The Opening

Mara Vale finds you before dawn with a sealed page bearing your name and no signature. She says the city's founding ceremony cannot begin until you retrieve it from the Bellwether Room, where every unfinished story is kept. As you enter the archive, a voice behind the mirrors says, “At last. The person who has been taking credit for your life.”

Set the Scene

The hero arrives at the Bellwether Room while the city is still blue with morning. Their past accomplishments appear as small illuminated scenes across the walls, but each scene includes a second figure in the margins: a mentor, colleague, stranger, or accident that helped make the success possible. Before the hero can decide whether this makes the achievements less real, the Mirror Clerk steps from the reflection and asks which part they intend to claim.

Mara Vale

Mara approaches the hero privately, carrying a sealed page and speaking with practical urgency. She does not flatter the hero or insist they are secretly extraordinary. Instead, she asks them to face the record because the city has already built part of its future around what the hero did.

  1. 01
The Bellwether Room contains the first draft of every important civic story.
  2. 02
People who enter the archive return with their names written in someone else's handwriting.
  3. 03
The Mirror Clerk only appears to people who have been praised for something they do not understand how to repeat.
  4. 04
Mara once sealed her own testimony and has never opened it.
  5. 05
The city honors its founders, but nobody agrees on who actually built it.
Stakes

If the hero cannot make a truthful claim, the city's history will preserve an elegant lie: either the hero did everything alone or the hero did nothing worth naming. The deeper stake is whether the hero can accept that dependence, luck, and uncertainty do not cancel competence.

Ticking Clock·The founding ceremony begins at sunrise. When the first bell rings, the archive will seal its account and the city will adopt whichever version of the hero's story remains inside.

Background Lore

In the modern city of Meridian, people tell stories about the Bellwether Room, a hidden archive where unfinished lives are recorded before the world decides what they mean. The archive is protected by the Mirror Clerk, a pressure-figure who appears whenever someone begins to doubt whether their gifts are truly theirs. The Clerk does not destroy confidence outright. It asks questions that sound like concern, then waits for the hero to answer them with surrender.

What the World Knows

The hero must retrieve a sealed testimony from a hidden archive before the city's founding ceremony. Inside, a mysterious clerk challenges the hero's right to claim past accomplishments, forcing a choice between public recognition and the safety of disappearing behind other people's names.
