The Root

The Root is a vertical labyrinth of soot-stained stone built directly into the cliffs beneath Castle Blackstone. It exists purely to feed the fortress above with obsidian and iron. Buildings are stacked atop one another, connected by iron catwalks and rickety ladders. The sun rarely reaches the lowest tiers, leaving the district in a perpetual twilight lit by the orange glow of forge-fires and the dim glimmer of bioluminescent mine moss.

Buildings are stacked atop one another, connected by iron catwalks and rickety ladders. The sun rarely reaches the lowest tiers, leaving the district in a perpetual twilight lit by the orange glow of forge-fires and the dim glimmer of bioluminescent mine moss.

The air is a heavy, greasy fog of industrial soot and sulfur. Constant rhythmic hammering from the smithies vibrates through the stone floors of every tenement. The residents move with a weary, heads-down pace, their skin stained a permanent charcoal gray. There is a palpable, simmering heat that rises from the lower vents, making the narrow alleys feel claustrophobic and suffocating even in the dead of winter.

The Shard-Sickness

Workers are developing calcified lungs that turn into jagged glass. This slow petrification is depleting the workforce and causing panic, but Harlen Vane suppresses the news to prevent the High District from replacing him.

Quota Escalation

Castle Blackstone has tripled its obsidian demands. To meet these numbers, Warden Graves has begun conscripting children from the local taverns, leading to a potential riot at the Smothered Hearth.
