The Opening

The Deepwell Corporation has bought another mining camp, this time paying enough to make the owners rich and the workers desperate. Three miners vanished after reporting blue lights beneath the Cinderhook shaft, and the only survivor claims the corporation is hiding something below the earth. Find out what Deepwell is buying before the next camp disappears.

Set the Scene

Rain lashes the windows of the Ashfall Gazette as Mara Venn spreads a map across a cluttered desk. Red circles mark six mining camps, each recently purchased by Deepwell Corporation. She explains that Cinderhook Camp was emptied three nights ago, but one miner escaped and is hiding in a coal shed nearby. Before the party leaves, Mara shows them a scrap of blue-black crystal found in a sealed company crate and warns that Deepwell's lawyers will complete the basin-wide transfer in less than two weeks.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn contacts the party through a coded newspaper notice and brings them to the Ashfall Gazette after dark. She offers cash, legal assistance, and access to the Gazette's printing press in exchange for proof that can withstand Deepwell's lawyers and company guards.

Stakes

If the party fails, Deepwell will legally control the Ashfall Basin and activate the Lithic Heart, draining the region's groundwater and natural warmth. Thousands of miners and settlers may be displaced, killed, or forced into company labor. If the party succeeds, the basin remains free but the ancient engine becomes a dangerous secret that other powers may seek.

Ticking Clock·The Deepwell Corporation's land transfer becomes legally binding in twelve days. The Lithic Heart will be activated at midnight on the final day, giving the party a clear deadline even if they reach the engine earlier.

Background Lore

The Ashfall Basin was opened thirty years ago after prospectors discovered silver, coal, and veins of strange blue-black crystal beneath the mountains. Mining camps grew into rough frontier settlements connected by narrow-gauge rail, telegraph lines, and wagon roads. In recent months, the Deepwell Corporation has bought nearly every independent mine in the region, paying far above market value and ordering workers to abandon productive shafts. The company claims it is consolidating operations, but its surveyors have been mapping bedrock, aquifers, and ancient tunnels instead of extracting ore.

What the World Knows

The Deepwell Corporation is buying mining camps throughout the Ashfall Basin for unexplained reasons. Workers are being dismissed, tunnels are being sealed, and anyone who asks questions is threatened or paid off. The characters are hired to investigate the disappearance of miners at Cinderhook Camp, uncover what Deepwell is hiding, and stop the corporation if its actions endanger the region.
