The Bastion Beneath the Falling Star
The Bastion Beneath the Falling Star
Read aloud
A bell rings once from the observatory tower, though its rope has been cut. Blue light leaks from every window, and the stones beneath your feet shiver. Curator Elian Voss hurries toward you with an empty velvet case: Starfall Bastion is gone, and the mountain has begun to wake.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Find out who took Starfall Bastion and where they went.
- 2Reach Mara Quill and secure a path to the old refuge.
- 3Resolve the Warden's claim and determine the relic's fate.
- 4Prevent either community from being left defenseless.Optional
The clock
The mountain gives a noticeable tremor every hour of in-world time. After three tremors, the observatory ward fails. Telegraph the count clearly; the party can slow the clock by stabilizing the ward, diverting pressure through the old refuge, or securing Elian's help.

The hook
Set the scene
Read the hook aloud as the party reaches the observatory. Elian asks for help before the next tremor, but the observatory staff disagree about whether the relic was stolen or answered a call. Give the players time to inspect the case, speak with witnesses, and choose how they pursue the trail.
How Curator Elian Voss asks
Elian approaches the party directly at the observatory entrance after seeing them arrive.
She offers a modest advance, access to the observatory, and the curator's seal as proof of their authority.

1. The Empty Velvet Case
The observatory's public hall, beneath a dome of cracked blue glass.
Establish urgency, introduce Elian, and let the party investigate the empty case. Clues include star-dust on a lower window ledge, a cut bell rope, and a witness who saw Mara heading below.
NextFollowing the trail leads to the sealed galleries below the observatory. Elian provides a key, but warns that the lower levels have shifted since the tremors began.

2. A Gallery in Pieces
The observatory's abandoned lens gallery, suspended over a deep shaft.
Cross the damaged galleries and reach the lower passage. The party can fight the awakened defenses, bypass them, or use the broken lenses and walkways to create a safe route.
The Shattered GalleryNextBeyond the gallery, the party finds signs that someone opened an old mountain route from the inside. Pell appears nearby and can guide them if treated kindly.

3. The Apprentice's Refuge
A warm cavern threaded with mineral vents and scattered nests.
Meet Mara and hear her reason for taking the relic. Let the party negotiate, challenge her account, or earn Pell's help locating a safe route to the vault.
NextMara leads the party to a sealed stone door, or gives them its location if they part ways. The door opens when the Bastion is brought near.

4. The City Under Stone
An ancient settlement preserved inside the mountain, with empty homes, star-carved lintels, and a central stone plinth.
Explore the buried refuge, identify how its mechanism links to the observatory ward, and decide what arrangement could protect both places. The Warden appears when the party approaches the central plinth.
NextThe Warden invites the party into the inner vault to answer for the Bastion's removal. If they refuse, the refuge's defenses force a confrontation.

5. A Promise in Stone
The inner vault, where the Bastion's miniature walls rise and shift around the party.
Confront the Warden and settle the relic's fate. Combat is possible, but negotiation, a promise to restore the refuge, or a plan that protects both communities can end the crisis without destroying the echo.
The Refuge at the HeartNextReturn to Veyr's Reach or Larkspur with the consequences of the party's choice, then close on the first sign that their decision has changed the mountain.
Behind it
What people believe
Starfall Bastion, a relic held at Veyr's Reach Observatory, has vanished.
The mountain trembles, the observatory's protective ward is failing, and the curator needs capable adventurers to find the relic before the next major quake. The trail leads toward sealed passages beneath the mountain, where someone may still be carrying it.
Background
Starfall Bastion is a legendary, palm-sized fortress carved from blue-black stone and set with a shard of fallen star.
Stories say its bearer can raise a shelter against any storm, but its defenses were built to protect a place, not merely its owner. The relic has recently appeared in the collection of the remote observatory town of Veyr's Reach.
The stakes
If the party delays, the observatory ward may collapse during the next tremor, while the old refuge remains vulnerable.
Taking the Bastion for one community may save it at the expense of another. Destroying or abandoning the relic risks unleashing unstable star-magic throughout the mountain.
Encounters
2The Shattered Gallery
Combat or evasion
A circular observatory gallery with broken glass floors, narrow stone bridges, hanging lenses, and gaps overlooking a deep shaft.
Foes
Two to four Star-splinter Sentinels
One cracked observatory automaton
ComplicationA tremor shifts the walkways during the scene. At the end of each exchange or meaningful action, the GM may change which platforms connect or expose a new safe route.
ScalingFor a smaller or less capable party, use two Sentinels and omit the automaton. For a larger or more capable party, add two Sentinels and make the automaton's attacks threaten multiple connected platforms.
The Refuge at the Heart
Social or combat
An ancient vault concealed inside the mountain, containing a miniature stone refuge, a star-metal plinth, and walls that shift to resemble a vast fortress.
Foes
The Warden in Glass
Three Bastion Shades
ComplicationThe Warden's defenses respond to threats against the Bastion. Characters who parley, identify the refuge's purpose, or offer a credible plan to protect Larkspur can weaken the defenses before the encounter turns violent.
ScalingFor a gentler finale, the Shades fade after one is defeated or persuaded. For a more difficult finale, the Warden can reshape the room once and the Shades return unless the Bastion is addressed.

4Curator Elian Voss
QuestgiverQuestgiver and observatory curator
WantsWants Starfall Bastion returned to the observatory before its protective wards fail. She conceals how much she knows about the relic's last activation.
“The Bastion belongs in the sky-vault. Please bring it back before the next bell, and do not let anyone convince you it is only a trinket.”
Mara Quill
Witness and former observatory apprentice
WantsBelieves the Bastion can save her family and the hamlet of Larkspur from a coming rockslide. She is frightened, stubborn, and willing to risk the relic.
“I didn't steal it to sell. I took it because the mountain is calling through it, and no one else would listen.”
The Warden in Glass
Antagonist and echo of the Bastion's last keeper
WantsWants the Bastion to restore the ancient refuge it once protected, even if doing so destroys the observatory's current wards.
“A fortress is a promise. Tell me, travelers, who did the old promise leave outside?”
Pell, the Ashwing
Wildcard, a soot-feathered cave-dweller
WantsWants to protect the creatures nesting in the warm caverns beneath the observatory and avoid being driven from its home.
“If the mountain cracks, I can guide you through the vents. If it doesn't, I would prefer not to be blamed for the smell.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A star-glass compass that points toward the nearest source of falling-star stone, custom to this adventure.
A repair kit of observatory tools, useful for delicate mechanisms and lenses.
If the party earns the Warden's trust, one character may carry a harmless chip of the Bastion that glows faintly near danger.
On a win
The party secures Starfall Bastion's future and prevents an immediate disaster.
Their choices decide whether the observatory keeps its ward, the old refuge is restored, or both communities must cooperate around a new arrangement. Success is measured by whom they protect and what promise they make, not simply by who carries the relic away.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- Recover Starfall Bastion before the observatory's protective ward collapses.
- If the party fails to recover the Bastion before the next major tremor, the observatory's ward fails and debris damages its outer buildings. The relic remains recoverable, but the town loses shelter and resources.
- Learn why Mara took the relic and secure her cooperation.
- If the party attacks Mara or abandons her without hearing her out, she flees toward Larkspur with the relic. The party must pursue her through unstable tunnels, and Larkspur's residents may distrust them.
- Resolve the Warden's demand or find another way to protect the old refuge.
- If the Warden is destroyed without addressing the refuge, the Bastion's defenses go dormant. The observatory survives, but the people of Larkspur lose the chance to benefit from the ancient shelter.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sharp tremor drops a curtain of loose stones across the shortest route. The party can clear it, climb over it, or lose time finding another way.
- 2The Bastion emits a pulse that makes every nearby metal object briefly point toward the old refuge, revealing the party's direction to anyone watching.
- 3A frightened observatory guard mistakes Mara for an attacker and blocks the party until someone calms the situation or proves their purpose.
- 4Pell's nesting chamber fills with warm, acrid smoke. Helping the Ashwing costs time but earns its guidance through the vents.
- 5The Warden in Glass offers one character a private vision of a loved one safe behind the Bastion's walls, then asks what they would sacrifice to keep that person there.
- 6A second tremor opens a fissure beneath the route. The party must secure one another, find a detour, or leave behind bulky gear.
