Fortifying Ravenbrook Keep
Fortifying Ravenbrook Keep
Read Aloud
The map shows three ways into Ravenbrook Keep: the battered West Gate, the crumbling North Walls, and flooded fields cut by hidden paths. Six leyward stones, 150 militia, and three specialists wait beside the table. Outside, horns answer one another in the dark, and the broken dawn is almost here.
The Scene
NEUTRALStrategic negotiationBase DC 15Stakes The keep has one hour before the siege begins; a poor allocation turns one approach into an immediate breach and costs lives before the real battle starts.
One hour of in-world planning; 20 to 30 minutes at the table.
Captain Maelis Thorn wants every approach defended, but secretly wants the West Gate reinforced because her family holds the gatehouse.
The specialists know exactly how to make one sector hold, but each will abandon the plan if treated as a spare pair of hands.
- Assign 50 militia to each approach.
- Place exactly two leyward stones at each approach for the strongest defense.
- Send the dwarven runesmith to the North Walls for +2 to Athletics checks there.
- Send the elven trapmaster to the Flooded Outer Fields for one extra trap damage die.
- Use the gatehouse narrows to delay battering rams.
- Use the flood sluice to force attackers into trapped lanes.
- Spend 10 minutes assigning one resource group.
- Make an Intelligence (Arcana) check to attune stones at the West Gate, DC 15 per stone.
- Make a Strength (Athletics) check to embed stones along the North Walls, DC 14 per wall segment.
- Make a Wisdom (Survival) check to place stones at field trap nodes, DC 13 per node.
- Make a Charisma check to settle disputes between Captain Mara Venn, the dwarven runesmith, and the elven trapmaster.
- Reassign one militia group once, but lose the next placement window.
- Captain Maelis Thorn becomes FRIENDLY when the party protects the militia from needless losses.
- The dwarven runesmith becomes HOSTILE if ordered away from the North Walls after agreeing to fortify them.
- The elven trapmaster becomes FRIENDLY when given authority over the field defenses and enough time to prepare.
