The Opening

The town bell rings once at sunset, though the bell tower has been locked for twenty years. By dawn, every grave in Bellwether Ford bears a fresh white iron nail, and a pale rider is seen waiting beyond the west gate. Sister Maelin begs you to find the rider before the bell rings again at midnight.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens in Bellwether Ford's cemetery at sunset. Frost spreads across the gravestones in the shape of marching lines, and a newly hammered white nail protrudes from the central mausoleum door. Before the characters can investigate, Talla Reed runs from the west gate, pursued by three translucent soldiers who vanish when the town bell rings once.

Sister Maelin Voss

Sister Maelin approaches the characters in the cemetery after the first bell. She is exhausted, practical, and unwilling to pay for a simple monster hunt because she believes the haunting is tied to an old crime committed by the town's founders.

Ticking Clock·The first bell has already rung. The second bell sounds when the party leaves the cemetery or fails the council scene. The third bell rings at midnight, completing the Pale Marshal's muster.

Background Lore

For three generations, the border town of Bellwether Ford has marked its dead with white iron nails driven into the old watchroad. The custom began after a military commander known as the Pale Marshal vanished during a winter retreat, taking an entire company with him. Every few years, travelers report seeing a pale rider at dusk, followed by silent soldiers carrying lanterns with no flames.

What the World Knows

The characters are hired to protect Bellwether Ford from a spectral military commander called the Pale Marshal. The Marshal is gathering the dead from the town cemetery and intends to reclaim the settlement in the name of a forgotten army. The party must investigate the haunting, win the town's cooperation, and reach the abandoned signal tower before midnight.
