Prelude Session 5: Siege at Ember Pass

A narrow pass, a threatened supply train, and a route known too well.

Read aloud

The gorge narrows around your wagons, their axles groaning over black stone. A war-cry erupts below, arrows hiss from the crags, and boulders thunder down behind you. Hold the line, or Dawnvale's stores will burn beneath the mountain.

Objectives

  1. 1Defend the resupplied caravan through Ember Pass.
  2. 2Secure the crystal bound for the Temple of First Light.
  3. 3Expose the information breach.
  4. 4Limit the warband's knowledge of the defenders.Optional

The clock

The raiders press their attack while the caravan remains trapped in the gorge. Each round of delay gives them more time to reach the marked crate or split the wagons. Once Rukhar's warband withdraws, the party has until the caravan leaves the pass to question witnesses and secure the evidence.

The hook

Set the scene

The caravan enters the throat of Ember Pass beneath a pale, clouded sky. Black stone scrapes the wagon rims, and the air smells of iron dust and horse sweat. Mara Vey walks beside the lead wagon, checking each team as the road bends out of sight. A war-cry rises from below. Arrows slash across the road, then a boulder strikes behind the last wagon and sends a shudder through the gorge.

How Mara Vey asks

Mara Vey briefs the party as the caravan enters the pass, then asks them to protect the marked cargo and investigate how the raiders knew the route.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“A teamster heard the raiders shouting the names of wagon loads before the first arrow was loosed.”
2“The Goroth have been watching the road for days, though no sentry remembers seeing them.”
3“The temple crystal is wrapped in pale cloth and marked with the same seal as other Dawnvale supplies.”
4“Someone has been asking at roadside stops when the caravan would pass through Ember Pass.”

    1. The Gorge Closes

The narrowest stretch of Ember Pass, where black stone walls rise over the road and the caravan cannot easily turn around.

Introduce the vulnerable caravan and give the party a brief chance to position themselves, check the wagons, or ask Mara about the marked cargo. The first volley and rockfall begin as the party reaches the gorge's tightest bend.

    The First Volley

NextWhen the immediate attack breaks or the raiders gain the crate, the remaining wagons lurch forward toward a sheltered bend where the party can regroup and search.

    2. The Marked Crate

A sheltered bend below a loose-rock shelf, with the caravan halted and the canvas-covered marked crate exposed.

Reveal that the attackers targeted a specific marked crate and that route notes recovered from a scout match the caravan's schedule. Let the party inspect the cargo, question witnesses, and compare evidence with Tovin's dispatch copy.

    The Crate and the Clue

NextAs the party establishes what was stolen or preserved, Tovin's explanation and the matching notes point toward a deliberate disclosure, bringing the question of trust to the fore.

    3. The Price of a Schedule

Beside the recovered cargo as the caravan moves cautiously out of the gorge, with Mara keeping the teamsters calm and Halwen guarding the crystal.

Question Tovin, weigh the evidence, and decide whether to detain him, press him for the intermediary's identity, or keep the caravan moving. Sister Halwen confirms the crystal's destination and asks the party to ensure it reaches Dawnvale.

NextMara takes the party's warning and the surviving evidence, then the road opens ahead toward Dawnvale as the caravan resumes its journey.

Behind it

What people believe

The caravan is only two days from Dawnvale when a Goroth War Clans warband ambushes it in Ember Pass.

Background

Ember Pass is a narrow black-stone gorge on the final two-day road to Dawnvale.

The stakes

If the warband takes the supplies or crystal, Dawnvale loses resources intended for its preparations.

Encounters

2
  • The First Volley

    Combat

A winding gorge with steep crags, scattered black-stone boulders, two wagon-wide stretches, and a narrow ledge above the road. Climbing the crags is possible but exposed.

    Foes

    • Goroth outriders, use suitable low-level skirmisher statistics

    • Goroth bow raiders, use suitable low-level ranged statistics

    • Rukhar, use a custom raid-captain feature set built on a level-appropriate martial foe

ComplicationBoulders and arrows threaten the caravan while raiders try to seize the marked supply crate. The party can spend actions helping endangered teamsters or moving wagons, but doing so gives the raiders more time to reach the cargo.

ScalingFor a small or inexperienced party, reduce the number of active raiders and have the initial rockfall block the rear approach. For a larger or well-equipped party, add a second wave from a side ledge, but keep Rukhar's force divided between fighting and stealing the crate. Rukhar should seek cover or retreat when badly hurt rather than fight to the death.

  • The Crate and the Clue

    Exploration

The caravan's stalled wagons sit beneath a shelf of loose rock. The marked crate is strapped under a canvas cover, while the scouts' retreat path climbs through narrow scree.

    Foes

    • One or two Goroth scouts using suitable low-level skirmisher statistics, if they were not captured or driven off

ComplicationThe party must keep the remaining wagons moving while identifying where the attackers knew to strike. A successful search can reveal the raiders' route notes; questioning Tovin or comparing the notes with his dispatch copy exposes the leak.

ScalingThis scene can be resolved without combat through searching, conversation, or careful observation. If the party is depleted, the scouts flee when confronted. If the party wants a challenge, one scout attempts to snatch the route notes and escape.

  • Mara Vey

    QuestgiverFaction contact and caravan coordinator

WantsMara wants the caravan and its sacred cargo delivered intact, and wants the route leak reported before more travelers are targeted.

“They knew our turns, our pace, even which wagon carried the temple shipment. Find who told them, and I will put your warning in the hands of Dawnvale's temple authorities.”
  • Rukhar

    Antagonist and Goroth raid captain

WantsRukhar seeks a successful raid that will strengthen his standing among the warband, and he wants to learn whether the caravan is carrying unusually valuable cargo.

“You came all this way to guard crates? Then let us see how well you hold a road.”
  • Tovin Brask

    Caravan quartermaster and witness

WantsTovin wants to avoid blame for selling caravan information and is frightened that the leak will be traced back to him.

“I sent the schedule to a runner who said the road needed clearing. I never thought the warband would strike the wagons.”
  • Sister Halwen

    Temple courier and witness

WantsSister Halwen is responsible for delivering the radiant crystal to the Temple of First Light and fears its loss could compromise preparations in Dawnvale.

“The crystal is warm even through the wrapping. Please, do not let them carry it into the mountains.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Award XP for defeated or overcome foes and meaningful objective completion using the table's 5E advancement approach. This adventure does not assume a fixed XP total.
Gold: A modest caravan-defense payment agreed with Mara, suggested range 50-100 gp for the party, adjusted to the table's economy.
In the story: The party earns the Temple of First Light a timely warning and advances the investigation into the recurring route leaks.
Standing: Mara Vey and her contacts in Dawnvale regard the party as reliable protectors. If Rukhar escapes, the Goroth War Clans may also take notice, though that attention is a future story consequence rather than an immediate reward.

Items

  • The recovered radiant crystal, a temple-bound story item with no assumed combat properties.

  • A copy of the raiders' route notes, useful evidence linking the ambush to the information leak.

On a win

The caravan clears the pass with its essential supplies intact, and the radiant crystal is returned to Sister Halwen for delivery to the Temple of First Light.

What it leaves open

If Rukhar escapes, he can report the party's capabilities to his allies, bringing them to the attention of the Goroth War Clans at a future Great Moot if the table wants to pursue that thread.
Tovin's intermediary remains unidentified. The route leak may connect to the information breaches the party has encountered since the Golden Hart Inn.
Mara carries the warning and, if the radiant crystal is recovered, the party's report to the Temple of First Light in Dawnvale.

If it fails

If too many wagons are destroyed or abandoned, the party fails to keep the supply train intact.
The caravan reaches Dawnvale with fewer stores, and local preparations must be diverted to replace the lost provisions.
If the marked crate is lost or the route leak is not exposed.
Mara can still warn the temple that a raid occurred, but without the crystal or credible evidence of the leak, the warning is less specific and harder to act on.
If Rukhar escapes with enough information to identify the party.
Rukhar reports that capable adventurers defended the caravan. If the table wishes to carry this thread forward, the party draws attention at a later Goroth Great Moot.
If the party accuses Tovin without obtaining evidence or allows him to disappear before he can be questioned.
Tovin may be detained for questioning, but the source behind the leak remains unknown and future journeys may still be compromised.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A boulder wedges one wagon sideways across the gorge, narrowing the only safe route until the party clears it or finds a way around.
  2. 2A frightened draft horse breaks its traces and bolts toward the raiders, dragging a supply sled behind it.
  3. 3A second volley targets the wagon carrying the marked crate, forcing the characters to choose between pursuing attackers and shielding the cargo.
  4. 4Dust and grit pour from a fresh crack in the gorge wall, briefly obscuring sight and warning that another rockfall may follow.
  5. 5A wounded Goroth scout drops a strip of route notes bearing the caravan's departure time and a distinctive ink mark also found on Tovin's dispatch copy.
  6. 6Rukhar signals a retreat while two raiders attempt to free a captured teamster, dividing the party's attention at a critical moment.
