The Beacon Beneath the River
The Beacon Beneath the River
“A dead beacon, a river that remembers, and a buried mind asking to be heard.”
— Hook · Investigation and crisis prevention
“The river has begun flowing uphill, and every night a dead beacon shines beneath the water. Mara Venn offers you a sealed map and three days to discover who extinguished the western tower before Bellwether Ford is swallowed by a flood that has not yet fallen.”
— Hook · Investigation and crisis prevention
Mara Venn receives the party in a locked records room beneath Bellwether Ford's council hall. She shows them a map marked with three locations: the ruined western beacon, the flooded ferry, and a forgotten entrance beneath an abandoned quarry. She explains that the council will deny the crisis until the party has proof, then gives them a brass token bearing the Dawnwarden symbol. Before they leave, Nella Quill arrives soaked and shaking, claiming that the river spoke in her mother's voice and begged the party not to trust the beacon keeper.
Mara Venn
Mara approaches the party through a trusted innkeeper or local contact, then arranges a private meeting in the council records room. She is polite, direct, and clearly withholding part of the story.

If the party succeeds, the settlement survives but must confront the truth about the power that sustained it.
Background Lore
For generations, the river settlement of Bellwether Ford has relied on an ancient chain of beacon towers called the Dawnwardens. The towers once guided travelers through the Shale March and kept a buried magical fault dormant beneath the valley. Three weeks ago, the western beacon went dark. Since then, livestock have vanished, travelers report hearing voices beneath the road, and pale lights have appeared along the river at night. The settlement council believes the tower was sabotaged by the Ashen League, a band of smugglers and political agitators who have recently moved into the hills.
Bellwether Ford is threatened by a chain of supernatural failures. The western Dawnwarden beacon has gone dark, the river is behaving impossibly, and travelers have vanished along the Shale March. Mara Venn, a council archivist, believes the Ashen League sabotaged the beacon to destabilize the settlement. The characters must investigate the ruined tower, restore the warding system, and stop the Ashen League before the valley floods.
