanterra. Grant major standing with allies who support the chosen outcome; factions opposed to it may withdraw aid or become wary. Do not assign a universal numeric bonus.

Items

  • The reunited Nova’s Heart is a story-level artifact and should not be treated as ordinary party loot. Its final form and powers depend on the chosen resolution.

  • If any bearer keeps an attuned shard, they retain its existing boon and Influence progression.

On a win

The party stabilizes the altar long enough for the twelve fragments to become a single willing whole and enact the heroes’ choice.

What it leaves open

If the heroes purify and reforge the Heart, restored leylines awaken ancient guardians, forgotten shrines, and dormant Titan sites. What has been sleeping beneath the world?
If they shatter the Heart forever, magic fades gradually, first in distant regions. How do rulers and communities built around arcane power adapt?
If they divide the fragments among pantheons, a tense divine truce begins. Which power tests its limits first?
If they seize stewardship, the heroes become recognized custodians of a new magical order. Worshipers, political demands, Tribunal assassins, and planar challengers may soon come seeking them.
Sorine’s shard remains intact and unanswered. Its future, and the reason it chose to remain apart, belongs to what comes next.

If it fails

The party reaches 3 failures in the collapsing-chamber skill encounter.
Valena and Thorgrim keep the chamber from collapsing long enough for the party to choose, but each is injured and must be carried or helped out. The chosen resolution still takes effect.
The heroes cannot stabilize the ritual before the chamber gives way.
The twelve fragments still unite and honor the party’s decision, but the Nexus discharges violently. Each hero takes 4d6 force damage, or an equivalent consequence in a system-neutral game.
A player declines to release their attuned shard into the ritual. This is a meaningful choice, not a failed check or a punishment.
A shard bearer who retains an attuned shard keeps its boon and its growing Influence DC, but that shard remains outside the twelve-fragment choice. Record the bearer’s decision and the shard’s status for continuity.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A slab drops between two heroes and the altar. A character must spend an action and succeed on a DC 15 Strength (Athletics) check to shift it; otherwise, those separated cannot contribute to the same ritual check this round.
  2. 2A surge of cold light silences all speech for one minute. Characters can still communicate through gestures, but the next group check to coordinate the ritual is made with disadvantage.
  3. 3A crack opens beneath the altar, venting a gust that scatters loose objects. Each character near the altar must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone and lose their next 10 feet of movement.
  4. 4One of the united fragments flares with an alien memory. A character who touches it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be distracted by the vision, unable to take reactions until the end of their next turn.
  5. 5The rune in Thorgrim’s hammer glows and begins to split the altar’s support. Thorgrim can stabilize it with a successful DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) or Wisdom (Perception) check; on a failure, the next ritual check is made with disadvantage.
  6. 6A loose piece of masonry pins Valena’s cloak and arm. A character can free her with an action and a successful DC 13 Strength check; until then, she cannot help hold the chamber.
