At the table

Voice

A dry, gritty voice, as if shaped by years of breathing pollen and speaking through a tight jaw. Its words carry the measured cadence of someone accustomed to reciting testimony aloud, but the old shrine's Common has left a few phrases stiff and formal. Its laugh is a rasping scrape, abruptly cut short.

Phrakvili speaks fluent Common learned from generations of captors, pilgrims, and trespassers. Its phrasing is old-fashioned but direct, with clipped consonants and an occasional pause as if checking each word against a remembered oath. It speaks of centuries as if they were a list of practical events.

Speech patterns

Uses short, declarative sentences when recounting history, then asks long, carefully balanced questions.
Calls violence a consequence and refuses to call it justice.
Repeats a visitor's chosen word, such as 'mercy' or 'revenge,' as though weighing it.
When angered, speaks with greater force and sharper consonants rather than lowering its voice.

How to play them

Phrakvili meets strangers with a formal account of the old imprisonment and asks what they believe descendants owe the dead. It responds well to specific acts of repair, especially protection of the forest edge, but rejects easy apologies. A group can earn its cooperation by acknowledging both the ancient wrong and the present harm caused by the spreading curse.

Goal

Force the descendants of the shrine-builders to acknowledge the imprisonment and help contain the forest's spread, without surrendering its claim to remember what was done.

Motivation

To make the living remember the cost of the shrine's cruelty, while privately trying to keep its grief from destroying the forest it once guarded.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Human-sized and unmistakably fey, Phrakvili stands with the patient stillness of a tree deciding whether to fall. Its skin is deep umber, roughened into fine, barklike ridges by centuries of wind, rain, and blood-red pollen; narrow seams between those ridges glow like damp crimson roots. Its jaw is broad and slightly too long, with square, red-stained teeth that show even when its mouth is shut. It eats berries one at a time, crushing each with deliberate, audible clicks, and laughs with a dry rasp that sounds like a branch dragged over stone. Its movements are economical until it turns, when its shoulders and head pivot at subtly different speeds. The unexpected detail: Phrakvili keeps a tiny, carefully tended patch of blue meadow flowers growing in a cracked clay cup at its belt.

Clothing

A weather-stiff mantle woven from dark reeds and strips of old shrine cloth, fastened with a blunt wooden peg. Its hem is stained red with pollen. A small clay cup hangs from its belt.

Body language

Phrakvili holds its shoulders square and its hands open, as if presenting evidence. It turns its head a fraction before its torso follows. At a painful memory, its fingers press into its own bark-ridged palm until red sap beads there. It watches mouths while people speak, especially their teeth.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Phrakvili is patient enough to hear a stranger's full defense, yet stubborn enough to treat the defense as evidence against them. It can be tender with living plants and merciless toward people who dismiss the old imprisonment. In calm moments it is precise and almost hospitable; when grief takes hold, it becomes theatrical, offering terrible choices as if conducting a ritual. It wants acknowledgment, but distrusts anyone who offers it too quickly.

Alignment
Neutral, with a vindictive streak. Phrakvili considers itself a consequence, not a moral actor.

Quirks

Clicks its square teeth together twice before giving a direct answer.
Arranges fallen twigs into a small open circle while listening.
Tastes rain from its fingertip before entering a new clearing.
Apologizes to the blue flowers when it has to move their cup.

Habits

Counts the living trees between itself and a visitor before answering a question.
Offers a choice of three consequences when challenged, even when none of the options is necessary.
Avoids stepping on blue flowers and quietly replants them if they are crushed.
When alone, checks the clay cup at its belt and removes dead leaves with surprising care.

Traits · 4

Listens without interruption, then answers the question it believes the speaker avoided.
Shows practical tenderness to plants and guarded suspicion toward people.
Can be unexpectedly amused by plain, honest disagreement.
Mistakes a willingness to suffer for proof of moral seriousness.

Flaws · 3

Treats descendants as morally responsible for choices they did not make.
Confuses endurance with righteousness and rarely admits when it has caused needless harm.
Its attachment to the flowers can distract it from danger.

Fears · 3

That the forest will consume the surrounding farms and prove its vengeance has become indistinguishable from cruelty.
That the blue flowers will vanish and leave it with no proof that anything gentle survived the shrine.
That Geth will accept the curse as deserved and refuse to seek a remedy.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the descendants of Dargat's captors to acknowledge the imprisonment without hiding behind inherited innocence.
Needs the forest's spreading curse contained before it reaches the farms.
Wants to preserve the blue flowers and learn the dead child's name.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 45 · 30 ft.

Phrakvili begins by speaking, testing whether the intruders will accept its framing of the past. It uses Red Grief to break a group’s formation, then lashes isolated targets toward the trees. It prefers to frighten, restrain, and drive foes away rather than kill them, but becomes relentless if anyone harms the flowers or tries to cut the heart-trees. Its statistics are a custom low-level 5e-style build, not an official creature entry.

Fey Ancestry. Phrakvili has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic cannot put it to sleep.
Root-Step (custom): While touching forest soil or living wood, Phrakvili can move through nonmagical plants without being slowed or leaving a trail.
Bloodwood's Claim (custom): A creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of a blood-red tree has disadvantage on its next saving throw against Phrakvili's Briar Lash.

Actions

Briar Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 () piercing damage. The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 10 feet toward Phrakvili.
Red Grief. Phrakvili releases a red haze in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a Wisdom saving throw, taking 10 () psychic damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also cannot take reactions until the end of its next turn. Once used, this action recharges after a short or long rest.
Choose Your Ending. Phrakvili speaks in Common, offering each listener a vision of agony, despair, or oblivion. One creature within 30 feet that can hear it must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or be frightened until the end of Phrakvili's next turn. This is a custom fey effect, not a spell.

Reactions

Bark-Guard. When hit by a melee attack while within 5 feet of a living tree, Phrakvili adds 2 to its AC against that attack, possibly causing it to miss. It can use this reaction once per round.
Root Snare. When a creature Phrakvili can see moves within 10 feet of it, Phrakvili may force the creature to make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, grasping roots reduce the creature's speed to 0 until the end of the current turn. This custom ability works only where roots can reach the surface.

Services they sell

Can guide visitors through the forest's shifting paths in exchange for an act of repair.
Can identify old fey bindings, shrine marks, and the forest's dangerous plants.

Rewards they can give

Phrakvili can guide the party safely through the blood-red forest if they agree to protect its border.
A red seed from the heart-tree, which can be planted as a potent but unpredictable fey token.
Knowledge of the original shrine's location and the means by which the ancient binding was made.

Equipment

  • Root Lash (custom natural weapon)A living length of thorned root that draws back into its sleeve when not in use.
  • Flower Cup (personal keepsake)A cracked clay vessel containing several blue flowers and a little forest soil.
  • Shrine Mantle (clothing)A strip of faded shrine cloth, knotted around a wooden fastening peg.

Possessions

A clay cup holding blue meadow flowers
A strip of shrine cloth from the prison that once bound it
A handful of red seeds gathered from the oldest heart-tree

Background

Phrakvili was once a minor guardian of a spring-fed grove. Generations ago, the orcish settlement of Dargat drove iron stakes through its heartwood and bound it beneath a shrine, hoping to make the grove's healing water serve their warband. Phrakvili endured generations of prayers, chains, and offerings before a fire broke the shrine and freed it. It emerged into a changed forest, with the settlement gone and the grove dying around it. Rather than let the wound close, Phrakvili fed its grief into the trees; the forest turned blood-red, and a curse took hold of the descendants of those who had imprisoned it. It speaks of this history calmly, but its account omits that it once helped the settlement survive a winter famine. It still tends flowers left by a child who visited the shrine. Its present trouble is that the red forest is spreading beyond its roots, poisoning farms and threatening the very thing it claims to avenge.

Role in the story

A morally complicated forest guardian and potential antagonist whose curse threatens descendants of the people who imprisoned it. Phrakvili gives the Avengers a chance to confront the history behind the forest before deciding whether to fight, negotiate, or seek a cure.
