The Opening

You hear your own voice from the next room, saying something you have never said aloud. When you enter, the Red Echo is waiting beside the door that once closed between you and someone you loved. It smiles as if the argument has only just begun.

— Hook · Confrontation

Set the Scene

The hero encounters a minor provocation that should not matter as much as it does: a message left unanswered, a familiar tone in a stranger's voice, a door closed too quickly, or a promise casually broken. Before the hero can decide whether to dismiss it, the scene repeats with one impossible alteration. The Red Echo is now present, standing where the unresolved past has always been waiting.

The Unanswered Voice

The quest arrives through a small emotional disturbance rather than a formal request. The hero notices that an ordinary moment has acquired the pressure of an older one, then hears the Red Echo invite them to finish an argument that has outlived its original participants.

Rumours

d4 · table
  1. 01
The Red Echo appears wherever an argument is repeated after everyone has forgotten its beginning.
  2. 02
Some people say the first person to name their anger loses the right to use it.
  3. 03
A door in the old place has been opening by itself, though no one agrees which side of it leads out.
  4. 04
Mara once heard the Red Echo speaking before the hero ever did.
Stakes

If the hero follows the rage-loop, every future conflict may be interpreted through the original wound. If the hero interrupts it, they must surrender the comfort of total innocence and live with a truth that does not repair the past.

Ticking Clock·With each avoided answer, the present scene becomes more like the original wound. Once the hero repeats the original final sentence, the Red Echo will no longer need to ask permission to return.

Background Lore

In this story-journal game, unresolved anger does not remain inside a person. It gathers shape, learns the language of old wounds, and returns whenever the hero mistakes recognition for surrender. The pressure-figure called the Red Echo has followed the hero through every unfinished argument, growing stronger each time heat was swallowed, redirected, or named too late.

What the World Knows

A familiar anger has returned wearing a new face. The hero must confront the Red Echo at the threshold of an old wound and decide whether to pursue an accusation that feels true, protect someone who may be trying to help, or remain long enough to discover what the anger is actually demanding. No choice restores what was lost, but refusing to choose will allow the rage-loop to choose for them.
