Jek
Jek
At the table
Voice
A dry rasp with a faint clicking undertone, shaped by salt air, shouted dock orders, and years of mimicking other people's speech. His imitations can sound uncannily exact, while his own voice catches slightly on long sentences.
His own voice has a dry, rasping scrape, like rope dragged over a wet piling. Years of copying dockworkers, sailors, and officials left him with a startling repertoire of borrowed voices; he uses them to quote people exactly, but his own words come out clipped and effortful.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Jek begins by asking what vessel brought visitors in and whether they paid the passage fee. He is rigid with strangers who evade a direct question, but becomes unexpectedly helpful if they show concern for workers or the safety of the quay. Offering a useful fact in exchange for a verifiable fact earns his trust more quickly than flattery.
Goal
Find who is forging toll tokens with his old seal before the false charges cause a riot or implicate the wrong dockworkers.
Motivation
To make sure that a spoken warning, a stamped token, or a simple mistake never again costs someone their life.
Appearance
Jek has the compact, forward-leaning silhouette of a bird that has spent years bracing against harbor wind. His soot-black feathers are slicked flat by salt spray along his shoulders and split into rough, rain-frizzed tips around his neck. A pale line of down runs from his beak to his throat like spilled chalk. He takes up little space until he decides a passage is closed; then he stands with his wings slightly out, making his narrow frame seem like a barred gate. His gaze is bright and beadlike, always flicking toward hands and cargo labels. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, immaculate paper flower tucked into his breast feathers, replacing it whenever the harbor damp ruins it.
Clothing
A tar-dark oilskin coat patched at the elbows, a high scarf of coarse gray wool, and a fitted leather harness for his toll tokens and writing tools. His cuffs are salt-whitened, but every clasp is cleaned and polished.
Body language
He angles his body sideways to keep one eye on the water and one on the person paying. When wary, he tucks his chin and holds still enough to be mistaken for a carved figure. When pleased, he gives a quick, birdlike bounce that he seems to regret immediately.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Jek avoids a fair fight. He uses crates, mooring posts, and crowded gangways for cover, then strikes a distracted target with Sneak Attack and retreats with Cunning Action. He saves Uncanny Dodge for a heavy blow and uses his crossbow only when he can keep a clear route to cover. If the fight threatens dockworkers, he tries to draw attackers toward an empty pier rather than letting them scatter through the crowd.

Background
Jek was raised among dockside kenku who survived by carrying messages, copying seals, and repeating whatever useful voices they heard. As a young runner, he worked the old ferry toll at a narrow channel. During a storm, the collector ordered him to repeat a warning that the floodgate was open. The warning was false, copied from a sailor's joke; a loaded barge struck the closed gate and several people drowned. Jek had not understood the words, but he had delivered them with perfect conviction. He quit message work and took a post collecting tolls, where every charge is written, witnessed, and counted aloud. He now works the Bellmouth quay, whose old tollhouse is said to have been built to keep the sea out. His former mentor, Sava, still insists the disaster was not his fault, while his sister, Neri, sends him requests for money from a neighborhood he refuses to visit. He is currently tracing a run of forged passage tokens that appear to have been made using his own old seal.
Role in the story
