The Bell Beneath the Tide
The Bell Beneath the Tide
Read aloud
For three nights, the abandoned lighthouse has rung its bell at low tide. This morning, a courier brought a letter to the harbor reeve, written in the hand of Esmir, the archivist who vanished twelve years ago. The letter says only: 'Come before the next tide, or the light will choose for you.'

The hook
Set the scene
Read the hook aloud as the party arrives at Mara Venn's office beside the harbor. Talla waits outside with the sealed letter, unwilling to touch it again. Through the open door, the characters can hear the lighthouse bell sound once despite the calm sea and bright morning.
How Mara Venn asks
Mara Venn requests a private meeting at the harbor office.
She offers payment for a discreet investigation and asks the party to avoid frightening the villagers until they know what is happening.

1. A Letter from the Missing
Mara Venn's harbor office and the quay outside
The party meets Mara and Talla, examines the newest letter, and chooses what to ask before heading out. The letter's paper is salt-stained but dry, and its postscript names the next low tide.
NextTalla points out the reef path used by the old keepers, and the party sets out before the tide turns.

2. The Road That Disappears
A tidal reef and the remains of the old keeper's causeway
The group crosses the reef, navigating the changing water and the scavengers drawn to the lighthouse stores. They can fight, sneak past, bargain, or use local knowledge to find another route.
The Drowned CausewayNextAt the lighthouse base, an open service hatch leads down into the archive, while a lit window above suggests someone is already inside.

3. Names in the Ledger
The lighthouse's lower archive, half flooded and crowded with swollen bookshelves
The party searches the flooded archive for the ledger and evidence of Esmir's last night. The water carries whispers from the records, and the ledger reveals that the keepers recorded names rather than ship sightings on certain nights.
NextThe sound of footsteps overhead leads the party toward the lens room, where Caldus is preparing to shut the light away.

4. The Last Keeper
The upper lighthouse chamber around the cracked lens
Caldus confronts the party at the lens. Characters can expose his actions, persuade him that destroying the lens will endanger Esmir, or fight to keep him from acting.

5. What the Light Remembers
A chamber beneath the lighthouse, lit by a glow moving under the reef
Esmir explains the pact and asks the party to help decide what to do. The light responds to spoken names and remembered promises. The group must act before the tide reaches the archive ceiling.
NextAfter the party's choice, return to Bellwether for the consequences, or follow a new lead revealed by the light.
Behind it
What people believe
Esmir, a former archivist at the Veyr lighthouse, disappeared twelve years ago.
Now letters in Esmir's handwriting are arriving in Bellwether, and the lighthouse bell rings at low tide. Harbor reeve Mara Venn asks the party to investigate, find out whether Esmir is alive, and prevent whatever is causing the strange signs from endangering the village.
Background
Esmir once served as the night archivist at the abandoned Veyr lighthouse, where coastal keepers recorded ships, storms, and unusual lights beyond the reef.
The lighthouse has been dark for twelve years. Recently, its bell has rung at low tide, and people in the nearby village of Bellwether have begun receiving letters in the handwriting of loved ones lost at sea.
The stakes
If the party does nothing, the light may use the village's memories to open a lasting path beneath the reef.
Bellwether could lose more than its dead: the living may forget who they are, while the village's dependence on the old pact becomes public.
Encounters
2The Drowned Causeway
Combat or bypass
A narrow stone causeway crosses sharp reef pools. Slippery rocks, knee-deep channels, and rusted chain posts provide cover but make movement difficult.
Foes
Reef scavengers
A tide-sick watcher
ComplicationThe reef floods in stages. At the end of each round or significant exchange, the GM can make one low section impassable, separating characters or forcing a change of position.
ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused group, use only the tide-sick watcher and let the scavengers flee after a show of force. For a larger or more experienced group, add two scavengers and make the rising water create a second hazard.
The Lens Room Standoff
Social encounter that can become combat
The upper lighthouse room surrounds a massive cracked lens. A spiral stair, hanging chains, and open gallery windows create hazards and escape routes.
Foes
Brother Caldus
Two lighthouse attendants
ComplicationCaldus begins by demanding the party surrender any letters they carry. If negotiations fail, he pulls a lever that shutters the lens and plunges the chamber into darkness.
ScalingFor a smaller group, Caldus is alone and will yield if confronted with evidence of his role in Esmir's dismissal. For a larger or more experienced group, the attendants coordinate to control the narrow stairs rather than fight to the death.
Cast
4Mara Venn
QuestgiverQuestgiver, Bellwether's harbor reeve
WantsWants the village safe and believes Esmir may still be alive, but is concealing that she dismissed Esmir from the lighthouse shortly before their disappearance.
“I need you to find out who is ringing that bell. If it is Esmir, bring them home. If it is not, do not let it learn your names.”
Esmir
Missing archivist and central figure of the quest
WantsWants to protect Esmir and expose the original lighthouse keepers' betrayal, even if the truth disrupts the village.
“The light is not calling the dead. It is asking the living to remember what they promised.”
Talla Reed
Witness, village courier
WantsWants to understand the letters and make amends for delivering them, while fearing the next one may reveal a personal secret.
“I delivered the letters because the handwriting was perfect. I stopped when one addressed me as 'Mother.' My son has been dead for nine years.”
Brother Caldus
Antagonist, former keeper and self-appointed guardian
WantsWants to prevent the light beneath the reef from reaching the village, but believes destroying the lighthouse is the only safe option.
“The bell is a warning. The light beneath the water is a door. Esmir means to open it, and I mean to stop them.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A brass tide-key that opens the lighthouse's flooded archive
A sealed letter written in Esmir's hand, containing a personal message for one party member
On a win
The party reaches Esmir and prevents an uncontrolled release of the light beneath the reef.
They establish a new arrangement, sever the connection, or otherwise resolve the danger in a way that leaves Esmir alive and the village with a chance to choose its future. The letters stop arriving for now, and the lighthouse bell falls silent.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot reach Esmir before the bell's next full ringing.
- The next low tide brings more letters and draws grieving villagers onto the reef, increasing danger and public panic.
- The party fails to stop Caldus from carrying out his plan.
- Caldus destroys the lens, stopping the immediate supernatural manifestations but trapping Esmir in the flooded lower chamber and erasing evidence of the keepers' pact.
- The party publicly accuses the wrong person or reveals private contents of the letters without consent.
- The village blames the party for the disaster, and Mara withdraws her support. The group must seek another way to reach the lighthouse or earn back local trust.
Complications (d6)
- 1The tide rises early and cuts off the return route across the reef, forcing the group to find higher ground or wait for the next ebb.
- 2A letter addressed to one of the adventurers appears in Talla's satchel, written in a familiar hand and containing a precise detail from their past.
- 3Caldus's warning bell draws a crowd from Bellwether, who arrive convinced the party has come to destroy the lighthouse.
- 4A cracked lens throws false lighthouse beams across the rocks, making safe paths appear dangerous and dangerous paths appear clear.
- 5A drowned keeper's shade offers the party a useful clue, but asks them to speak aloud the name of someone they have lost.
- 6The bell rings three times without anyone touching it. Each ring causes one nearby person's voice to briefly sound like someone they miss.
