The Light That Chooses
The Light That Chooses
“A good spirit will not be wielded. It must choose its bearer.”
— Hook · Relic recovery and moral trial
“Sister Maelin places three pieces of a broken golden weapon on the table. She tells you that a good spirit still lives beneath the valley, but an enemy army is already searching for it. To save thousands of lives, you must find the spirit, earn its trust, and convince it to become part of a new weapon.”
— Hook · Relic recovery and moral trial
Sister Maelin receives the party in a shuttered chapel while distant bells warn of Ashen Covenant activity. She explains that the Dawnbrand fragments are useless without Aurelion, whose sanctuary lies somewhere beneath Dawnfall Pass. She gives the party a fragment, a map marked with an incomplete protective oath and a warning: the spirit must choose the weapon freely.
Sister Maelin Voss
Sister Maelin approaches the party after learning of their reputation for confronting powerful threats. She asks them to meet privately in the chapel and presents the Dawnbrand fragments as proof that the legend is real.

If the party fails, Vaust gains access to a benevolent power capable of destroying cities while claiming to create peace. If the party succeeds but abuses the bond, Aurelion may withdraw, leaving the valley vulnerable and turning the weapon into a source of conflict. If they succeed with humility, the valley gains a guardian and the party gains a powerful ally whose trust must be maintained.
Background Lore
Long before the current age, the valley of Orison was protected by Aurelion, a benevolent spirit born from the first vow made to defend the helpless. Aurelion once inhabited the Dawnbrand, a sacred weapon that ended a demonic invasion without claiming the soul of a single innocent. Centuries later, the Dawnbrand was shattered, and Aurelion withdrew into the Luminous Sepulcher, a hidden sanctuary beneath the valley. Now an enemy warlord seeks to corrupt the spirit and use its power to create a weapon capable of destroying entire settlements. The party must find Aurelion, prove that mortals are still worthy of its trust, and convince it to merge with a new weapon forged from the fragments of the Dawnbrand.
A powerful benevolent spirit lies hidden beneath Dawnfall Pass, and the Ashen Covenant is racing to seize it. The party must reach the spirit's sanctuary, earn its trust through a dangerous trial and persuade it to infuse itself into a weapon capable of defending the valley. The spirit is willing to help those who protect others without seeking control, but it will reject anyone who treats its power as property.
