The Opening

Every game console in the suburb turns on at the same moment and speaks with the voice of a dead man. He names streets, houses, and secrets no living stranger should know, then says, “The first rifts were built here.” Before the broadcast ends, he gives your group one address and begs you to arrive before the next memory plays.

Set the Scene

Begin with the characters in an ordinary part of the Lyoss suburb: a living room, repair shop, community center, or roadside diner. Every visible console, phone, and public display activates simultaneously. Elias Venn's voice describes an event each character remembers differently, then provides Mara Quill's address as the only safe location. On arrival, Mara explains that Elias died eleven years ago and that she has spent the last week finding his memories in devices that were never connected to one another.

Mara Quill

Mara Quill contacts the characters through a public console, then meets them at her cluttered repair shop. She is direct, exhausted, and unwilling to explain how much she already knows until the characters agree to investigate the address Elias provided.

Stakes

If the characters fail, the first engineered rift will become permanent and the suburbs of Lyoss will be used as a template for opening more. Residents may lose their identities to borrowed memories, while the officials responsible rewrite the disaster as a natural phenomenon. If the characters succeed, Lyoss survives but its history, institutions, and relationships are permanently altered.

Ticking Clock·The broadcasts occur in a fixed sequence. After the fourth major broadcast, Director Rusk will activate the central rift. The characters have roughly one night to reach the laboratory, though each delay can advance the sequence and worsen the consequences.

Background Lore

Lyoss is a modern suburb built over the remains of an abandoned research district. Decades ago, experimental consoles, home networks, and municipal signal towers were installed throughout the neighborhood as part of a program officially described as entertainment infrastructure. The program ended after the first rifts appeared, and the surviving records were sealed or rewritten. Now every console in the suburb is broadcasting the memories of Elias Venn, a dead systems engineer who insists the rifts were not accidents.

What the World Knows

A dead systems engineer named Elias Venn has begun speaking through every game console in a Lyoss suburb. His memories reveal that the first rifts may have been engineered, not accidental. The characters must follow the broadcast through haunted homes and a buried research facility before officials erase the evidence or another rift opens.
