The Fate of the Nova’s Heart

Read Aloud

The last shard of the Nova’s Heart hangs above the smashed altar, pulsing green and gold. Six broken conduits whip sparks through the crystal pillars as the chamber shakes beneath your feet. Speak together, act together, or watch the new magic die here.

The Scene

NEUTRALRitual negotiation with the living NexusBase DC 18

Stakes The party is not merely deciding what the Nova’s Heart does; they are deciding who may use magic, what magic must cost, and whether Arcanterra has a future.

NPC Goal

The living Nexus wants a clear set of limits for the new magic, but it cannot choose those limits for the party.

Leverage

The chamber responds to unity. The party's spoken promises can stabilize the conduits, while contradiction makes the crystal pillars lash out.

Player Approaches
  • Name the intended future of magic in plain language.
  • Assign each character a specific conduit or responsibility.
  • Invoke a shared memory, oath, sacrifice, or law.
  • Use the shard's pulse as proof that the party's words are being heard.
  • Concede one power the new order must never possess.
NPC Gambits
  • Study the conduits with Arcana to reveal their schools and rune paths.
  • Place the Nova’s Heart shard on the central plinth.
  • Declare one unanimous rite: Reforging, Destruction, or Claiming.
  • For Reforging, cast six different schools of magic in one round and make Arcana checks.
  • For Destruction, each hero sacrifices hit points and makes a Constitution save.
  • For Claiming, each hero states an edict of ten words or fewer and makes a Persuasion or Religion check.
  • Channel the final surge with a group Constitution save.
NPC Reactions
  • A clear shared purpose locks one conduit and grants advantage on the next relevant check.
  • A selfish demand makes the nearest pillar flare and reveals a dangerous consequence of that choice.
  • A character who admits what they fear hears their own voice echoed from the shard.
  • Contradictory declarations count as a failure unless the party resolves the disagreement before the next exchange.
  • A promise that includes a meaningful limitation causes all visible rune-tracks to brighten.
