The Root That Remembers

A missing farmer's dreams lead beneath an orchard where the roots remember a thousand years of anger.

Read aloud

Artin says the roots beneath Towas's farm are calling him by name, and each night the voice sounds more like his missing friend. The latest dream showed Towas asking Artin to cut the oldest root beneath the orchard. Artin wants you to find Towas before he acts on a message he no longer trusts.

The clock

Each night, Vaelthorn gains more influence over the damaged seal. After three nights, the network produces an aggressive growth beyond the farm and the Fraying Seal encounter gains one additional hazard or guardian. This clock advances when the party takes a long rest or spends a full day away from the investigation.

The hook

Set the scene

Artin meets the party at the edge of Towas's farm after sunset. The orchard's leaves turn toward the visitors despite the still air, and pale fungus glows between the furrows. Artin describes the dream and admits he cannot tell whether the voice is Towas's. Mera Pell watches from her porch, clutching a sheaf of leaves that have grown in the shape of a closed eye.

How Artin asks

Artin approaches the party at a local inn, shrine, or trailhead.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“The leaves in Towas's orchard turn toward anyone who speaks his name.”
2“A fire burned underground as well as across the farm, though no one saw flames below the soil.”
3“Artin used to be an ordinary farmhand until he started mapping stars that cannot be seen from this region.”
4“A traveler claims the strange growths were present long before the fire, but nobody paid them much attention.”
5“The massacre at Six Towers happened almost two years ago, and some say the dead were never properly laid to rest.”

    1. A Message with Two Voices

Towas's farmhouse and the edge of the orchard, after sunset.

Artin gives the party the conflicting dream details. Mera can point out that the leaves react to certain phrases and that the oldest altered plants predate the recent fire. A Insight or Nature check notices the dream's request to cut the root is inconsistent with Towas's habit of protecting the orchard.

NextThe party finds a line of pale fungus and scorched roots leading from the orchard to a sinkhole behind the fields.

    2. The Listening Orchard

Towas's mutated orchard, where smoke-blackened trunks stand among plants that subtly turn toward the characters.

The party tracks the unnatural growth through the orchard. They can quiet, avoid, or fight the guardians. Clues include a root scar shaped like branching stars and a dead patch whose scorch marks point downward, toward the underground network.

    The Listening Orchard

NextA root-covered sinkhole opens into a crawlspace. Following the living roots leads deeper, while a successful DC 13 Nature or Survival check identifies a safer route.

    3. The Memory Beneath the Soil

A subterranean lattice of roots, damp earth, fungal shelves, and dimly glowing threads.

The party navigates shifting root passages and encounters evidence of the old prison: carved markings from the druids who sealed Vaelthorn, a root burned from within, and a fading memory of Towas choosing to enter the network. A character who spends time studying the memory can tell Towas entered willingly.

NextThe root passages converge on a hollow where the damaged seal pulses with light. Vaelthorn's voice offers to show the party the truth.

    4. The Prisoner's Offer

A root chamber around the cracked binding, with a faint silhouette of Towas visible inside the living lattice.

Vaelthorn attempts to persuade the party that the prison is cruelty and the settlement is the true danger. Towas can send a brief, authentic signal through a particular star-shaped pattern in the roots. The party can question both voices, test the seal, and choose whether to bargain, reinforce it, or risk a different solution.

NextIf the party rejects Vaelthorn's offer or starts repairing the seal, the guardians rise and the network begins to shift.

    5. Holdfast

The underground seal chamber, where a web of roots surrounds a luminous, cracked knot.

The party must hold the chamber while stabilizing the seal. A character can use an action to make a Nature, Arcana, or Religion check; two successes before two failures secure the binding. The party may instead use another clear plan, such as a ritual, bargain, or carefully placed physical brace. Attacking the knot risks worsening Towas's condition.

    The Fraying Seal

NextWith the seal stabilized, the roots relax and form a passage back to the farm. If the party fails, the network continues to spread and the outcome becomes a desperate retreat or renewed attempt.

Behind it

What people believe

Towas, a farmer near the settlement, vanished after a fire swept through his orchard.

Background

More than a thousand years ago, the radical druid Vaelthorn bound himself to the roots, fungi, and mycelium beneath the region, intending to halt every road and settlement.

The stakes

If Vaelthorn escapes, he will use the network to lash out at roads, farms, and settlements, while Towas may be lost or transformed.

Encounters

2
  • The Listening Orchard

    Combat

A sloping orchard of mutated trees, waist-high brambles, and patches of pale fungus. Trees provide half cover. A character can use an action and succeed on a DC 13 Nature check to quiet one patch of spore growth for the encounter.

    Foes

    • 2 Rootbound Huskers, custom plant guardians using the statistics of appropriate low-CR plant creatures

    • 1 Spore-Speaker, custom fungus creature using the statistics of a low-CR spellcaster or plant creature

ComplicationWhen a creature is reduced to half its hit points or fewer, nearby roots constrict. The creature must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn. Cutting or burning a root ends the effect on one creature.

ScalingFor a smaller or lower-level party, use one Rootbound Husker and no Spore-Speaker. For a larger or higher-level party, add one Rootbound Husker. These are custom reskins; use published 5E stat blocks as a baseline and do not treat the names as official creatures.

  • The Fraying Seal

    Combat

A hollow below the farm where thick roots form a web around a glowing, cracked knot. The center is difficult terrain. Fungal shelves rise 10 feet above the floor and offer half cover. Striking the central knot damages the seal and should be a meaningful choice, not a required tactic.

    Foes

    • 1 Rootbound Warden, a custom elite plant guardian

    • 2 Rootbound Huskers, custom plant guardians

ComplicationAt the end of each round, the network shifts one marked safe area, forcing characters standing there to move 10 feet or fall prone. Characters can prevent the shift for one round with a successful DC 14 Nature or Arcana check.

ScalingFor a party of three characters or level 3 characters, remove one Husker and reduce the Warden's hit points by one quarter. For a party of five characters or level 5 characters, add one Husker. Use suitable low-CR 5E stat blocks as baselines; these variants are custom.

  • Towas

Ally, a farmer sustained within the root network and the living brace in the damaged seal.

WantsKeep the prison sealed, even if that means remaining bound beneath the farm.

“The roots are holding him, but they are holding me too. Do not mistake my silence for surrender.”
  • Artin

QuestgiverQuestgiver and witness, a novice Circle of Stars druid who receives distorted dreams.

WantsUnderstand the visions and find a way to help Towas without unleashing whatever is imprisoned.

“I saw stars being born and dying. The dream says Towas wants me to cut the roots, but that is not the only thing it says.”
  • Vaelthorn

Antagonist, the ancient druid imprisoned in the local ecosystem.

WantsEscape the prison and force the region back into wilderness, beginning with the settlements and roads that sustain civilization.

“A road is a wound. A town is a spreading sickness. Let the wild close over every human mark.”
  • Mera Pell

Witness, a neighboring farmer whose mutated plants have begun reacting to the network's disturbance.

WantsProtect her family and learn whether the strange growths on her land are dangerous.

“The leaves turn toward you when you speak. Whatever this is, it has been listening longer than any of us.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Award XP appropriate to a medium 5E adventure for the party's level, including negotiation, investigation, and successfully preserving the seal. Do not award XP only for defeating creatures.
Gold: 75 gp from the farm cooperative, plus up to 25 gp in salvage and donations if the party protects the orchard.
In the story: Artin offers access to his research on the strange root network and a personal favor. Towas, if reached, provides a firsthand account of the prison and its history.
Standing: The local farmers and settlement leaders grant the party a favorable reputation and practical help. If they preserve the prison without harming Towas, nearby druids may also regard them as trusted allies.

Items

  • Artin's Star Chart, a custom nonmagical map of constellations and dream symbols that grants advantage on one future check to interpret a related network vision, then becomes ordinary notes.

  • One potion of healing supplied by the local healer.

On a win

The party separates Towas's authentic warnings from Vaelthorn's manipulation and stabilizes the root prison.

What it leaves open

Artin's recovered notes show that the root network has other distant nodes, one of which recently carried a pulse unlike anything from the forest.
The Six Towers ritual left a trace in the network. The party may investigate who collected the souls and what the cult intended to summon or empower.
If Towas remains bound, the party can seek a safer replacement for his portion of the seal. If he is freed, the damaged prison may require a new guardian or a different means of containment.

If it fails

If the party fails to reach the seal before the final dream cycle, Vaelthorn gains enough influence to lash out through the network.
Vaelthorn forces a brief breach, and several nearby mutated plants become aggressive. The settlement remains standing, but guards must defend the farms while the party regroups.
If the party cuts or destroys the central root knot without stabilizing it, the prison weakens and Towas's portion of the binding is severed.
Towas remains bound and loses the ability to send clear messages for a time. Artin can still study the network, but the party has missed the chance to ease Towas's burden.
If the party accepts Vaelthorn's dream-message as Towas's unambiguous instruction and attempts to free him, the seal partially opens.
Artin blames himself for acting on a false dream, while Vaelthorn gains a foothold in his visions. The party can still pursue the antagonist, but must first restore Artin's trust and help him separate genuine signals from interference.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A patch of pale, heatless fungus releases a cloud of spores. A creature that breathes them hears a personal memory spoken in Vaelthorn's voice and has disadvantage on its next Wisdom check to judge whether a dream-message is genuine.
  2. 2The root path shifts beneath the party. The group must spend 10 minutes finding the route again, or arrive at the next scene separated by a narrow root wall.
  3. 3A mutated thorn-vine catches a pack or loose item. Recovering it requires a successful DC 13 Strength or Dexterity check; on a failure, the item remains caught until the vine is cut or calmed.
  4. 4A dead root briefly carries a voice from the Six Towers massacre. It reveals a concrete clue about the ritual's timing, but the sound draws the attention of nearby root-bound guardians.
  5. 5A wave of network pressure causes one character to relive a dream of Towas calling for help. The character must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or spend their next turn moving toward the nearest visible root opening.
  6. 6Mera's livestock blunder into the mutated growth. The party can rescue them with a quick rescue effort, but doing so gives Vaelthorn time to strengthen one root barrier ahead.
